I just received word that I have been admitted into the
International Business Strategy Doctor of Business Administration
(DBA) program at the Hitotsubashi University
Graduate School of International Corporate Strategy. I was talking
to them last year about possibly applying, since the Ministry of
Education recently changed the rules so people could apply for a
doctorate program without a masters degree. Unfortunately, I don't
even have an undergraduate degree so it was tough nuggies for me. They
changed the rules this year and let me apply again and I got in. I
guess this makes me the least educated student to ever be admitted.
hmm...
Anyway, the real reason I'm doing this isn't the degree, although
that's nice. It's a very cool program where I will be able to use the
resources of the university including research and the professors. My
only deliverable is a book on the sharing economy. I don't have to take
any classes and the topic really fits right in with Creative Commons, blogging
and everything else I'm doing. I'm a big fan of many of the professors
at the school and I am really psyched to be able to exploit them
officially now. ;-)

A pair of articles from Reuters and USA Today try
to extrapolate the buying habits of students returning to college,
which would be sort of interesting if there were some hard numbers,
but they're mostly a "Talk to Analysts, See What They Like," sort of
thing. Still, it's good to hear that Averatec's C3500 Tablet PC is
selling well; I haven't used one, but the price is right, for sure.
Other stalwarts like Palms and Sidekicks and iPods aren't that
surprising, but the USA Today article, claiming the success of the
iPod this year is causing more students to purchase Apple laptops
(specifically iBooks) is curious. I'm a little sketched, honestly, but
I'm looking forward to the numbers later this year. Even Apple
themselves has said they don't really expect the iPod to translate
into increased sales numbers for the Mac.
And even if more students are using Macs, it's not as if that means
they'll continue to use them out in the real world. I mean, everybody
that that first smoked pot in college immediately stopped on
the day they graduated, right?

Atlanta Embraces New Trend in Computer
Help
09/23/2004 02:41 AMAs the complexity and functionality of computers has surged in recent
years, so has the number of software conflicts, hardware meltdowns,
rampaging viruses, and other digital gremlins. In more simple times a
technologically-inclined friend or neighbor could be called upon to
save the day, but now that same type of haphazard help is no longer
sufficient to cure modern malfunctions. With no choice but to seek
the help of licensed professionals, computer users have scrutinized
their options—and have been sorely disappointed. On the one hand they
can receive phone support, which is often difficult to understand and
is replete with communication barriers. On the other hand they can
take their computers to a local mom-and-pop repair shop, but
unfortunately that requires disassembling the entire system and
lugging it to and from a car. So what’s a computer owner to do?
High-tech experts like Keith Abbey have the answer: on-site computer
support. The growing trend of on-site services has begun to sweep
across the nation, which is why Abbey decided to ride the wave by
purchasing an Atlanta-based franchise with Geeks On Call® -- the
nation’s premier provider of on-site computer support. [PRWEB Sep 23,

3rd Wave Hits Atlanta
02/10/2004 02:40 AM3rd Wave, a provider of outsourced IT services for small- to
medium-sized businesses in Atlanta, is building Wi-Fi networks without
charge for venues around town as a way to drum up awareness of the
company: So far, it has built hotspots in 12 venues and expects to
have a total of 20 unwired by the end of next week. 3rd Wave doesn't
charge for setup or ongoing maintenance and its only requirement is
that the venues in turn offer the connection to customers free of
charge. 3rd Wave listened to its workers who suggested that a coffee
shop across the street from its offices set up a Wi-Fi network so they
could work from the shop. When the store, part of a national chain,
began offering Wi-Fi, it came with a fee that was too high for 3rd
Wave workers' tastes. "So we sat down and thought, 'what if we wired
up places like that?'" said Mike Landman, president of 3rd Wave. The
company initially approached a few venues in town and started setting
up networks, but since the word has gotten out, owners of coffee
shops, bookstores, and restaurants are now coming to 3rd Wave asking
for the free setup. Shops that offer the connection also set out table
tents (self-standing flyers) that mention 3rd Wave. The gateway signup
page that users see when they fire up their computers' browser for the
first time on the network displays a 3rd Wave logo and a description
of the company. 3rd Wave has a few requirements for which venues it
will build the networks for. "They have to be retail with business
traffic, so if you're in the sticks or only cater to 15 year olds we
wouldn't offer it," Landman said. Some shops that have been denied
have offered to pay 3rd Wave for the setup and ongoing maintenance.
"So we're entertaining that idea," he said. Landman particularly
targets venues nearby his offices. "We want to keep where we set them
up close to where we are to build a sense of community," he said. 3rd
Wave uses access points (APs) and software from Sputnik. That software
lets 3rd Wave remotely reboot the AP and remotely determine what may
be causing a problem. Landman credits the quality of the APs for the
fact that his workers spend just 30 minutes setting up each network.
3rd Wave has committed to buying...

06/17/2005 03:19 PM Atlanta has been a laggard in major airport Wi-Fi coverage: They've
been discussing airport access as part of a broader citywide Wi-Fi
service since 2004. The airport was supposed to be unwired this
spring, but let's not blame them for ambitious plans. The company that
was to provide this service still says coming soon on their Atlanta
FastPass page, the name for this project. The airport will offer
service on a wholesale basis to providers which will resell it or
include it to their customers, an approach which seems to offer the
least friction. The service will cost $3 million to install. The
article doesn't mention anything about the larger Atlanta project....
