Meta-tags, or, the Dublin Meta Core
Meta-tags, or, the Dublin Meta Core03/17/2005 03:00 AM As we sort through tags, it'd often be useful to know who created a
particular tag. And when. And in which application. And probably other
stuff also. While some apps remember who created which tag (e.g.,
Flickr), as we begin to aggregate tags, we could use a standard way to
express this tagging metadata...a Dublin Core not for objects but for
tags attached to objects. If this were to happen, it's very likely to
come from the apps that benefit from having standardized tag metadata.
The most obvious suspects are the search engines. (Hmm. I may be
re-having Mary Hodder's...

description tells Carpenter what the object is. Shown here,

"My body is framed by one long smooth line,
An axis of symmetry down my spine,
My stalk is long, with a quick swell and bend,
And four small birth marks cut into the end.
My body is smooth like a fresh-laid egg,
I look like an octopus with one leg.
My surface was bright like the sun at noon,
Now marked and scarred like the face of the
moon."

From keywords, art
From keywords, art06/18/2004 10:59 AM NYT story on an interactive art installation that toys with the
surreal, free-association results of Internet keyword searches. David
Ayman Shamma of Northwestern University, and Kristian J. Hammond of
Northwestern University have created "Imagination Environment,"
currently on display in Chicago.
[The exhibit] starts with
a live television news broadcast that is displayed at the center of a
wall-mounted array of nine computer monitors. A software program scans
the broadcast's closed-caption stream and selects keywords that prompt
Internet searches for images. Seconds after the live audio is heard,
the news broadcast is surrounded by pertinent photographs and
illustrations on adjacent screens, as well as some images completely
unrelated.
"The words tend to be linked to a strange combination of images that
are on point and strikingly bizarre," Professor Hammond said.
For instance, during a recent televised briefing by Defense Secretary
Donald H. Rumsfeld, a reference to troops was as likely to retrieve a
photograph of Girl Scouts as one of soldiers. But a mention of the
secretary's title only generated a cartoon drawing of an
administrative assistant.
Well, there's been a lot going on over at Technorati, and I've been so
busy that blogging has been pretty light. I hope that I can blog more
often as the summer continues.
Anyway, here's some fun news that I'm happy to report: Technorati
has taken its first steps towards the business models that we've
chosen: We've rolled out keyword search advertising on the website.
You'll notice the "Sponsored Links" box on the right hand side of the
results page on many terms that you do searches upon. This is done through a
partnership we have with findwhat.com, and quite frankly,
it is just a first step. There's a lot of improvements and changes
that we want to make, and this is definitely a "crawl-before-you-walk"
kind of opportunity, but it is a first step. For example, I want to
have a system that makes it easier to do targeting (blog-based? topic
based? authority-based?) and get better reporting. We're also really
interested in your feedback - leave a comment or a link, or drop us a
line at feedback@technorati.com. We are also working on implementing a
lot of the great feedback we got at the developer's forum last month.

Designed to be a quick first line of defense for solving OSX related

large groups of workstations in mind, enabling them to perform a
specific group of maintenance tasks quickly within a few clicks,
rather than endlessly typing shell script commands in the Terminal
app.
The latest version of Yasu optimizes internal performance and security
as well as refining the user interface. It is recommended that current
users update to the latest version which is available for
download.

Meru Updates Optimization Capabilities07/13/2004 12:01 PM Meru repackaged its software to allow users to easily configure their
networks for a variety of situations: The software allows IT managers
to select different configurations based on the type of use of the
network, which consists of access points, a controller, and embedded
software. "If you want to deploy voice, then you press optimize for
voice so the controller will determine the best way for devices to
connect and send packets and handoff is seamless," said Sarah Kim,
senior marketing manager for Meru. "It's all the pieces of our
technology that already existed but it's packaged in a way that the IT
manager doesn't have to think about which set of parameters to turn on
to get the best setting." Users can also choose to configure their
networks for the best coverage and can opt for different
configurations based on separate VLANs. Kim says that Meru's approach
to network optimization is unique. WLAN switch providers tend to rely
on power adjustment to optimize network performance, adjusting each
access point's power output to achieve the best coverage. But Meru
networks, which operate on a single channel, optimize on a per packet
basis....
