Now Schools Need To Block Advergaming?

Now Schools Need To Block Advergaming? 09/15/2004 09:50 PM

There are already battles over how much schools need to do to block access to porn and other inappropriate sites from students, and now they are being told to worry about "advergaming" as well. This, of course, is at the same time as corporations are increasingly sneaking into schools in other ways, from McDonald's supplying lunch food to the MPAA teachin g lessons about copyright. Instead of worrying how to "block" such things, couldn't it be useful as a lesson? Advertising is clearly a part of our lives, every day. There's no way to avoid it. Why not start teaching kids at a young age how advertising works, and teaching them how to have a more critical mind about what they see and read. Rather than banning it, let it come in, while teaching the students how to deal with it. Won't that do a better job preparing them for adulthood?

Offline Brands Turning to "Advergaming": You know all those little Flash-based games we play that advertise something or other? Like, the Orbitz ad games, for instance? They have an name: advergaming.

Already, offline brands including Jack Daniels, Quaker Mills and Nabisco have all experimented with online, brand-integrated games, and several more advertisers are preparing to do the same in the near future &mdasg; including Paramount Pictures and Nike.

There are companies that special ize in making these little timewasters. There's even a book on it. Go figure.

Do you block banner ads? 09/18/2004 05:21 PM
We here at MacMerc.com have a love/hate relationship with banner advertisements. On the one hand they are annoying--especially those "Click the monkey and win a prize" ones. But on the other hand, they help us pay our hosting fees.

Quite a while ago, as a public service to our readers, we posted an article on ad blocking and now that sufficient time has passed and our Google AdSense revenues are dwindling, we thought it might be the appropriate time to see if some method of ad blocking as become a standard part of your internet experience.

Teachers will also find lesson plans, worksheets and datasets that can be used in their classrooms. The lesson ideas are organized by topics and involve using statistics to answer questions such as, "Do girls pull their weight more than boys at home?" and "Are you at risk from the sun?" Technology in Schools

Technology in Schools 12/03/2002 11:46 AM

It's quite sad how technology has turned out in our school district. Not so much that our school doesn't have technology, or that the people in charge of it aren't smart. It's sad that our school is raised on the fact that Windows PC's are superior to Macs, or any other operating system, and that technology only gets as good as we have it. Its a shame that so many people are so close minded. I think our school could benefit hugely by switching to Macs, but that will never happen with the current administrative staff. But I suppose this is my opinion. Although I've used every platform you can think of, my opinion doesn't count, nor does my parents, or anyone else's in our city. A few select people decide which platform I have to deal with.

Check out this site for more info on why schools should have Macs instead of Wintel machines.

Senator Tries to Block GMail

Senator Tries to Block GMail 04/23/2004 09:33 AM

Legislator seeks to block Gmail: I don't agree with the senator's logic here. Like I've said before, GMail is essentially a big bribe. In exchange for 1GB of storage, you give up some privacy. So long as people understand that going in, where's the harm? You won't catch me doing it, but other people are willing to live with the creepiness for that much space. I say good for them.

Blasting Gmail as a horrific intrusion into Internet users' privacy, a California state senator has introduced legislation to block Google's free e-mail service.

State Sen. Liz Figueroa, a Democrat from the Bay Area city of Fremont, said Thursday that it should be illegal for a company to scan the text of its customers' e-mail correspondence and display relevant advertising--even if customers explicitly agree to the practice in exchange for a gigabyte of storage.

Secure UI: 9-Block Phishmarks

Secure UI: 9-Block Phishmarks 05/05/2004 02:36 AM

When I originally came up with the idea of phishmarking, I was thinking of using fractal patterns.  Unfortunately, fractual patterns are rarely simple symmetrical designs so they are more difficult to remember.  So while I was looking for a different approach, I remembered Jared Tarbell's 9-Block Pattern Generator at Levitated.net which basically does what quilt makers have been doing for ages but with simple shapes that can be used to build a shape that is easy to recognize even at small size.

It uses following 16 shapes, rotations, colors, inversion, and some rule for symmetry to generate astonishing number of designs.

Below is my implementation of 9-block phishmarks being used in browser toolbars.  Note that phishmarks are anti-aliased because the display area on the toolbar was too small.  Cool, eh?

Pretty and Safe!

BTW, Jared told me that 9-block pattern generation algorithm can be used without a license although his Flash code is under GPL.  Jared also has other interesting graphics generators that could be used for phishmarking although I am not sure about licensing.  For example, Bone Piles and Combinat orial Critters are pretty interesting although they will require more real estate and more complex coloring schemes.

9-block quilts are very interesting although not enough to make me want to take up the sewing needle.  Heh.  Anyway, if you want to find out more, here are some links to get you staretd:

Update:

To be more precise about how many unique patterns can be generated, above implementation uses 17 bits for the pattern (3 bits for the middle shape and 7 bits each for corner and side shapes) plus foreground and background colors.  Taking limits of human vision and color restrictions, I would say this implementation of 9-block phishmarks can generate around a billion easily recognizable unique patterns.  That's enough, I think, against phishing.

If not, adding a few more shapes will be enough to assign a unique design for every single person on earth.  Hmm.  Wouldn't it be interesting to assign one to each last names so they can be used as 'house' symbols?
