MIB MP3 Alarm Clock
04/01/2005 10:59 AM
Continuing with the USB memory news today is MIB and their
"Wakeup+" alarm clock. The Wakeup+ really isn't the first time we've
seen an alarm clock that supports playback of MP3, but it may be the
first time we've seen it done right. It supports the USB
On-The-Go standard, so you can plug USB memory devices right into the
port found on the reverse of the unit. MIB has also confirmed the
clock to work with the iPod mini and iPod shuffle.

Alarm clock that hides
Alarm clock that hides
03/29/2005 08:54 PMDavid Pescovitz:
Clocky is an alarm clock that hides when you hit its snooze button. It
was developed by Gauri Nanda at the MIT Media Lab. From the project
description:
When the alarm clock
goes off and the snooze button is pressed, Clocky will roll off the
bedside table and wheel away, bumping mindlessly into objects on the
floor until it eventually finds a spot to rest. Minutes later, when
the alarm sounds again, the sleeper must get up out of bed and search
for Clocky. This ensures that the person is fully awake before turning
it off. Small wheels that are concealed by Clocky's shag enable it to
move and reposition itself, and an internal processor helps it find a
new hiding spot every day.
I don't like being told when to wake up but I've come to terms with
the idea that I have to. In designing Clocky, I was in part inspired
by kittens I've had that would bite my toes every morning.

Classic, modern style. Smooth, refined form. Oh, and

jigsaw puzzle to deactivate the alarm. No cord to cut, since
it's battery operated, and "recommended for ages 3 or

like. On closer inspection, that's carpet, although Gauri Nanda

rolls off your nightstand, bounces off your startled dog and finds a
new place to hide once you press the snooze button. Maybe one day,
we'll have an alarm clock that just crawls on your chest and wets
itself. We can dream, can't we?

Hilton
Hotels are rolling out new radio alarm clocks to their rooms, complete
with a line-in jack for plugging in your MP3 player. In addition, the
new units are supposed to be a lot easier to set yourself, and can
wake you up with the sound of one of four pre-set radio stations
instead of the jarring clang of the hotel wake-up call (although, I
sort of like that, especially when the friendly robot calls).
Of course, it'd be cooler if the clock could wake you up with
your music, but that would probably morph into 'iPod only.'

01/05/2005 06:31 AMDavid Pescovitz:
Cambridge physicist Helen Czerski and BMX pro Ben Wallace have
collaboratively designed a new bike trick in honor of the centenary
celebration of
Einstein's most influential scientific publications.
In the stunt, 18-year-old Wallace, a competitor in extreme
sports events around the world, launched off a six-feet high ramp and
spun backwards through 360 degrees while simultaneously folding his
bike underneath him in a move known to BMX devotees as a
‘tabletop’. At one point, onlookers saw Wallace upside
down, travelling at 15mph, with his head 12-feet off the floor.
Czerski, a keen sportswoman and diver herself, said: “I spent a
lot of time looking at the physics behind various stunts, trying to
understand the limits of what is physically possible to determine how
far we could push the parameters with our new creation. I then tested
our ideas using a computer simulation to plot a new
stunt.”
The stunt draws upon a variety of physics theories including the
conservation of angular momentum and Newton's laws of
motion.

Flip-switch day
Flip-switch day
11/16/2003 08:29 PM
Lots of changes today, but ones with (Murphy-willing) very
small impact on the user interface. In fact, unless they don't work,
you shouldn't see any difference at all. Since this is
Scripting News, and not Knitting News, we'll go ahead and say which
switches got flipped.
First, www.scripting.com now resides on the east coast instead
of the west. The new Monster servers, the 3GHz meat-eaters that
climb skyscrapers, are now both managing the content and doing the
serving for everything on scripting.com.
The picture of King Kong to the right will
appear when the new server is visible through DNS to your browser. If
you see a broken image and want to see what the picture looks like
just click on it.
Second, a big change in the way the outliner works. We used to
have to tell it how to format a day of weblog posts using
Rules, a great feature if you want a lot of control over how
things look, but a pain in the butt if every day looks exactly like
every other day, as is always true in my weblog.
Third, this is going to be a product, not one that I plan to
sell (although I may give it to UserLand and they might sell it). It's
a new kind of outliner-based Web CMS, that does weblogs and all the
other stuff you see popping up here on Scripting. I spent much of the
day exploring ideas for how to package, test and then ship this.
Should it be a Manila plug-in? Or
something that's linked to Manila on a sort of peer basis? Or should
it be completely independent of Manila? I want to deliberate on this
decision, because I expect to live with it for a long time.

Evolved antenna designs
Evolved antenna designs
06/28/2004 11:35 AMThis antenna (and may others on the linked page) was evolved by NASA
using a genetic algorithm. While highly effective, its design is
counter-intuitive.
First, there is the potential of needing less power. Antenna ST5-3-10
achieves high gain (2-4dB) across a wider range of elevation angles.
This allows a broader range of angles over which maximum data
throughput can be achieved. Also, less power from the solar array and
batteries may be required.
Second, the evolved antenna does not require a matching network nor a
phasing circuit, removing two steps in design and fabrication of the
antenna. A trivial transmission line may be used for the match on the
flight antenna, but simulation results suggest that one is not
required.
Third, the evolved antenna has more uniform coverage in that it has a
uniform pattern with small ripples in the elevations of greatest
interest (between 40 and 80 degrees). This allows for reliable
performance as elevation angle relative to the ground changes.

radio head who may have revolutionized antenna design:
Rob Vincent couldn't let anything interfere with love,
even interference itself. In 1995, the ham radio buff moved in to his
girlfriend's small Rhode Island house to live happily ever after. But
there was a hitch. Her small piece of property wasn't big enough for
Vincent, his significant other, and the 140-foot antenna he needed to
reach his wireless buddies around the world.
Dedicated to both his future wife and his hobby, Vincent spent nearly
a decade designing the antenna now standing in his backyard. The
40-foot-high pole bests conventional antennas three times taller. This
week, the inventor and his employer, the University of Rhode Island,
are filing a patent on the technology...
"The people saying that I'm a snake oil salesman... will have to order
a great big plate of crow very soon," Vincent says.

Although there's
an old adage, "Never trust a University of Rhode Island press release
when it's talking about a breakthrough in antenna technology," I think
we'll go against the grain and mention this new technique by inventor
Rob Vincent (of the university's Physics Department) that claims to
have produce distributed-load, monopole antennas that will double the
range of walkie-talkies, cell phones, and WiFi networking equipment.
According to testing performed by URI (ah HA!), the antennas are
one-third to one-ninth the size of a full-size counterpart while
retaining 80 to 100 percent efficiency. Vincent developed the antennas
while trapped in the steam tunnels below the university, where he
works in the lab cafeteria (maybe). (Thanks, Dean Halberg!)
