MacCentral - Wednesday, April 28th marks the one-year anniversary of Apple's iTunes Music Store. The company has announced that since the iTunes Music Store opened, it's sold more than 70 million songs -- well short of the 100 million song target that Apple CEO Steve Jobs mentioned last October, but still exceeding Apple's "wildest expectations," according to Jobs.

MacCentral - Thomas William Slattery has filed a class action suit against Apple Computer Inc. in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleging Apple is guilt of violating federal antitrust laws and California's unfair competition law by requiring users who buy music from the iTunes Music Store to use an iPod if they plan to take their music on the road with them. Slattery's suit cuts to the heart of an ongoing issue related to Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology present in commercial downloaded music.

MacCentral - Apple is getting ready to mark the sale of the 100 millionth song from its iTunes Music Store, and the company is marking the occasion with 50 iPod giveaways and a giveaway package that includes a PowerBook, iPod and a 10,000 song gift certificate. The giveaway will be open to iTunes Music Store users in the US, UK, France and Germany. The company also announced that it's moved 1.5 million songs since its European iTunes Music Stores opened two weeks ago.

CEO Steve Jobs on Monday aimed to further solidify his company's hold on the digital music market with the release of AirPort Express, a tiny mobile 802.11g-based wireless networking base station available in July for US$129 that comes equipped with a combination analog and digital audio connector. The announcement came at the "D: All Things Digital" conference in San Diego. AirPort Express will act as a portable 802.11g base station for traveling, but when used at home, will also connect consumers' home stereos with their iTunes Music Library.

Looking to capitalize on the digital music player's sales success over the holidays, auto electronics makers are rushing to develop plug-in adapters that let drivers pick tunes from their iPods using the controls of their car stereos.

It's a market that can't be ignored: Some retailers sold out of Apple Computer's iPod during the holiday shopping blitz. Analysts estimated Apple sold more than 4 million iPods during the holiday rush; that could push the number of iPod users to 10 million.

RealNetworks Inc. on Monday introduced Harmony technology, which it says is the first digital rights management (DRM) translation service to allow users who buy music from the RealPlayer Music Store to play the music on other personal music devices, including the iPod.
