Do Mesh Networks Scale? Two Views
Do Mesh Networks Scale? Two Views
07/06/2004 03:22 PMThe head of a mesh company argues mesh networks don't scale -- and one
of the folks behind an open-source mesh software project examines the
argument: MeshDynamics sells a multiple-radio solution for mesh
networking, and the head of the firm wrote a brief article explaining
why single-radio mesh networks can't work beyond a very small
deployment. I asked Sascha Meinrath of the CUWiN project for his
feedback on Francis daCosta's comments. Sascha writes: While I do
think that Francis daCosta brings up some potential pitfalls to
wireless mesh networks, the doomsday picture he presents is based on a
flawed understanding of how mesh networking topographies work. I'll
explain below: deCosta wrote: 1- Radio is a shared medium and forces
everyone to stay silent while one person holds the stage. Wired
networks, on the other hand, can and do hold multiple simultaneous
conversations. 2- In a single radio ad hoc mesh network, the best you
can do is (1/2)^^n at each hop. So in a multi hop mesh network, the
Max available bandwidth available to you degrades at the rate of 1/2,
1/4, 1/8. By the time you are 4 hops away the max you can get is 1/16
of the total available bandwidth. This problem exists only when all
tranceivers within a mesh topography "see" each other. And herein is
the flaw in the argument. Within a mesh network Request To Sends
(RTSs) do silence nodes within range; however this degradation moves
in waves--so if part of a mesh consisted of 7 nodes (of which G is
connected to the Internet): A----------------->
------B-----------------> ------------C-----------------> | Internet
Connection Here's what would happen. A would pass a packet to B; when
B passed a packet to C, A couldn't talk--thus the 1/2 reduction in
throughput; when C passed it to D, the same problem would occur for
both A & B (thus a 1/4 throughput); likewise for D to E (because D
would silence A, B, & C), thus a 1/8th throughput. However, when E
passes a packet to F, A is unaffected, when F passes a packet to G,
both A & B are unaffected. Thus, in this solution, throughput
would theoretically max out at 1/8th (which is probably still much
more throughput than the average Internet connection--where the usual
bottleneck resides). What this really points to is the need for power
control in radios (which is something that CUWiN wants...

Another Billion into Networks, as Sprint
PCS Heads for 3G; Cingular Makes Plans,
Too
06/22/2004 10:34 AMSprint PCS joins the third-generation cellular rush in the U.S. by
committing a billion dollars to building a 1xEV-DO network: The
company had previously signaled its interest in waiting and then
deploying an EVDV (data/voice) network that might have had higher
download speeds and integrated voice into the same 3G footprint. Now
they say that some markets will have their brand of service year's end
with many more in 2005. Cingular, meanwhile said today that UMTS could
appear as soon as next year. Cingular had recently expressed doubts
that with the current available spectrum they could deploy 3G data
networks before 2006. Now, they plan a trial of two kinds of UTMS: one
operates at 384 Kbps (unclear if this is the rated speed or the
typical speed), and another at up to 14.4 Mbps. That's megabits per
second. Trials will start in Atlanta this summer, and extend in 2005
to the rest of the country. AT&T Wireless, which Cingular is in
the middle of acquiring, has reiterated its plans in the last few
months to try UMTS's W-CDMA flavor in a few cities by the end of 2004.
T-Mobile's plans are obscure, but EDGE (2.5G/100 Kbps) should be on
its way. Nextel will most likely pursue a private cell data plan with
higher speeds but that use none of the popular flavors. Suddenly, some
towns with no-better-than-modem wireless speeds could have four
competing cellular data networks with 100 to 400 Kbps average download
speeds. (All of these flavors ostensibly have restricted uploads of
about 50 Kbps, however.) Expect price competition. At $80 per month
flat for Verizon Wireless's high-speed network, the race to the bottom
will start in earnest. Verizon Wireless will still likely have a leg
up by offering service first in most competitive cities....

How Many Social Networks Is Too Many?
How Many Social Networks Is Too Many?
11/14/2003 02:29 AMI keep reading about all these "social networking software" plays, and
the amazing thing to me is that, unlike during the last bubble,
everyone except people working for these companies
or
venture capitalists seem to know it's a bubble. Yet, they keep on
coming. The latest is that
Evite has launched their own version of Friendster
tied to their event organizing system, and eMode (known for their fun
tests and dating system) has changed their name to Tickle, which is
what their Friendster wannabe is called. They also bought another
social networking service, to take one of about 100 off the market.
Who the hell signs up for all of these systems?
Paten
ts aside, there is
nothing complicated in creating such a
site (there's even one Friendster rip off
called Yet Another Friendster Rip Off). The
complication comes in actually making money from such a site. The odd
thing, though, is the rampant skepticism about these sites. In the
90s bubble years, it was never like this. Sure, there was some
skepticism, but not the near universal skepticism that is focused on
social software space right now. What's funny is that you would think
so much skepticism would make the VCs stay away, but the reverse is
happening.

more airlines start doing this, it will be interesting to watch what
happens to the companies that are already offering fee-based services
in airports. That seems to be a big business, with hotspot providers
signing exclusive deals with airports. I wonder what sort of rights
airlines have to build Wi-Fi networks in the gates they often use.
Glenn has heard from some folks in the industry that airports are
starting to assert rights to spectrum that they previously left alone,
or encoding these rights in new contracts as airline leases expire....

How to Pay for Municipal Networks
How to Pay for Municipal Networks
09/21/2004 02:46 PMSome municipalities may have already learned some lessons about
offering telecom services that they can consider when deciding to
build Wi-Fi networks: Some of the most successful municipal offerings
of wired telecom services started out with small trial networks and
were offered by municipalities that already offer utility services to
customers. But beyond whether a municipality has experience with
billing and marketing a service, Wi-Fi presents a bunch of additional
uncertainties. In the wired example, in many cases the market doesn't
have any other option for broadband Internet access and customers
definitely pay for the access. In the case of Wi-Fi, in many cases
other service providers may already offer wireless access. Plus,
cities have to decide whether they want to offer access for free or
for a fee. If they want to deliver free networks, they have to decide
how to fund it, considering both the initial outlay and ongoing
support costs. Ultimately, citizens of communities may end up
deciding. In St. Cloud, Fla., the city is trying to decide how to pay
for the ongoing maintenance of the network and will likely ask
residents to decide on a ballot referendum. If municipalities decide
to ask residents to pay for access, they have to hope they can cover
their costs. At this stage in the market, based on the experiences of
commercial Wi-Fi providers, it's not clear that an operator can make
money from for-fee networks....
