T_Stowaway_BT_Open_S.jpg ImageBrighthand's Ed Hardy is now my forsworn enemy. See, Stowaway sent me one of their new folding Bluetooth Keyboards for review, but thanks to the indolent slime slurping shit-for-brains that helm our local FedEx hub, I got to bumble around Queens ("Like Brooklyn, But Norther") trying to track down a counterfactually extant package while Hardy got to fiddle around with his special new dandypants wireless keyboard. Hates him. Hurts him. Then the recreant shit swizzle had the nerve to only sort of like it, calling it "only marginally better" than the infrared version.

Curse your turtleneck, Ed Hardy. Your beard will not save you this time.

11/02/2003 03:15 PM
Brighthand review of the new iPAQ h4155 Pocket PC from Hewlett Packard. The h4155 (which has a 400MHz processor, 64MB of RAM, and both Bluetooth and WiFi built-in) has largely been overshadowed by some of the other handhelds that have come out recently, like Palm's Tungsten T3 and Dell's Axim X3i, but if Brighthand's enthusiasm is any indication, this one is not worth overlooking:They said it couldn't be done. That creating a pocketable, multimedia-capable handheld with a magnificent color screen, fast processor and, heaven forbid, two forms of wireless was an impossibility -- a contradiction of terms, so to speak. Well, it seems that no one informed HP of this apparent conundrum. Its new iPAQ h4155 Pocket PC does just that, and it may well be the best looking device on the market to boot.By the way (and we know it's pointlessly confusing), but the h4155 is also known as...

archos_av420.jpg imagePCMag checks in with a mostly positive review of the Archos AV420 Pocket Video Recorder, marred only by the public acknowledgement that the only DVD they could find in John Dvorak's office was a well-worn copy of Top Gun. I mean, they don't say that, exactly, but I think we can all safely infer from the picture that most of his columns are written with the Ride Into The Danger Zone scene playing over and over in the background.

It explains so much, really.

Reviews for Make

Reviews for Make 02/01/2005 08:38 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: There's still time to contribute a review to the second issue of MAKE, a technology project magazine I'm editing.

Is there some gadget, tool, web site, newsletter, instructional video, book, magazine, CD-ROM, or instrument you already own and love? Then write about it for MAKE. We'll pay you if we run it.

Reviews should be approximately 100-300 words, and be written in the first person. Think more "recommendation" and "experience" when you write these than "review." We want to hear about your involvement with it.

The old Wired guidelines for reviews went like this: “Write your review. Then write us a letter explaining why we should devote space to your item. Throw away your review and send us the letter.” That's the way to do it.

Send your reviews to markf@oreilly.com

Matrix reviews

Matrix reviews 11/05/2003 02:29 PM

STLtoday: "The Matrix Revolutions" is awful. It's not merely hapless or disappointing - it's a total catastrophe, an apocalyptic waste of money and talent that obliterates its very purpose, which was to resolve the cosmological questions that were posed by that misbegotten middle child, "The Matrix Reloaded."

Daily Trojan: "by the time the long awaited denouement is delivered, which reveals the power behind the Machine World, the "Deus Ex Machina," most viewers will already be looking at their watches."

matrix.jpg

Tri-City Herald: "If this is what big-budget freedom does to filmmakers, they should be kept in chains. Louder, longer, more expensive and dumber than its predecessors, "Revolutions" is a mediocrity that will provide escapism only to those who head for the theater exits."

CBS News: "Revolutions" eats all of the goodwill built up by "The Matrix," and then some. It isn't just bad moviemaking -- it's a bizarrely self-destructive film."

BBC NEWS: "No-one really expects sequels to be better than the original, but Matrix Revolutions is a crushing disappointment in almost every way."

More reviews.

Now that your expectations have been sufficiently lowered, feel free to go see it. I certainly will.

Not So Anonymous Reviews

Not So Anonymous Reviews 02/14/2004 11:51 PM

Amazon Glitch Unmasks War of Reviewers: Amazon accidentally posted the real names of anonymous book reviewers on their site, and in the process, revealed that the whole user-submitted review process is garbage.

But even with reviewer privacy restored, many people say Amazon's pages have turned into what one writer called "a rhetorical war," where friends and family members are regularly corralled to write glowing reviews and each negative one is scrutinized for the digital fingerprints of known enemies.

One well-known writer admitted privately — and gleefully — to anonymously criticizing a more prominent novelist who he felt had unfairly reaped critical praise for years. She regularly posts responses, or at least he thinks it is her, but the elegant rebuttals of his reviews are also written from behind a pseudonym.

Reviews in RSS feeds

Reviews in RSS feeds 11/03/2003 11:12 AM
The RVW specification is a module extension to the RSS 2.0 syndication format. RVW is intended to allow machine-readable reviews to be integrated into an RSS feed, thus allowing reviews to be automatically compiled from distributed sources.&194;&160; In other words,&194;&160;you can write book, restaurant, movie, product, etc.&194;&160;reviews inside your own&194;&160;website, while allowing them to be used by Amazon or other review aggregators.

Aww, yeah. Bring on the microcontent. Yay, hooray! This is an XML namespace-based extension to RSS 2.0, and for even more flavor, it uses the work of other pre-existing specs, such as ENT, FOAF, and Dublin Core. This wouldn't be hard at all to slip into an RSS 1.0 feed and an RDF database as well.

The new Doctor Who reviews

The new Doctor Who reviews 04/14/2005 01:59 PM
The new Doctor Who series has been airing on BBC Television for three weeks now. And it is "good TV" Most all of the reviews are startlingly positive, far more than I've seen for a television series in a long, long time. What is most striking is that many of the commentaries about the "New Who" state that it is just plain ole' good television that combines something intelligent, something scary, something mysterious and something balls-out fun. In our world of reality television, what other series would you classify as being "good tv"? What makes for "good TV"? (Link goes to a fan site that has re-printed and linked to numerous reviews)

Reviews of pens

Reviews of pens 05/20/2004 05:43 PM
pen-rotringIllustrator Danny Gregory has reviewed a bunch of pens, accompanied by his drawings of the pens.
"Rotring Rapidoliner: I am really in love with this pen these days and I never would of thunk it. I first tried Rapidographs when I was a teenager but they always clogged and leaked and were a pain to fill. I was forever dismantling the nibs and washing them in the sink and finding ink blots on my shirts. This pen is perfect. My nib is the finest they make and the pen just won’t clog or skip. The guts are disposable, for $4 you get a fresh new nib and supply of Indian ink. I have been drawing with this pen every day for two months and am still on my original cartridge. The pen’s feeling is ultra smooth, a little creamy and a little brittle, like icing on a cupcake. The best $10 I ever spent."
