Internet Groceries Continue to Expand
(AP)

AP - After the spectacular crashes of big-name Internet grocers in the late 1990s, the dream of a grand new wave of online food stores appeared to fizzle. But with intentionally meager fanfare, grocers have made Internet shopping available to tens of millions of consumers nationwide, and upcoming expansions will expand it to millions more.

Flaky Internet Access at Hotels -> Tech
Winter Will Continue

Flaky Internet Access at Hotels -> Tech
Winter Will Continue
07/23/2004 06:14 PM

I'm currently at the Loews Le Concorde hotel in Quebec City, a 424-room business hotel recommended by some guys at the airport.  Nearly every aspect of the hotel operation reflects enormous management attention to detail.  Yet when it comes to Internet access they've outsourced it to a company called DataValet, "a trademark of TravelNet Technologies."  These guys try to hit you up for $20/day for a 100Kbps link but when I tried to connect their authentication server was dead.  So I had to call the 800-number to talk to a clueless tech support guy.  After about 30 minutes of flailing about I was finally able to connect.  Curious to see how the management, which would not tolerate a burned-out light bulb or a rubbed-off number on an elevator button, was able to tolerate this kind of incompetence, I called the manager.  Although a very nice and competent executive, she was undisturbed by the fact that it was so painful to connect to the Internet at her hotel.  She had even stayed at Hilton Garden Inns where Internet is free and therefore reliable (you just plug in and because they don't try to charge anyone they can use $50 routers; it is also about 15X the speed of "DataValet").  But as far as she was concerned it was something that they'd outsourced to a contractor and if it wasn't working it wouldn't reflect badly on her management.

I would submit that Internet is the only thing that she would have tolerated sucking in her hotel.  If she'd outsourced room service and the contractor told customers to call tech support and then walk down to the McDonald's next door, she would change contractors.  If the telephones in the rooms were flaky she would put in new lines, instruments, and switches.

Just as Web sites are an area where companies feel that they can lag leagues behind their competitors (who even bothers to try to do as good as job as Google?), Internet access seems to be one where an enterprise will cheerfully tolerate being 60X worse that its competition in terms of time to connect and then 15X worse in terms of bandwidth.  I infer from this experience that tech companies are in for another few very bad years in which customers won't want to pay attention to or invest in improved computer hardware and software.

The leading two proposals for ultrawideband within the IEEE 802.15.3a task group are still far apart: International spectrum issues might render the IEEE outcome problematic for use outside the US, while both camps of UWB standards could commercially develop their respective approaches irrespective of the IEEE's standard....

Voda fone in Japan Introduces Sharp's Two Megapixel Camera Phone

"From picturephoning.com I learned about Japan Wireless Watch reporting that Vodafone in Japan has introduced a two megapixel camera phone from Sharp. The Sharp V601SH (see below) has some nice features....

The V601SH includes such features as a Secure Digital card slot, a 20x zoom (I'm not a fan of digital zooms), automatic flash, the ability to bracket exposures (a very nice feature), the ability to create a collage by automatically overlapping a maximum of five photos, rapid fire shooting of up to 25 photos and the ability to shoot MPEG videos at 320 x 240 at 15 frames per second....

But the most difficult problem is not increasing the resolution but, rather, offering cellular data upload speeds that are fast enough to accommodate large graphics files and pricing the airtime/service at a reasonable rate. Data rates and pricing are not minor problems. A one megapixel photo is three times the resolution of a 640 x 480 VGA photo.

United States cellular networks will have a tough enough time supporting one megapixel uploads." [Reiter's Camera Phone Report]

Dang, and I was jealous of the one megapixel cameraphones! So now I need more portable storage (which I will shortly begin measuring in terabytes), more electrical power (over wireless would be great, although I'm sure our brains would be fried by the radiation), and more bandwidth. All for a cheap price.  ;-)

Consumer Frustration

"Maybe it's just me, but I am frustrated by movies on DVD. It seems that the makers of the DVDs have a lot more control over my viewing experience than I do. Lately when I insert a DVD and attempt to play it I am directed to coming attractions. In some cases I can't even fast forward through them, and must skip chapters instead. When I hit the Menu button I am forced to endure a sequence from the movie before the actual menu appears.

DVDs represent an additional revenue stream for movie companies. I have purchased the DVD. When does the movie company believe that they should control my viewing experience? Is it strange of me to expect that when I give the player a command, it should do it, as opposed to letting someone else dictate what I can do?...

Perhaps the movie companies might give a thought as to what the consumer actually wants." [larry borsato]

Case Against Diebold To Continue...
Hopefully
12/02/2003 09:51 AM
While Diebold quietly backed down from their legal threats against anyone hosting their internal documents, showing that they knew their e-voting machines were not secure, one of the groups suing them says they're going to pus h forward with the lawsuit to get a decision saying that such whistleblowing (and especially just linking to others hosting such documents) is not a violation of copyright law. Hopefully the courts will hear the case. Unfortunately, recent history suggests that now that Diebold has withdrawn their lawsuits, the court may say the matter is closed - meaning that companies like Diebold can continue to improperly use the DMCA to threaten anyone blowing the whistle, unless those people can generate enough bad publicity to force the company to back down.
