Independent Developers Fight Piracy &
Lose
09/14/2004 09:28 AM

Slashdot discusses how piracy is hurting shareware authors. The discussion links to an article from a Mac shareware author who fears that piracy will force him to shut down his business, and it mentions another developer who resorted to having his software delete the user's home directory when it detected a hacked serial number.

Independent ISPs Team Up To Fight For
Open Access
04/15/2004 02:23 PM
Finally realizing that having each independent ISP argue the point separately and hoping that it all worked out, a group of such ISPs are banding together to fight for open access to cable broadband lines. The FCC has been pretty clear in not opening up access to the cable lines, though they've looked vulnerable in court lately. The entire "open access" debate is only going to get much, much messier before it's settled - which isn't really good for anyone. In the meantime, though, over in the DSL world, Qwest and Covad have signed a line-sharing deal - showing that private deals can happen without regulation.

Multinational pharma companies are patenting the traditional medecine of indigineous people. Now activists have created a prior-art website to foil these acts of "bio-piracy."
They hope that the Tekpad (Traditional Ecological Knowledge Prior Art Database) website will go some way to redress this bio-piracy by offering US and European patent offices a comprehensive list of traditional remedies that are already in the public domain...

"The website is a way of fighting bio-piracy which is the misuse of biological resources and knowledge," Project Director Stephen Hansen explained to the BBC's Go Digital programme.

Actual piracy is on the rise. That is to say, more people are boarding more ships with more guns and shooting more people and taking more cargo, all the while uttering more horrible cries of "ARRRRR."

Strangely, the shipping industry's response isn't to keelhaul passengers who don't tip well on ocean cruises, or to hull random pleasure boats, or to demand special bow-mounted lasers that vaporize any ship that gets within a hundred miles.

Around the world, more than 20 sailors are known to have been murdered by pirates last year.

Seventy are missing, presumed dead.

Other trends are also emerging: ships are now less likely to be hijacked for their cargo; attackers, possibly from militant groups, are seizing ships and ransoming their crew.

"Independent" Film. What is it?

"Independent" Film. What is it? 04/15/2005 06:29 PM
I don't know what "independent film" means. At a time when the W einsteins are trying to extricate themselves from Disney, it seems an appropriate question to ask. There are Indie films (non-industry money) that are supposed to imitate fancy hollywood films, there are new studios being opened outside of LA by Wealthy Christians in Denver hoping to convert through CS Lewis movies and there are Garden State, Lost in Translation, Eternal Sunshine etc. which are like other Hollywood films: have stars, and studio money but are marketed as "Independent Films." What makes these independent? Finally, and seemingly too infrequently, there are privately financed and self-distributed unusual films like Assisted Living which despite their obvious merits and the critic's< /a> adoration are presumably ignored by the studios, blasted by the brain-numbing EW and distributed instead by the two young first-time filmmakers Why can't we see more non-hollywood and non-hollywood espousing independent ART on the screen? Why do we let every other multi-million dollar romantic comedy be sold to us as "indy" just because it has a quirky soundtrack or aesthetic sensibility. What can we do about it? I'm going to the movies. You?
