Making Content More Mobile
Making Content More Mobile
01/04/2005 04:11 AMAs we head into CES time, there are a ton of stories about the various
gadgets and technologies that are on display, and one that keeps
getting mentioned is
Orb's offering to let
you access multimedia content from your PC via any web-browser,
even on a mobile device. We had
mention
ed them before, noting that what they're doing isn't all that
different from what others have done -- but they're much more focused
on setting themselves up to confront the entertainment industry. Part
of this is that they're also working on a system to let a user watch
their television from anywhere. What's most interesting, however, is
that the concept behind Orb is about taking the same content that is
available elsewhere and making it reusable on different devices. This
is actually a different way of thinking about content than many in the
broadcast industry seem to have these days. They mostly look at
content and tie it specifically to a device. Other devices are viewed
as
separate revenue opportunities. Witness the bizarre idea of
building an entire broadcast TV network
just
for mobile phones. With something like Orb, this wouldn't be
necessary. Instead, you make the content, put it out there, and let
the users, applications and devices sort out what works best in what
places for what people on what devices. That seems like a much better
way to actually offer people what they want than simply deciding for
them how they must want their content.

Owning The Content Is A Disadvantage In
Offering A Mobile Service
Owning The Content Is A Disadvantage In
Offering A Mobile Service
03/31/2005 07:20 AMOne of the bad ideas coming out of those who believe that content is
king in the mobile world is that new wireless carriers that are
content owners will thrive. That's leading to odd predictions, such
as the idea that
Time Warner
will make a good MVNO just because they have content. Wasn't that
the
rationale
for AOL's merger with Time Warner? We all remember how that
turned out. The fact that they have content is meaningless. First,
no one is buying a mobile phone
for
the content specifically. However, much more importantly, for the
to be value in the content, it has to be equally accessible to
everyone. As content companies like Disney, Time Warner and Universal
try to launch their own mobile carriers (as MVNOs), people are going
to start to wonder
why they
can only get their Disney content from DisneyMobile. What if they
want some Disney content, some Sony content and some Universal Studios
content? Will they need to buy three separate phones with three
separate plans? The internet works because anyone can access any
content no matter who their service provider is. That openness is
what makes it worthwhile. Locked up content, walled gardens and
exclusivity only serve to decrease the value of each of these services
across the board.
