Iranian Blog Crackdown

Iranian Blog Crackdown

Iranian Blog Crackdown 09/15/2004 03:32 AM

The latest from Hoder on Iranian weblogs is not good news. However, he does point out that Iranians trust the Net more than any other medium at this point. No wonder.

Update on a previous BoingBoing post: Persian blogger Hossein Derakshan points us to a weblog by Iranian MPs protesting a decision to ban thousands of reformists from next month's Iranian elections.
the good thing is that, apparently, while they have no access to any Iranian TV or Radio, they've embraced weblogs as a great means of a) publishing their announcements and program b) reaching the young Iranians who have long lost their interest in politics whatsoever.

Kyrgyz government bl0g crackdown update 03/24/2005 02:22 PM
Xeni Jardin: Boing Boing reader Paul says,
This is regarding the article you posted today on Kyrgyz .gov hijacking news websites. The article stated that there is a lack of foreign correspondents (true) and public access to the internet. As far as I know the Kyrgyz government has been progressive with public internet access and when I was there a year and half ago they had modern computers running XP with available peripheral devices such as scanners in the post office of nearly every town (including small towns of a few thousand people).

For recent pictures "on the ground" pictures from the Coalition for Democracy and Civil Society see here, blog photos here, Muslim Uzbekistan (AP/Reuters) photos here.

Iranian Nukes

Iranian Nukes 06/14/2004 12:28 AM

Iran's Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi recently said:

Iran will not give up its rights to the peaceful use of atomic energy as well as its right to supply nuclear fuel to its power plants.

OPEC's second largest oil producing nation needs nuclear power plants?  Note that Iran also has the world's second largest natural gas reserve.  Hmm.  Maybe they have the world's largest BS reserves they are dying to export.

Iranian graphics 12/24/2004 12:29 PM
David Pescovitz: Images Posters 015-1 Last week, my wife stumbled upon a small monograph of the work of Iranian graphic designer Reza Abedini. Arabic script is naturally beautiful, and I think Abedini's compositions, with text often a central graphic element, are incredibly fresh and emotional. Today, my friend Anne Sanger sent me a link to a great "Who's Who in Iranian Posters" page with links to even more information about the country's happening graphic design scene. Link

Iranian Blogs 02/19/2004 10:03 AM

Iran's blogging boom defies media control: There's an opportunity here for me to spew some long-winded treatise about how blogging is changing the world...but I'll just label this one as "pretty cool" and call it good.

Take one exasperated Iranian woman. Add a computer. Hook it up to the Internet. "And you have a voice in a country where it's very hard to be heard," said Lady Sun, the online identity of one of the first Iranian women to start a blog...

bl0g, and bl0g of the year!
03/14/2005 05:29 PM
Xeni Jardin: Boing Boing pal Scott Beale informs us that our blog just won Group Weblog of the Year at the Bloggies. OMG! What a huge honor! Thank you, Bloggies. We honestly didn't expect this, and we are deeply moved and grateful. There were many other deserving blogs up for awards, backed by talented folks who work very hard, and we raise our collective pirate-eye-patches in their honor: check 'em all out. On behalf of my blog-mates Cory Doctorow, Mark Frauenfelder, and David Pescovitz; our wise "band manager" John Battelle; our sysadmin par excellence Ken Snider; and the rest of the team and extended family that makes Boing Boing possible -- a humble thank you. But most of all, we are grateful to you, our readers, for wasting otherwise productive time on our collective scrapbook of "wonderful things," and for pointing us to even more of those wonderful and undiscovered things each day. We're really sorry that we couldn't make it to SXSW in person to accept the award, but we hope you'll join us in celebrating in person tomorrow at ETCON ( all five of us will be in the same place for the first time). Boing Boing sprouted online a little over five years ago, from paper zine roots planted by Mark Frauenfelder and Carla Sinclair. It is a privilege to blog for you. With you, we look forward to another adventurous year of link-discuss to come. Link

Update: Holy crap! Reader Nathaneal Heasley sez, "Not only did BB win best group ‘blog, it won “blog of the year/best weblog overall†– congratulations!" For those keeping track, this is the second year in a row Boing Boing has received these two awards: Link to 2004, Link to 2005. Man. We're speechless, and overwhelmed by your generosity.

