Tell No Tales

Tell No Tales 10/29/2003 01:15 AM

From the maker of DoomBuggies.com, the excellent Haunted Mansion resource, comes the newly launched Tell No Tales, the unofficial tribute to the Pirates of the Caribbean.

Yeah, I've been checking back repeatedly to see if this site had launched. If that makes me a dork, I accept the nomenclature gladly.

Tales of Interoperability

Tales of Interoperability 03/06/2004 01:49 AM
The Register reports on a story that ran in a magazine called Computing Which? that details failures to get standard Wi-Fi gear from different manufacturers to interoperate: The editors tried to set up a Linksys 802.11g router and a Netgear bridge but couldn't get the two devices to interact. Eventually one Netgear help desk agent told the writers the products could be incompatible. It doesn’t appear that the original story is online so it's hard to know more about this trial. It sounds as though the aim of the report was to test how easy or difficult it is to set up wireless networks. The writers concluded that it's too hard to use. It would be unfortunate if the industry has a hard time attracting additional users because the products are inoperable and difficult to use....

Tsunami tales

Tsunami tales 12/28/2004 05:19 PM
Behind the doleful ticker tape of news stories about rising death counts in Southern Asia, the Web is humming with firsthand accounts of the tsunami's wave of destruction. One of the most compelling is a string of ongoing dispatches from BBC reporters in affected areas. On Tuesday, for instance, Roland Buerk in Sri Lanka notes that tourists who were killed are being placed in mass graves alongside native inhabitants who have also perished. "Apparently the people who are burying them are trying to make a note of where the graves are," he reports, "and if they find a passport they are taking a note of that too, in the hope that perhaps one day those remains might be returned to their home countries." Buerk's personal account of when the tsunami first struck him in a Sri Lanka beach house is also striking. "We swam out of the room neck deep in water, forcing our way through the tables and chairs in the restaurant and up into a tree."

Tales from the Mental Hospital. "I fought them the best I could, but it was no use at all. I was rather quickly overpowered and dragged inside. A smart person would have just given up at that point, but at the time I was by no means a smart person. I started pulling and struggling to get these guys off me. This only made the situation worse, as I was forced down onto the floor of the wing so the nurse could come and administer the ever popular needle of Ativan into my ass cheek. I continued to try and fight, until a rather large fellow named Abdullah decided the best way to keep me down would to be to use his knee to pin my head to the rug."

Tales of New Hotspots, Services

Tales of New Hotspots, Services 03/08/2004 11:15 PM
Wayport is just one of a handful of companies announcing new places to find hotspots over the last week: Visitors to San Francisco's Moscone Center will be able to get access from Wayport in common areas and meeting rooms by the spring. Most of the conference center will be covered by then with the rest coming later. A slightly different clientele will likely be using a new hotspot in Philadelphia. The mayor announced that the city will set up a hotspot in Love Park. Apparently the park used to be filled with skateboarders who were recently banned from using the park. But a compromise is being worked on that will allow skateboarders during certain hours. They'll now be able to tote their laptops to the park as well. In other city hotspot news, San Jose is planning a big bash Thursday, March 11 at 11:00 at the Circle of Palms to celebrate San Jose's downtown Wi-Fi service. The mayor and members of the Silicon Valley Wireless Communications Alliance will be there. Demonstrations of the service will be available and the new Downtown Wi-Fi portal will be launched. Finally, for those iPass customers who have been waiting for the iPass/T-Mobile agreement to come to fruition, the wait is over. Starting today, iPass users will see 4,200 T-Mobile hotspots in the iPass directory of available access sites. IPass customers can also find more information about those and all iPass broadband access sites now that iPass has licensed a directory tool from JiWire. IPass customers will be able to view maps of where the hotspots are and read detailed information about the venues that offer the hotspots. The tool includes information about all iPass broadband locations, wired or wireless, around the globe. JiWire is a Wi-Fi Networking News partner. The announcement about the T-Mobile sites isn't available online and JiWire doesn't seem to have posted its news release on its site yet....

