Truckers Early Adopters of Tech

Truckers Early Adopters of Tech 06/01/2004 11:13 PM
Solid Washington Post story on truckers' use of Wi-Fi at truck stop hotspots: A few interesting new tidbits include the excellent observation that truckers are always early adopters of technology that has utility to their industry, like GPS and Wi-Fi, and that TruckStop.net reports 10,000 subscribers since October with just a few hundred locations. That's at least a few hundred grand a month, and doesn't count the drop-in users. What the article doesn't mention because it's too speculative is that if you combine a truckers' need of Internet connectivity for business and pleasure with the growing availability of high-speed cell data service, you could find truckers living the multi-modal connectivity life, pulling over at rest stops to use EDGE or 1xEv-DO, and then pulling into truck stops for the applications that need high bandwidth and/or high upload speeds. A little secret about TruckStop.net: a year's subscription averages less than $17 per month, but Boingo Wireless has a deal to aggregate their locations in the Boingo network, although I don't see locations live in the network yet. Boingo charges $21.95 for unlimited access for 12 months and then $34.95 per month thereafter; no cancellation penalties. A smart trucker with a Windows laptop should soon be able to use TruckStop.net and several thousand other locations. [link via Brian Chin]...

Mozilla-Based Browsers Are Gaining

Mozilla-Based Browsers Are Gaining 07/01/2004 10:49 AM

Are the Browser Wars Back? - How Mozilla's Firefox trumps Internet Explorer: This is a good article from Slate that rings true — Mozilla and Firefox are surging in the market right now. More and more, people are switching.

You've probably been told to dump Internet Explorer for a Mozilla browser before, by the same propeller-head geek who wants you to delete Windows from your hard drive and install Linux. You've ignored him, and good for you. [...]

But six years later, the surviving members of the Mozilla insurgency are staging a comeback. [...] all-conquering Internet Explorer has been stuck in the mud for the past year, as Microsoft stopped delivering new versions.

Joe and I were leaving my building two nights ago, and we overheard a conversation between two lawyers out front. I know both of them, and I can tell you that neither is a shining example of technical aptitude, yet we heard one of them tell the other "...your problem is that you're still using Internet Explorer...you should be using that Mozilla..."

This week I have to head over to my in-laws for the sixth or seventh time this year to cleanse their machine of all the unbelievable crud that IE allows to get in there. This time, they switch to Mozilla or I'm not coming back.

I don't mean to sound elitist and geeky, but if you're still using IE...why? (I am SO going to regret writing that...)

“The growing popularity of Mozilla-based Web browsers appears to be attracting the attention of the malicious hacking community. Between July 1, 2004, and Dec. 31, 2004, the number of documented vulnerabilities affecting the Mozilla browser and The Mozilla Foundation’s Firefox browser was higher than the number of vulnerabilities affecting Microsoft Corp.’s Internet Explorer, according to the latest Internet Security Threat Report from Symantec Corp. released Monday. The report, which provides an update of Internet threat…

DSL Providers Offer Wi-Fi as Lure

DSL Providers Offer Wi-Fi as Lure 07/06/2004 06:17 PM
DSL providers have gained on cable Internet marketshare; Wi-Fi is one lure: The Wall Street Journal reports that the efforts by Verizon, BellSouth, Qwest, and SBC coupled with reduced prices are paying off. More new broadband customers chose DSL over cable in 2004's first quarter. Cable companies are warming to the notion of Wi-Fi for intra-home sharing, however. Cable companies still trot out the "sharing Internet is like stealing cable" for connections shared beyond a home. It's clearly not. The law governing cable theft doesn't cover Internet sharing. It may certainly be a violation of the terms of service, and thus a reason for canceling a cable modem subscriber's account. But I sincerely doubt that a cable firm would win a prosecution under the cable theft laws which govern programming....

Description: Secunia Research has discovered a vulnerability in Mozilla / Mozilla Firefox, which can be exploited by malicious people to spoof the source displayed in the Download Dialog box. The problem is that long sub-domains and paths aren’t displayed correctly, which therefore can be exploited to obfuscate what is being displayed in the source field of the Download Dialog box. The vulnerability has been confirmed in Mozilla 1.7.3 for Linux, Mozilla 1.7.5 for Windows, and…

“A vulnerability has been reported in Mozilla and Mozilla Firefox, allowing malicious websites to spoof the user interface. The problem is that Mozilla and Mozilla Firefox don’t restrict websites from including arbitrary, remote XUL (XML User Interface Language) files. This can be exploited to “hijack” most of the user interface (including tool bars, SSL certificate dialogs, address bar and more), thereby controlling almost anything the user sees….A PoC (Proof of Concept) exploit for Mozilla Firefox…