    Cracking Iranian codes

Cracking Iranian codes 06/15/2004 10:17 AM

Bruce Schneier has written an interesting article discussing the accusation of Ahmed Chalabi of informing Iran that the US had broken its codes and when Iran knew that the NSA was cracking their codes. He digs into the history of Crypto AG, the NSA and Iran. He links to an article about Hans Buehler, the Crypto AG salesman who was arrested by Iran in 1992 on suspicion that Crypto AG had installed back doors in its encryption machines. There is no conclusion, but this story reminds me of Crytonomicon and the interesting world of information, misinformation and spying.

    12/28/2003 06:58 PM
The recent earthquake in Bam, Iran may have claimed as many as 40,000 lives by some estimates. Sorting through the Persian blogosphere, you'll find a number of sites where residents and expatriates are posting about this tragedy, and its impact on their country's future.

Hossein Derakshan has yet to sound out on his English-language site, but there's a post on his Farsi blog for those who read Farsi. Among the English-language sites where posts are already out: Persianblogger.com, Pesmanesque, Days of My Life In California, Iranian Truth, Iranfilter, Eyeranian, HumanFirstT henaProudIranian. Many more are listed here, including blogs written in Farsi (there are probably more than 12,000 of them -- here is a good background piece on the Persian blogosphere, from Wired News). And finally, Doug Rushkoff (not Persian) has this to say.

BoingBoing welcomes pointers to other sites sounding out on the Bam earthquake via this form.

    The New York Times
    Those Sexy Iranians

...True, girls and women can still be imprisoned for going out without proper Islamic dress. But young people are completely redefining such dress so it heightens sex appeal instead of smothering it.

Women are required to cover their hair and to wear either a chador cloak or an overcoat, called a manteau, every time they go out, and these are meant to be black and shapeless. But the latest fashion here in Shiraz, in central Iran, is light, tight and sensual.

"There are some manteaus with slits on the sides up to the armpits," said Mahmoud Salehi, a 25-year-old manteau salesman. "And then there are the `commando manteaus,' with ties on the legs to show off the hips and an elastic under the breasts to accentuate the bust."

Worse, from the point of view of hard-line mullahs, young women in such clothing aren't getting 74 lashes any more — they're getting dates.

Iranian blogger Hoder has started a photo blog and some of the recent images show us what they're talking about.

Persian photobl0g: Those Sexy Iranians 05/10/2004 03:02 PM
Hossein Derakshan says, "I've launched my photoblog, titled "vagrantly." Here's the latest image post, about the Islamic dress code and Nicholas Kristof's New York Times column this weekend about 'sexy Iranians.'"
No one has challenged the cleric's rule more effectively than these young Iranian girls. They have totally changed the Islamic dress code during the past five years. The half-sliced heads of the mannequins are results of Islamic laws that prohibit making identical statues to humans.

    Iranian Blogs challenge President

Iranian Blogs challenge President 12/11/2003 11:53 PM
Iranian bloggers challenge the President in the Summit: It all started from a post on the Geneva Summit's blog, DailySummit, asking Iranians to report on the Net censorship. Then, they asked them to post their questions for the Iranian President, who was going to have a press conference. Then reporters asked the questions from the president: Is the there a blacklist for Iranian websites? Do you read Persian weblogs? How hard is it to connect to the Net in Iran? Later they asked tougher questions from the Minister of Telecommunications: Why don't they public the blacklist? Why Sina Motallebi, the blogger, was arrested? Isn't the summit about how technolo gy benefits democracy and human rights? Blogs can definitely be a big part of the answer.
