Notebooks Tempt as Prices Drop

Notebooks Tempt as Prices Drop 08/02/2004 04:29 AM
Not long ago, notebook computers were expensive accessories for traveling executives. Now, it's not a surprise to find many choices priced under $1000. A recent check of Web stores found major vendors offering notebooks on the cheap (aka "inexpensive," as the companies that sell them would prefer). IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Dell are all offering portable models for under $750.

Forrester Research analyst Simon Yates isn't surprised. "Notebooks between $800 and $1000 are becoming prevalent," he says, which makes the $750 price not entirely out of line. Yates sees this as "the result of a willingness--or lack thereof--[by consumers] to pay more than $1200 for a PC." If you really hunt for bargains, they can get even better. Last year, Gartner Group analyst Martin Reynolds bought a new notebook for his father that, after rebates, cost less than $500.

06/22/2004 03:43 PM
Gaming console vendors need broadband providers and television manufacturers to lower prices on their products to help gaming grow on the Internet, said Kazuo Hirai, president and chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. Hirai, speaking at a Congressional Internet Caucus event in Washington, D.C., Tuesday, called on broadband providers to reduce prices as a way to drive more U.S. residents to broadband and drive more interest in console gaming through the Internet. Television manufacturers can help spur interest in console gaming, he added, by pricing high-definition television (HDTV) sets in a range that's affordable for average U.S. residents.

MacCentral: Sony gaming exec: Broadband prices need to drop. "With the average monthly cost of broadband, about US$40, a customer could buy a new PlayStation 2 game every month." Translation: Stop competing with us for the public's disposable income. Please make less money so we can make more money. "Future versions of gaming consoles will be able to provide HDTV-ready games." This seems to confirm my hunch that the PS3 will have HD resolution. If it can play high definition Blu-ray movies, people will sort of expect the games to be HD, too.

Cell Carriers Quietly Drop Data Plan
Prices
04/23/2004 09:52 PM
The Feature notes that cell data prices have dropped, quietly: A few weeks ago, it was $80 per month for unlimited data from those who offered unlimited plans, with lower fees only for metered services. Cingular offered no unlimited service. In the face of faster national networks and Verizon Wireless's commitment coupled with T-Mobile ($20/month) and Sprint PCS ($15/month) pricing, The Feature's Eric Lin notes a host of small changes. Verizon Wireless is now down to $50/month for 1xRTT, but still charges $80/month for PC Card-based 1xEvDO. Cingular plummeted its GRPS and limited EDGE to $20 per month (but it's not listed as such on their site yet). AT&T Wireless is offering GPRS/EDGE at $45/month. To quote Mike Masnick of TechDirt, So, now it seems that the entry point for the highest speed is $80, then you drop to $50 when there's a bit of competition, and down to about $20 when your service doesn't have much to distinguish itself any more....
