Remix Outfoxed 09/15/2004 09:25 AM
Robert Greenwald has released the interviews from Outfoxed under a Creative Commons license, inviting others to remix the interviews to tell their own story about Fox. Robert had wanted to release the full film for remix, but fears about enabling the reuse of original Fox materials got that idea stopped. But you can download and rework the interviews from archive.org here. A bittorrent file is available here from Torrentocracy. See the blog entry there, and here.

The film is made from "ephemeral film," meaning film not copyrighted when originally published. The supply of such film officially ended in 1978, when all film is automatically (federally) copyrighted.

music remix

music remix 06/05/2004 01:42 PM
Jerry Lobdill writes with this interesting story about a remix culture now regulated:
This is an example of the kind of art flamenco is--or was. And I speak particularly about the guitar here. The roots of flamenco are lost in the mists of time. They go back at least into the late 1700s, but probably farther. At this time there are over 40 distinct forms which are each characterized by a specific repetitive rhythmic pattern termed "compas", a specified musical mode (major, minor, or phrygian), and certain signature resolution phrases or other unique musical features.  I have played flamenco guitar for 47 years. When I was learning to play, the current versions of the forms could be traced back to a few virtuosos who came on the scene as early as 1905 or thereabouts. Every form is played as a series of sections that are distinct in melody and are sandwiched between more or less standard rhythmic sections characteristic of the form. The melodic sections are called "falsetas". The sections are played in whatever order a player chooses and players spend spare time trying to invent new falsetas or modifying old ones. Most players know the genealogy of their falsetas to some extent, but anything that is older than a couple of generations is usually of unknown origin.  Lore has it that great flamenco guitarists invent falsetas on the fly during performance. This is nonsense. But that's another story. Hardly any guitarist can read music and/or uses any kind of notation to commit falsetas to paper. In the cante (song) the verses (letras) and the melodies are generally very old though most are associated with the name of the originator.  Through the 1950s it was expected that players would play mostly traditional things with minor additional innovations. The falsetas of a particular player did not usually evolve from one recording to the next, and, indeed, players had favorite falsetas that they played for years. But as soon as recording industry moguls got involved all that changed. Nowadays they are claiming copyright on everything that is recorded, even the traditional portions that have been played since antiquity. Guitarists such as Paco de Lucia are pushed and prodded to innovate, and he has said publicly that the creation of new material is the most difficult part of what he does in this modern environment. Yet even his innovations (when he plays flamenco instead of the bastardized watered down stuff he mostly plays these days) contain traditional resolution phrases and rhythmic sections that define the forms and are ancient anonymous creations. Spanish copyright has gone crazy locking up the public domain along with the new in recent years. I have reams of manuscript transcripts of fabulous flamenco guitar music that will never be published because of the abuse and tyranny of copyright law. Like many non-Spanish flamenco guitar players, I play what I consider to be the best--just like Spaniards did before commercialization of the art. It's sad that all this will never be published for the enjoyment of the world.
(cf. "It's simple.")

A BoingBoing art exclusive: the latest watercolor from Moira Hahn, whose illustration work has appeared in Time, the New Yorker, and elsewhere. About this remix of classic ukiyo-e art -- which depicts a backyard conflict between cats and birds -- Moira says "Kuniyoshi was an influence, the primary Edo period ukiyo-e artist who regularly depicted cats... [but] most of this composition has been changed from various Edo and Meiji sources. The original figures were human, patterns were different, and there was no owl." [Ed. note: Dude, is that Waldo from Hatebeak on the far left?]

Remix Nine Inch Nails

Remix Nine Inch Nails 04/16/2005 09:10 PM
Phillip Torrone @ Make:
Make your own Nine Inch Nails

MacMinute has a story about Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails making the band's new single, "The Hand That Feeds" available to download for Mac users with GarageBand to mix and mash up (an actual multi-track audio session). "For quite some time I've been interested in the idea of allowing you the ability to tinker around with my tracks -- to create remixes, experiment, embellish or destroy what's there," Reznor says. Here's a screenshot of it on my Mac (View image) and here's where to get it (70MB file). Here are a couple of the first remixes!

How excellent. This is almost like open source music. It's one thing to say, "hey it's OK to sample this." It's taking it to a totally different level to publish it as a Garage Band project. Now if only they would put some kind of Creative Commons license on it, it would be perfect.

Remix Reading Competition 03/19/2005 03:27 AM

Remix Reading is holding a remix competition. Here's an excerpt from their site:

After an extremely successful launch event, Remix Reading is pushing the boundaries of the local cultural community with a remix competition. Over the next month, we want to see who can create the best remix of a piece of work already on the website.

There will be four winners, one in each category (audio, image, text, video). They will each receive the following great prizes:

* Your work on a LOCA Records compilation CD (if LOCA like it enough)
* A Creative Commons t-shirt
* A DVD full of great Creative Commons videos
* A copy me / remix me compilation CD
* A copy of the Wired CD and that issue of the Wired magazine
* A CD from LOCA Records
* Stickers, badges and fake tattoos

The closing date is Monday 11th April and the winners will be announced on Friday 15th April. The competition is being judged by a panel from Remix Reading, Creative Commons and LOCA Records.

Wayne Mercier is a Vancouver slam poet who has just released his first book of poetry published, and along with it, a CD of him reading his work. He's made the entire audio of the CD available for downloand and remix under a Creative Commons license.
I'm really excited about this, not just because it's a way of getting my stuff out into the world, but because - to my knowledge - this is the first time this has been done in Canadian poetry. Coach House Press releases electronic editions of their author's work but retains copyright. Also the fact that this is audio, and thus open to extensive remixing and incorporation into larger, multimedia projects, is very cool.

AVN reports that "gigastar" (we love that term) Jenna Jameson is using her considerable talents and energy to fight an ongoing lawsuit against the adult industry by Acacia Research, who claims that porn sites which utilize streaming media technology are guilty of patent infringement. Quoth Ms. Jameson: "Acacia is making a blatant attempt to target the adult industry in its effort to extract unwarranted fees for alleged infringement of its patents ... If Acacia succeeds in intimidating adult site owners, they will move to mainstream sites and begin charging fees that will have to be passed on to everyone who uses the Internet." You can read more details on the case at the Internet Media Protective Association website; we really just wanted an excuse to post some pictures of Jenna we've had lying around in our bookmarks for a while.

Jenna Jameson, Janet Jackson, and The
Jesus Chainsaw Massacre

Jenna Jameson, Janet Jackson, and The
Jesus Chainsaw Massacre
04/15/2004 01:10 PM
The box office receipts in the US are in for the Easter weekend in the US, and The Jesus Chainsaw Massacre, in theatres for 7 weeks, has climbed back into the number one spot. At the same time, US Attorney General John Ashcroft has quietly begun an initiative to tackle a pernicious problem according to the religious right in the US: pornography. My question for the religious right is simple: how is it possible to embrace a movie so overwhelmingly violent in content, even encouraging parents to take their children to see it and ignore the R rating?: "The violence is necessary to understand the sacrifice Jesus made," First Family pastor Jerry Johnston says. His Baptist church has rented out a half-dozen theaters in Kansas City, Kan., and has reserved auditoriums Friday night for children 11 and older. Johnston concedes they'll be disturbed by the violence. "I hope they're disturbed enough to make their peace with Jesus." While at the same time, why does the religious right find depictions of plain vanilla sexual intercourse so immoral that it must require legal intervention to prevent people they don't even know from seeing it? What is the root of this strange dichotomy among the overly religious: sex very bad, violence no problem.
