In this edition of Science.Ars, Fred Locklear provides an update on NASA goings-on. Sean O'Keefe is stepping down as Administrator of NASA. How will this affect the space program?

Additionally, Science.Ars looks at the effects of laptop use on male fertility. A recent study made headlines by claiming that frequent laptop use in the lap could lead to lowered fertility.

While the laptops did cause a rise in scrotal temperature, it is not know how much this affects short term/long term sperm quality and fertility and researchers plan to measure these effects in future studies. For laptop users with worries about fertility problems... I wonder if there would be market for liquid-cooled briefs?

All that and more in this week's Science.Ars.

Pria Element: Male Home Fertility Test

Pria Element: Male Home Fertility Test 08/20/2004 12:50 PM

pria_OP_Image.jpg imagePria Diagnostics has developed the Element, the world's smartest sperm cup. Designed as a home fertility test for men, the $40 kit can tell with 95 percent accuracy whether or not your little sailors are fit for creating life. Currently, lab testing costs around $350 and many times isn't covered by health insurance. For just a fraction of the price, the Element brings "good enough" male fertility testing into the home - exactly the place skittish and insecure men might want to use it.

The kit uses fluorescent chemicals that mind to sperm when the cup is shaken. As the little troopers start glowing, an optical chip called "MEMS" uses an LED to determine the concentration and motility of the sample.

The Element is currently undergoing FDA approval.

White Male Solution

White Male Solution 03/17/2005 03:58 AM

If white male dominated blogosphere is really bad, then here is a simple solution: Let us all be white males.

After all, blogosphere is a virtual world so anyone can pretend to be a white male.  You don't have to say you are a white male because, if you don't put up your picture and use a masculine alias instead of your real name, your readers will assume you are a white male.

Since my picture is already out, let me just say that I am a white male as well, a descendent of a Jewish family that wandered a little too far east.  As to my facial features, it was the water. ;-)

This topic annoys the heck out of me.  Oy.

Pale Male and the City

Pale Male and the City 12/19/2004 03:21 PM
I missed a great essay yesterday from MUG entitled, Why Pale Male Matters. (For those who aren't aware, Pale Male (and his mate Lola) are red-tailed hawks that have lived for 11 years in a nest they built on the cornice of a Fifth Avenue co-op overlooking Central Park. A week ago, the co-op board removed the nest, leaving the hawks homeless. Protesters have been at the scene ever since, as the hawks float overhead.) Editor Charlie Suisman writes: 'What sort of city shall we be?' isn't a question that most New Yorkers take time to answer in their course of their daily lives. It's a question that gets asked and answered at moments of disruption (blackout? block party!) and deeply, urgently in moments of tragedy... [Y]ou truly become a New Yorker when the city seems more to you than your workplace and a collection of shops and restaurants, when you start caring about the city itself, beyond your daily route, outside of your neighborhood, about the city we were and the city we might become. You know you're a New Yorker when you know what kind of city we are... 927 Fifth Avenue board president Richard Cohen and his wife, Paula Zahn failed to understand the public, communal, and civic space that is the sine qua non of New York. They failed to understand that they, like all the rest of us, are guardians of this city first and foremost. And when something belongs to the city, as Pale Male and family so manifestly do, and they are treated so cavalierly, as Cohen and Zahn so manifestly did, the arrogance becomes untenable. And untenable arrogance has a way of meeting comeuppance in this city. The outpouring of support for Pale Male has been incredible and it's moments like these (and essays like Suisman's) that remind and clarify for me why I love New York. And the good news? Today's New York Times reports, Co-op to Help Hawks Rebuild, but the Street Is Still Restless. Yay! Also, a humorous examination of the price of Pale Male's perch at Curbed.

The Shame of Adult Male Virginity

The Shame of Adult Male Virginity 08/23/2004 04:39 AM
My feeling is that somewhere between the ages of 18 and 22-25 society starts expecting men to not be virgins. Well, maybe "expecting" is not the right word, but that's the age range were I started feeling shame about being a virgin. There are many advantages to being a virgin: you know you're not diseased, you know you're not a daddy and you don't have a woman who has reached deep into your inner feelings and can manipulate you with that leverage. A quick side note about diseases: besides the scary lifelong and life-threatening sexually transmitted diseases it is estimated that as many as 50% of sexually active singles have Genital Warts, for which there is no cure. They are extremely easy to transfer between partners and can be a precursor to penile, cervical and rectal cancer.
