U.S. Leads Home Wi-Fi Market
01/09/2004 09:52 PMAround 50 million homes in Europe, the United States, and Asia will
have Wi-Fi by 2007, according to report from BWCS: Today, about 5
million homes have Wi-Fi, and most of them are in the United States.
Around the world, 23 percent of broadband homes should have Wi-Fi by
2007. While some analysts commenting on Magis' recent bankruptcy say
the market isn't ready to connect various home electronics, this story
sites IDC research that says the next phase of Wi-Fi development will
come from connecting the computer, TV, cameras, and MP3 players. That
sounds like the next logical step and a great extension of use of
existing Wi-Fi networks....

Apple leads in booming global MP3 market
Apple leads in booming global MP3 market
06/22/2005 01:54 AMApple is the leader in worldwide MP3 sales with 30.2 percent of the
combined HDD and Flash-based MP3 market -- a market which recorded a
revenue increase of 200 per cent to reach approximately $4.5 billion
in 2004.
In-Stat released a report today that cited falling prices, the
availability of legitimate subscription and pay-per-download online
music sites, smaller hard disk drives and increasing Flash memory
capacities as reasons for the booming MP3 player market.
"As competition heats up, vendors are striving to differentiate
products by offering a wide range of price points, memory capacities
and features," said Stephanie Guza, In-Stat analyst. "As a result, we
are seeing increased segmentation. For example, the hard disk drive
(HDD) digital audio player segment can be subdivided into two
categories: the 1-inch or smaller segment and the 1.8-inch segment."
In-Stat also says that survey data shows that the percentage of U.S.
respondents owning a digital audio player has increased from 16% in
2001 to 25% in 2005.

China's Web
Police Send Mixed Message
...Internet cafe users in China have long been subject to an
extraordinary range of controls. They include cameras placed
discreetly throughout the establishments to monitor and identify users
and Web masters, and Internet cafe managers who keep an eye on user
activity, whether electronically or by patrolling the premises.
The average Internet user, meanwhile, neither sees nor, in many
cases, suspects the activities of a force widely estimated to number
as many as 30,000 Internet police officers. Experts on China's
Internet say the officers are constantly engaged in a cat-and-mouse
game with equally determined Web surfers, blocking access to sites
that the government considers politically offensive, monitoring users
who visit other politically sensitive sites and killing off discussion
threads on Internet bulletin boards.
[...]
Asked if the privacy of Internet users could be infringed, the
official said that the Shanghai government had noted the issue, but
added that "Internet bars are public areas, and some experts say that
what one says in a public area should not be considered
private."
"Some experts say".. ;-) Some experts will say
anything.
Seriously though, I can only see how this will get worse for both
sides. Obviously the "arms vendors" will make money in the
cat-and-mouse game, but can China afford to ramp up the Internet
police force as China gets more and more wired/wireless. I wonder how
long this "control" can continue and how much it's going to cost them.
I guess that for now, they believe the control is worth the price.
