How Linux Could Trump Unix

How Linux Could Trump Unix 03/20/2003 01:05 PM
The open source Linux OS has carved out a solid niche in the enterprise and is still gathering steam. In fact, if Unix vendors' recent moves are any indication, Linux' momentum has them worried. Can Linux dethrone Unix and become the server operating system of choice?

Unix and Linux

SCO has recently made two accusations: (1) IBM has contributed IBM employees' code to Linux in violation of certain SCO/IBM contracts, and (2) some proprietary Unix code has somehow been illegally contributed to Linux. I'm not qualified to comment on whether or not IBM owns the code IBM wrote--though on behalf of software authors everywhere, I hope IBM does. However, I've written a tool which will allow SCO to find any code shared between Linux and Unix in about 15 minutes. What SCO does with this tool is up to them.

SCO vs. Linux: Novell argues AT&T
retains Unix rights
02/19/2004 05:49 AM
When Novell jumped into the SCO vs. Linux fight, most of us weren't aware that the networking company was already deep in negotiations to buy SuSE Linux. While this might make its actions more self-serving, most Linux enthusiasts will overlook it as Messmann & Co., being willing to lead the fight to protect the open source operating system from the attacks of SCO's Darl MacBride and his cronies. I mention this, because there were a couple of developments last week.
