Yahoo Acquires Musicmatch Inc.
09/14/2004 10:04 PMInternet heavyweight Yahoo has just announced that it will be
acquiring Musicmatch Inc. for $160 million in cash. Set to close in Q4
of this year, the deal will see Musicmatch Inc. become a direct
subsidiary of the expanding California based company.
Plans include integrating Musicmatch' existing on-line radio network
and music store into the popular "Yahoo Launch" service.
Yahoo CEO Dennis Mudd commented that "...combining assets with
Launch, we believe that Musicmatch will have an even stronger position
to take advantage of the rapidly growing digital music segment."
Musicmatch currently sells around 1.5 million digital songs per month
through its online music portal. Yahoo will undoubtedly make a push to
bring that number up, trying to lure users away from competing portals
like iTunes and Rhapsody.

Yahoo: Please fix MusicMatch!
09/15/2004 01:24 PMNow that
Yahoo has
acquired MusicMatch, maybe they can fix the software.
I am a long-term user, I've paid several times for the product over
the years, its basic interface works for me better than iTunes, and
I'm used to it, I don't want to change. But: In trying to turn
a good music client into a boffo music store, MusicMatch has
repeatedly broken its software. Most recently, the thing crashes
whenever I try to copy a CD to my hard drive. This same bug existed
for months last winter, then MusicMatch finally fixed it -- now it has
reappeared in the latest update. (The "volume leveling" feature, which
would be highly useful if it worked, has also always crashed.)
Frankly, MusicMatch, I don't care about your store. I just want
your software, once the best of its kind, to work.

09/14/2004 12:54 PMYahoo's could not do it on their own so they had to buy one of my
most favored music vendors. I have always been a big fan of Musicmatch
and now that Yahoo has just bought them out I am sure they will ruin
it. I stopped using Yahoo and brands they own when they went to a pay
model on listing your site with them. I wonder if my Lifetime upgrade
of Musicmatch will be honored. [News.co

Yahoo Matches With MusicMatch
Yahoo Matches With MusicMatch
09/14/2004 12:29 PMYahoo continues its buying streak, with the latest deal showing that
Terry Semel hasn't forgotten his entertainment roots. The company is
shelling out $160 million for MusicMatch, a popular player in the
digital music space that hasn't done quite as well lately. For a
while, MusicMatch was one of the most popular client applications on
Windows machines for managing MP3 collections. More recently they
offered a subscription service that won strong reviews. A few years
ago, MusicMatch provided the only client side app on Windows machines
that would work with the iPod, but once iTunes for Windows was
written, Apple
shoved
MusicMatch aside, making them something of a has-been in the
space. The deal with Yahoo is less about their client software than
the number of subscribers they bring -- which basically doubles the
number of subscribers to Yahoo's Launch music subscription service.
Of course, given some of Yahoo's track record with acquisitions
lately, they'll simply swallow this one up, rather than using it as a
way to really jump ahead of the competition with a more advanced
service.
