IBM's Massive Grid Storage System Not
Working So Well
07/28/2004 01:06 PMIBM has been touting their grid/utility computing effort and it's
ability to distribute and scale the load as high as necessary. They
certainly picked a big project to prove some of the grid storage
claims, and now it's looking like they may have bitten off way more
than they can realistically chew. They're supposed to be setting up a
grid-based storage system that can store 34 terabytes of data a day
continuously, with that number growing to 100 terabytes a day a few
years later. The project is a particle accelerator that will be
continuously generating a ton of data analyzing 40 million particle
collisions per second. The only problem is that, so far, IBM hasn't
been able to get the system to handle more than 28 terabytes of data
(less than a single day's worth) and there has yet to be a single
successful test, as
the system apparently hangs and crashes every time they try. Of
course, it's not unusual for projects not to work well early on, but
there are growing concerns that this isn't just early problems, but a
more fundamental issue about how this storage system is supposed to
work.

Linksys Network Storage Link, Turn Any
USB Harddrive Into Network Storage
06/15/2004 11:54 AM
While they're promoting it
with Maxtor, there's nothing stopping you from using Linksys's new
Network Storage Link (NSLU2) with any external USB hard drive to turn
it into a network storage device (not unlike the Mirra or other backup
units). Storage Link even provides passworded web-access to files and
multiple users (although they don't get into the details of how
multi-user sharing will work). Since the Storage Link works via RJ-45
(regular ol' Ethernet), there's nothing preventing you from attaching
it to a wireless router and using it over WiFi, either (albeit at
lower speeds than a wired network, of course). Even better, it sounds
like you can continue to add additional USB hard drives to the device
to increase storage as you go along. Not bad for $100.

Portable and off the grid
Portable and off the grid
12/03/2003 04:55 PM Necessity Is the Mother of Invention. (NY
Times, reg. req.) Amy
Smith teaches MIT students about the politics of delivering
technology to poor nations and the nitty-gritty of mechanical
engineering and helped start the
IDEAS competition; she herself designed
(among other things) a screenless
hammer mill suited to third-world conditions and using
"materials available to a blacksmith in
Senegal."
Smith's entire life is like one of her
inventions, portable and off the grid. At 41, she has no kids, no car,
no retirement plan and no desire for a Ph.D. Her official title:
instructor. ''I'm doing exactly what I want to be doing. Why would I
spend six years to get a Ph.D. to be in the position I'm in now, but
with a title after my name? M.I.T. loves that I'm doing this work. The
support is there. So I don't worry.''...
Likewise, the inventors who most inspire her will never strike it
rich. ''There are geniuses in Africa, but they're not getting the
press,'' she says. She gushes about Mohammed Bah
Abba, a Nigerian teacher who came up with the pot-within-a-pot
system. With nothing more than a big terra-cotta bowl, a little pot,
some sand and water, Abba created a refrigerator -- the rig uses
evaporation rather than electricity to keep vegetables cool.
Innovations that target the poorest of the poor don't have to be
complicated to make a big difference. The best solution is sometimes
the most obvious.
A rare optimistic story for these
downbeat times.

With the advent of broadband, GPRS, UMTS, the world is becoming a more
and more connected place.
Ubiquitous
computing is slowly permeating into normal day-to-day life. People
are getting used to 'always being connected', and share the resources
they have, sometimes with friends or acquintances, but mostly with
total strangers, often living great distances away. Most of the time,
the resources being shared are limited to audio- and/or video streams,
webcams and filesharing with P2P software. What with home- and office
systems becoming more and more powerful, high-performance computing
for the masses is becoming a reality. The
SETI@Home
statistics prove that the Internet can be used as a large
supercomputer. The idea of the private grid initiative is that people
start using the very respectable, often unused, computing resources
they have at their disposal for new and different projects they have
not thought of before. This site is provided as a service, so
academics and technical people can meet people who have ideas about
what they could or would do if they could unlock the resources they
have. On the other hand, it might help the sciences if they get
feedback from people that are not yet locked into a certain way of
thinking.This has been added to

The Semantic Grid
The Semantic Grid
04/28/2004 05:53 AMThe Semantic Gridhttp://www.semanticgrid.org/e-Science
offers a promising vision of how computer and communication technology
can support and enhance the scientific process. It does this by
enabling scientists to generate, analyse, share and discuss their
insights, experiments and results in a more effective manner. The
underlying computer infrastructure that provides these facilities is
commonly referred to as the Grid. At this time, there are a number of
grid applications being developed and there is a whole raft of
computer technologies that provide fragments of the necessary
functionality. However there is currently a major gap between these
endeavours and the vision of e-Science in which there is a high degree
of easy-to-use and seamless automation and in which there are flexible
collaborations and computations on a global scale. Our vision of the
infrastructure that is needed to support the full richness of the
e-Science vision draws on research and development in both the Grid
and the
Semantic Web, and
adopts a service-oriented approach. We call it the Semantic Grid. This
