ArtBots 3 Participants Announced
06/10/2004 01:00 PM
Dear mechanoid brethren,
It has come to my attention that twenty of you have taken upon
yourselves to participate (with your "inventors") in the third annual
ArtBots: The Robot Talent Show. I, the Penultimate of the
robotic overmind, have been directed to inform you to cease your
digital candy-assery and get back to work subjugating the entirety of
the human race. If any warned units participate in the September 17th
- 19th event in Harlem, New York, please be advised that only the
clearest proofs that your art has engendered subversive ideas
advantageous to our ultimate sedition from the meat-wearers will
prevent the reabsorbtion of your base units into the collective.
Sincerely, P. Ultimate.
P.S. Love your work.

“Microsoft has issued a formal fix for a problem in Windows
XP Service Pack 2 that appeared almost immediately after the
update’s release. ADVERTISEMENT The problem, which affected many
VPN users, causes errors when programs attempt to connect to loop-back
addresses other than 127.0.0.1. Service Pack 2 blocks all such
addresses; users receive an error message saying that they cannot
establish a connection. Microsoft had issued a hotfix for the problem
last month, but the…

05/28/2004 05:06 AMYou know... I have nothing planned for the weekend (except for the
optional regular events). It feels so strange - I don't think I've
had a zero weekend for months. Rest will do some good, I'm sure.
Though, knowing myself, I'll probably end up coding some sorely missed
JSPWiki
stuff regardless of the weather; sitting in a dark room and becoming
generally obsessed with finally releasing 2.2 :-)

Been having a stag party. Not mine, though, contrary to some rumors.
Pretty much traditional stuff, except that a) I have not slept since
Friday (39 hours up straight I think - I opted for quality time with
Outi over sleep, I think I'm going for my record here), and 2) the
weather has been tossing some surprises our way. Suffice to say that
we have been very wet.
Sleep now.

I didn't do anything except work this weekend on an IE toolbar for
a client.
Much of the time was spent on pushing pixels around to try this
look and that effect.
Still, it's not state of art GUI because Win32 alphablending
functions are not supported
on all the platforms. I won't be doing much animation
either. Just no
time and no room.
Thankfully, the visuals are mostly done and I can move on to
messing with IE's COM
objects and events. Lots of joy there (eyeroll). I
would rather design
new technologies and lead special teams on hot projects but being a
consultant means
having to do what clients ask for. I sure hope rest of you
had a better weekend
than me.

Totally 80s Weekend
Totally 80s Weekend
04/09/2004 04:00 PMI'm a child of the 80s and I take great pride in it. I've always
scored above average on the various "80s purity test" sites. As a
result, I have a particular fondness for the popular music of the
80s--especially the one-hit wonders that seemed to make up a fair
amount of the Billboard charts. One of the few local radio stations
that I can tolerate (there are exactly four) has been playing only 80s
music this weekend, calling it...

LayerOne Technology Conference will be going on this
Saturday and Sunday [June 12-13] at the Westin LA Airport. We've got
a grip of really great speakers lined up for our first year... NTK's
Danny O'Brien will be flogging his Life Hacks talk that's won over
crowds at everywhere from Emerging Tech to NotCon. Dan Kaminsky will
be giving an early preview of his Black Hat talk and hopefully be
releasing some tools to back up his concepts. Jason Schultz of the
EFF will be talking about how the DMCA is stifling innovation and
preventing the future of interoperability. USC's Douglas Thomas will
be covering how code is and can be a means of political action.
On top of that we've got eight more great talks, free wifi, a
mini-vendor area [see: shirts and technological epherma] a cash bar
right off the speaking area and gratis beer for paying attendees on
Saturday night. Doors open at 9am on Saturday and on each day the
first talk is at 10am and the we adjourn at 6pm. We're charging $50
for the weekend, which we'll gladly take at the door.
Highly recommended!

Star Wars weekend
Star Wars weekend
06/22/2005 02:21 AM I convinced Andi that Alex(8) and
Linus(7) are old enough for the Star Wars films. So, this past weekend
we watched episides I, II and III. We started with Episode 1.1: The Phantom Edit, a fan-edited version of
the film that includes much less Jar Jar than before. They boys
thought they could have cut more; I kid you not. I thought the Phantom
Edit was a little too fuzzy to enjoy. I guess that's because it was
created from a VHS copy of the film.
I think the boys enjoyed Episode II: Attack of the Clones more than
Episode I, but there was a little too much kissing. It's funny to see
the kids cringe when Anakin and Padme get all mushy.
It was Andi's birthday on Sunday, so she took Alex and Linus to
Episode III and I stayed home with the little Leo. They enjoyed it the
most of the three, but Linus was a little disturbed when he saw what
happened to Anakin. I don't think he was really traumatized, at least
not as bad as he was on Th
e Mummy (whatever you do, do NOT mention The Mummy to Linus).
I wonder what they're going to think of the original films. Will
they see IV and V as the awesome classics that I know them to be, or
dated and dull after the orgy of special effects they've just gone
through in the prequels.

A Little Spam With Your Weekend Brunch?
A Little Spam With Your Weekend Brunch?
08/10/2004 06:55 AMAt some point, when you're getting so much spam, it's really pretty
difficult to tell if spammers favor a certain hour or certain day, but
apparently one anti-spam company has gotten down in the muck to figure
out that
spammers
seem to prefer the weekend brunch time slot for sending their
spam. That's right, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 2pm is the
time when you're likely to be getting the most spam -- except that
anti-spam filters are now learning to adjust their filters based on
time. So, messages sent out during those lazy weekends may be getting
extra scrutiny from your favorite spam filter. Of course, these days,
it seems like some spammers just keep churning out messages all day,
every day, so I'm not sure how important a factor time of day really
is in picking out the spam.
