Xeni Jardin:
"Born to be unwired"? Motorola and Italian design firm Momodesign
teamed up to create a Bluetooth-enabled motorcycle helmet. Something
about the combination of bluetooth and motorcycles sounds really
scary. Snip from the press release:
Built on the award-winning design of Motorola's popular HS810, the
wireless helmet headset is the latest addition to Motorola's leading
portfolio of stylish and innovative Bluetooth products. (...) The
helmet is stylish and open-faced, its design draws inspiration from
air force pilots helmets, with anti-scratch visor and carbon fibre
details for fashion conscious people with a modern approach to travel
and city life. Whether chatting to friends or work, the Motorola /
MOMODESIGN helmet means riders will no longer get tangled up in
awkward wires getting on and off their bikes. Taking and making calls
is easy as all functions (answer, end, redial, voice dial and volume)
can be made from the cover on the helmet. An essential accessory for
urbanites who demand to stay in touch at all times, whether in the
car, on a bike, in the office or at home. The Motorola / MOMODESIGN
helmet offers you seamless communication due to the unique headset
module. There need be no break in the conversation when you get off
the bike -- just remove the headset module from the helmet, attach it
to the neck loop and continue talking -- no one will even know you've
changed location!

Momodesign, maker of all sorts of
middle-to-high-end automotive and cycling parts has revealed their new
Bluetooth Motorcycle Helmet, the result of a collaboration with
Motorola. And while the technology itself isn't especially notable -
it is just a Bluetooth headset, after all - I think the helmet design
is just lovely. I'm a huge fan of open-face helmets, even if they
aren't as safe. Jaw-droppingly unsafe, you could say.
And if you're taking a call on the helmet and have stopped riding,
the headset detaches and can be worn in a neck loop. Now I just need
to get a bike.

Over 200 of the patrol officers bussed in as part of the
Department of Homeland Security's ramp up to the Republican National
Convention will be equipped with wirelessly networked helmet cameras.
Each of the helmet cams will broadcast back to a central control room
where officials will be able to monitor and compile a bigger picture
of what exactly is being seen by the security officers.
The units don't use Wi-Fi, though, so cracking the system used by
the security forces might be a little difficult (if that's your
thing). Instead, the camera uploads via satellite, which then travels
back to the central booth via an encrypted internet stream.
Wouldn't it be great if the public could see those streams, too?
Maybe one of the hacker groups will cobble together a free network
equivalent.

ience-fair-projects.com/Today your teacher announced
that your school is going to have a science fair and students are
responsible for exhibiting their projects. What do you feel?
Enthusiastic? Despondent? Dreadful? Fearful? Excited?" This statement
opens the Super Science Fair Projects site. Actually, whether student
or parent, science fair projects, while great ways to get students
actively involved in learning the scientific method and problem
solving, can be tough assignments. This site may help you with one of
the hardest parts: coming up with an idea. The site does a great job
of walking the visitor through the steps needed to plan and implement
a project, from Choosing a Topic, the Scientific Method, and writing
the Project Report. There are even tips on displaying your project,
rehearsing, winning over judges, and what to expect the day of the
fair. This is definitely a great tool to tap into when planning a
science fair project.[From The NSDL Scout Report for Math,

Cambodian hybrid motorcycle/WiFi network
Cambodian hybrid motorcycle/WiFi network
01/26/2004 01:11 AMIn Cambodia, WiFi-equipped motorcyclists pull up to schools, download
all the email, drive to the next village, and dump off copies of
locally-destined mail, picking up that community's load and delivering
it along to the next town.
It is a digital pony express: five Motomen ride their routes five days
a week, downloading and uploading e-mail. The system, developed by a
Boston company, First Mile Solutions, uses a receiver box powered by
the motorcycle's battery. The driver need only roll slowly past the
school to download all the village's outgoing e-mail and deliver
incoming e-mail. The school's computer system and antenna are powered
by solar panels. Newly collected data is stored for the day in a
computer strapped to the back of the motorcycle. At dusk, the
motorcycles converge on the provincial capital, Ban Lung, where an
advanced school is equipped with a satellite dish, allowing a bulk
e-mail exchange with the outside world.
