Griffin RoadTrip US Sale Delayed 09/15/2004 11:22 AM

griffin_roadtrip.jpg imageHrm, it looks like Griffin Technology might have run into a few snags with the FCC, as the order page for their new RoadTrip iPod dock is now saying the product is only on sale outside of the US. They've gotten one FM transmitter out the door before, though, so I would imagine this is just a - and I'm so sorry for this, truly - a bump in the road.

Or perhaps there was some confusing with the other RoadTrip FM transmitter that was coming to market at the same time? (Thanks, Matt!)

Griffin RoadTrip 08/13/2004 09:06 AM

griffin_roadtrip.jpg imagePeripheral maker Griffin has announced the RoadTrip, a multi-function iPod unit that serves as both a cradle, charger, and FM transmitter with digital readout. While it's not the most attractive unit I've ever seen - the faux brushed aluminum and readout is kind of corny - just having a separate interface for the FM transmitter will probably make it a favorite for many iTrip fans who have found FM transmitting to be useful but the iTrip's playlist-based interface lacking. Even cooler, the FM Transmitter can be removed from the cradle and used, via USB, to broadcast sound from any Mac or PC, turning it into a sort of low-powered radio station, or an FM-band Airport Express (without the Wi-Fi).

08/13/2004 07:17 AM
Griffin Technology has introduced RoadTrip, a 3-in-1 device that provides an FM transmitter, charger and cradle for all dock-capable iPod and iPod mini MP3 players. The transmitter broadcasts your music on any FM frequency on your car stereo, with a backlit display that shows which frequency is in use, while the charger keeps your iPod's battery at full capacity. The RoadTrip plugs into any 12-volt outlet or cigarette lighter in your car and its transmitter unit can be removed and plugged into a USB port on your computer, enabling music broadcast from it to any nearby FM stereo. Griffin has left the top of the US$79.99 device open for use with other iPod accessories, which means RoadTrip isn't compatible with the 1G and 2G iPods that have FireWire ports on top.

nwtfmtransmit.jpg imageWhat happens when two companies come out with an FM transmitter for the car called "RoadTrip" in the same week? Although Newer Technologies RoadTrip isn't as full featured as the one offered by Griffin, it does have the ability to work with any car-bound device that uses a miniJack out - it's not iPod only, I'm saying. But still, I have this funny feeling somebody's going to be get a letter soon, and we'll be mentioning who gets a rename. Considering Griffin sort of started the whole 'Trip trip with the iTrip, I'm betting on them.

Time for a serious roadtrip

Time for a serious roadtrip 02/10/2004 02:42 AM

States I've visited:
mymap.png

I had a pathetically sheltered youth. While I saw just about everything you could see in California, it was always from the inside of a car so we could only get so far in so many days. I think my first plane flight wasn't until I was 12, and that was to the faraway place of Arizona. At the age of 25 the farthest east I'd ever been was still Arizona. Even with all my web-related travel over the past few years I didn't surpass ten visited states until 2001 and now I stand at a paltry 14 at age 31.

I once worked with someone whose goal was having his kids see all 50 by the time they turned 18. He got pretty close, too. I think it's a worthy goal -- you can't appreciate the vastness, the differences, or the similarities in this nation and its people until you get out there and visit a bunch of places and meet a good deal of them.

prod_podpod.jpgg imageGriffin's new PodPod isn't the first iPod cupholder - Belkin has one, as do others - but I suppose if you want to keep all your iPod accessories Griffin-branded, the new $10 unit is a good choice. It's a hold, for iPod or iPod mini, that fit in a cupholder. That's it.

Well, there's a place for the cords to spill out through the bottom, but still. At least they finally got that name out of the way. I wonder how long they've been sitting on that, trying to think of something to build that would match it.

The $20 pair of plugs (you can only use one at a time) come with caps for easy attachment to your keychain. I've no idea how good they are compared to their respective competitors, but I'm all about plugging things into the iPod - that's half the reason they're so great in the first place (and why its so hard for other companies to play catch up).

prod_earjams_main.jpg imageGriffin is selling a set of snap-on covers for the iPod's trademark white earbuds called the 'EarJams,' that convert the headphones into in-ear versions. And although they come with three different sized plugs and a carrying case, pricing them at $20 seems like it might just be expensive enough to encourage people to look for a new set of headphones. I guess Griffin is counting on the cachet of the white earbuds to carry the day (never mind that you can get a set of white Sony in-ears for like $40).

Fantastic interview with Jim Griffin, one of the leading advocates of blanket licenses for online music, in The Register.
Broadcasting started out as a pirate technology. But as rights holders we'd rather not have bar owners and radio stations ringing us up and asking us for permission each time they wanted to play a song, because it would cost us more to answer than phone than it would gain us in revenue. So the US broadcast industry went to rights holders and created this bundled price with bundled choice, a sort of 'theme park admission fee' for content that allowed that cable operator, or satellite operator, or radio station, or bar to use the content without seeking permission.

Griffin Unveils the iTalk, SightLight 01/06/2004 09:19 AM
Griffin Tecnology has unveiled details for the iTalk, a voice recording accessory for the iPod, and the SightLight, a FireWire-based light for the iSight. Besides a stunning design, the iTalk features a built-in microphone design to record sound up to 100 feet away, automatic gain control to adjust recording levels, and a built-in speaker for easy and instant playback. The iTalk will be released in April and will retail for $40. The SightLight is a FireWire-based lighting add-on designed to work with the iSight camera. It slips over the end of the iSight and illuminates the camera's subject to compensate for low-light rooms. It also gives a warmer, more natural appearance to the camera subject. It has 3 settings, on, off, and auto, which automatically adjusts for the amount of light in the room. The SightLight will also retail for $40.
