Shirky: Wikipedia's "anti-elitism" is a
feature, not a bug
01/04/2005 02:40 AMCory Doctorow:
Kuro5hin published an
article
by a Wikipedia co-founder, in which he slams Wikipedia for its
"anti-elitism" and calls on the organization to mend its ways in order
to earn the confidence of academics, librarians and other learned
types. I read it when it was first published and it seemed wrong to
me, but I couldn't put my finger on it.
Now Clay Shirky -- himself an academic -- has written a wonderful and
comprehensive rebuttal of the piece, explaining why complaints of
"anti-elitism" are misplaced.
Of course librarians, teachers, and academics don't like the
Wikipedia. It works without privelege, which is inimical to the way
those professions operate.
This is not some easily fixed cosmetic flaw, it is the Wikipedia's
driving force. You can see the reactionary core of the academy playing
out in the horror around Google digitizing books held at Harvard and
the Library of Congress -- the NY Times published a number of letters
by people insisting that real scholarship would still only be possible
when done in real libraries. The physical book, the hushed tones, the
monastic dedication, and (unspoken) the barriers to use, these are all
essential characteristics of the academy today.
It's not that it doesn't matter what academics think of the Wikipedia
-- it would obviously be better to have as many smart people using it
as possible. The problem is that the only thing that would make the
academics happy would be to shoehorn it into the kind of filter, then
publish model that is broken, and would make the Wikipedia broken as
well.

Brief Abstract of Wikipedia's
Mesothelioma Cancer page
06/26/2005 02:07 AMMesothelioma is an uncommon form of cancer, usually associated with
previous exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant (cancerous)
cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most
of the body's internal organs. Its most common site is the pleura
(outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity), but it may also occur in
the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity) or the pericardium
(a sac that surrounds the heart).
Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they
inhaled asbestos particles, or have been exposed to asbestos dust and
fibre in other ways, such as by washing the clothes of a family member
who worked with asbestos, or by home renovation using asbestos cement
products.
In the United States, the average mesothelioma-related settlement was
$1 million; for cases that go to trial awards averaged $6 million,
according to a study by the RAND Corporation. Only a small fraction of
the thousands of asbestos-related lawsuits in the United States every
year are related to mesothelioma. In 2004, a bill in the United States
Senate aimed a asbestos litigation reform failed to reach a floor
vote. In January of 2005, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen
Specter announced he would again try to pass an asbestos litigation
reform bill.
A separate bill introduced on March 17, 2005, the Fairness in Asbestos
Injury Resolution Act of 2005 (FAIR act of 2005), seeks to ensure a
set amount of compensation dependent on the symptoms of the victim.
The range is from Medical Monitoring for victims with Asbestosis or
Pleural Disease to $35,000 for victims with Mixed Disease With
Impairment all the way to over $1,000,000 for Mesothelioma victims and
nonsmoking Lung Cancer victims

Emergent church
08/05/2004 02:32 PM AKMA successfully complicates the notion of the "emergent Church."
Snippet: Any singular model of liturgical normativity came into
prominence by way of a long path of emergence — so picking on emergent
church for its buffet liturgical practice occludes the cafeteria past
that lies behind the watershed liturgical models. Fascinating. One of
the things I like about Judaism (speaking as a non-observant Jew) is
the way an original text grounds it, interpretation frees it to
respond to modern and cultural differences, and a tradition of
discourse guides how interpretation addresses the original text....

Emergent bl0gging from Iran
02/11/2004 12:15 PM
Yesterday, Jeff Jarvis
introduced us to the Iranian blogger, Pedram Moallemian. Pedram blogs
at Iranian.net. He is one of the
outspoken Iranians who blogs in English and help us understand what's
going on on the incredible number of Persian blogs. He explain that
the Persian blogs can be traced to the short explanation written by
Hoder at Hoder.com explaining how
to use Blogger in Persian. There
are now over 100,000 Persian blogs. Most of the blogs are about
politics and sex as well as other things like poetry. The suppression
of free speech in Iran is one of the explanations for the number of
Persian blogs, but the notion that one short page of Persian
documentation for Blogger starting this incredible trend is also very
important. Many countries and languages probably just need a small
seed to create an emergent cascade of blogging adoption.
Jeff
writes about an arrested Iranian blogger who was recently freed.
Great post with links to other interesting posts about Iranian
blogging.

08/27/2004 01:47 PMCongrats to Roland and Boris and.....
They've just launched Bryght -
a Drupal hosting service. I hung out with these guys a bit when I was
in Vancouver and they're certainly a compelling reason for moving
there.
Vancouver is hot.
Here's Roland's post....
Our latest venture is Bryght, a hosted Drupal
service, "the Salesforce.com of community content". I am working with
Boris, Richard, Adrian and James on this
one. Yes, we are all Bryght
guys :-) !
We have taken Drupal and combined it with web hosting and email to
give you a one stop shop for your community content. No IT required,
no muss, no fuss! Check out The lights are on at
Bryght for more background on how this started. And if you know
of an individual, organization or company that could use a Bryght
site, please contact us.
Whither StreamLine you might ask?
StreamLine continues and it will continue to resell Blogware blogs because we
still believe that Blogware is the best individual blogging
platform.
