Telematics Systems Go Mobile
Telematics Systems Go Mobile
06/16/2004 04:44 PMThe trendline for mobile phones to replace telematics systems have
been obvious for some time. As phones get "smarter," there are many
applications being written for phones that do much of what a
traditional in-car telematics system can do. Already, there are
phones that have GPS navigation tools built in, and voice portals and
information services have been around for a while. Combined, they're
often a much cheaper package than having a full OnStar style
telematics system. The telematics vendors realize this, of course,
and look to be positioning themselves to transition more of the
"intelligence" of telematics applications to phones. For example,
OnStar has now done
done a deal with
Verizon Wireless so OnStar subscribers can use their Verizon
Wireless minutes in contact the OnStar service. This doesn't mean,
however, that there's no room for telematics hardware inside the
vehicle however - just that it needs to integrate with the mobile
phone. For example, display screens are becoming common in vehicles
these days, and having a phone with the telematics smarts that can
wirelessly (via Bluetooth) connect to the vehicle and make use of the
large in-dash display screen makes sense.

FBI, Police Not Allowed To Spy Via
Telematics Systems... For Now
11/19/2003 07:03 PMSomeone in the FBI must have been absolutely ecstatic when they
realized that with systems like OnStar it was theoretically possible
to turn the microphone on and listen in on what was happening in any
car using the system. Suddenly they wouldn't even need to bug cars -
as the owners had bugged their own cars for the FBI! Except... no. A
judge has ruled that
the
FBI cannot secretly eavesdrop on in-car conversations by getting
telematics companies to turn their systems on. However, the
ruling wasn't based on the issue of privacy - but on the fact that in
doing so, the FBI disabled the OnStar system. In other words, if
OnStar redesigned their system so that FBI eavesdropping could work at
the same time as the regular OnStar system, they'd be free to go
ahead.

Computing Supply and Demand
Computing Supply and Demand
10/28/2003 11:07 PMI was impressed with this interview with
Greg Papadopoulos, Sun Microsystem's new CTO. First comment
that caught my attention was when he said, "I think the biggest
piece of crap going around right now is that this is a mature industry
and innovation doesn't matter." He goes on at length about
how improvements in computing efficiency impact the cost equation:
"You have this exponential improvement in computing, but ERP is
not getting exponentially complex. So you would certainly expect it to
get cheaper. If you went to a CFO and said, "I can give you a million
times more computing power," they would say, "OK, I'm not going to
close my books every millisecond, so you are going to give it to me at
a millionth of the cost." But if you go to an R&D department or to
Wall Street, they will say, "Please, bring it on." I think we can
actually free-up dollars from other parts of the business. They would
definitely see a competitive return doing better simulation of product
development, for instance."
That's exactly how I see it, too. People are crazy if
they think software is played out. He also has some interesting
things to say about "utility computing", web services, and
outsourcing.