Alien Planets Tell Tales With Colors

Alien Planets Tell Tales With Colors 03/23/2005 07:57 PM

Two teams of Astronomers this week discovered the color of two planets by using infrared radiation. This break-through will allow experts to discover what the planet’s surface or atmosphere are made of. This is a major finding. According to Astronomy Magazine,
Planet's Color

Charbonneau's group used the Spitzer Space Telescope's Infrared Array Camera to home in on the light from TrES-1, a "hot Jupiter" zipping around a Sun-like star about 500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Lyra. The astronomers tracked the intensity of two infrared "colors" as the planet passed behind its star, an event called secondary eclipse. The team subtracted the star's radiation from the total seen when the planet was not eclipsed by the star. Measuring the gas giant's infrared radiation allowed the team to calculate its temperature — a sizzling 1,450° F (1,060 kelvins). Charbonneau suspects his group has also found the spectral fingerprint of carbon monoxide in the planet's atmosphere, but, he says, "We're going to go back and get more data."

1 Million Free Songs for Download

1 Million Free Songs for Download 07/29/2004 03:28 PM

In my experience, most of the RIAA-hating nerds who swear they'll never to buy another album again continue to download copyrighted, RIAA-financed music from less-than-legal sources (and I've done it, too, so simmer down). What's crazy, though, is that if you really don't want to bend any laws, there is a wealth of free music online -- and The Red Ferret Journal just set up a Wiki (a user-edited web page) to make it even easier. There are hundreds of thousands of freely downloadable songs on the websites listed (some of them are even not techno) and thousands more non-RIAA-backed labels selling songs, too -- so if you really want to fill up that iPod without "stealing music," you do have an option to do so.

Mainly, though, I just wanted you to feel extra guilty when you download RIAA music anyway.

Stross's magnificent ACCELERANDO as a
free CC download
06/17/2005 03:35 PM
Cory Doctorow: Charlie Stross's brilliant novel Accelerando is available as a free Creative Commons download! This novel collects and bridges all of his Hugo-nominated Manfred Macx stories, published over the last several years in Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine. Charlie is a wild talent, and he writes like the love-child of Vernor Vinge, Neal Stephenson and Hunter S Thompson. Once you start this book, you won't be able to stop.
Manfred's on the road again, making strangers rich.

It's a hot summer Tuesday, and he's standing in the plaza in front of the Centraal Station with his eyeballs powered up and the sunlight jangling off the canal, motor scooters and kamikaze cyclists whizzing past and tourists chattering on every side. The square smells of water and dirt and hot metal and the fart-laden exhaust fumes of cold catalytic converters; the bells of trams ding in the background, and birds flock overhead. He glances up and grabs a pigeon, crops the shot, and squirts it at his weblog to show he's arrived. The bandwidth is good here, he realizes; and it's not just the bandwidth, it's the whole scene. Amsterdam is making him feel wanted already, even though he's fresh off the train from Schiphol: He's infected with the dynamic optimism of another time zone, another city. If the mood holds, someone out there is going to become very rich indeed.

He wonders who it's going to be.

* * *

Manfred sits on a stool out in the car park at the Brouwerij 't IJ, watching the articulated buses go by and drinking a third of a liter of lip-curlingly sour gueuze. His channels are jabbering away in a corner of his head-up display, throwing compressed infobursts of filtered press releases at him. They compete for his attention, bickering and rudely waving in front of the scenery. A couple of punks – maybe local, but more likely drifters lured to Amsterdam by the magnetic field of tolerance the Dutch beam across Europe like a pulsar – are laughing and chatting by a couple of battered mopeds in the far corner. A tourist boat putters by in the canal; the sails of the huge windmill overhead cast long, cool shadows across the road. The windmill is a machine for lifting water, turning wind power into dry land: trading energy for space, sixteenth-century style. Manfred is waiting for an invite to a party where he's going to meet a man he can talk to about trading energy for space, twenty-first-century style, and forget about his personal problems.

He's ignoring the instant messenger boxes, enjoying some low-bandwidth, high-sensation time with his beer and the pigeons, when a woman walks up to him, and says his name: "Manfred Macx?"

He glances up. The courier is an Effective Cyclist, all wind-burned smooth-running muscles clad in a paean to polymer technology: electric blue lycra and wasp yellow carbonate with a light speckling of anti collision LEDs and tight-packed air bags. She holds out a box for him. He pauses a moment, struck by the degree to which she resembles Pam, his ex-fiance.
