How Bad Is Plagiarism At Universities?
How Bad Is Plagiarism At Universities?
06/30/2004 09:07 PMWhen you have students
suing
universities when caught plagiarizing you know that plagiarism
isn't always frowned upon by students. However, despite the scary
language used in this article, the numbers really don't seem that
ridiculous. About twenty-five percent of students
admit to
plagiarizing at some point or another (though, the article
describes this as "cheating his or her way through degrees").
Meanwhile, 97% say they know its cheating, but 17% still think it's
okay anyway. Now, it's obviously cheating, but to be honest, these
numbers don't see all that high or surprising. There are always going
to be students who cheat at one point or another. While the article
includes anecdotal stories about students who have copied material
repeatedly, the study doesn't actually address how many students
chronically cheat, and how many have just done it on occasion. I'm
not defending those who do it, but the article uses language that
would make you think that no one ever writes their own work any more,
and the numbers in the study simply don't support that.

Is
plagiarism at universities out of control? Academic
Plagiarism is a growing problem in the university world and is not
just
making headlines in the United States anymore. While some
professors are
morally
opposed, the growing popularity of professors forcing students to
submit works ahead of time to companies like
Turnitin may be an indicator of of
this growing problem. With
more and more employers complaining about the writing
skills of new hires, are we just
cheating
ourselves in the end?

03/29/2005 03:07 PMCory Doctorow:
Nate Kushner was sitting around one night when he started to get IMs
from a college student who was looking to commission a term-paper on
Hinduism that was due in the morning. She'd seen something about
Hinduism in Nate's AIM profile and so she offered him $75 to write the
paper. He wrote a silly little paper, strung her along, pranked her,
and then published the whole thing along with her real name on his
blog:
Laura K. Pahl: lets talk about it then
Nate Kushner: As long as you understand that plagiarism is not going
to free you from the painful cycle of death and rebirth any
quicker.
Laura K. Pahl: ok

College To Do Away With Fair Use
College To Do Away With Fair Use
12/17/2003 09:34 PMThe latest silliness from our college campuses is this bit of news
from Ithaca College, where they're planning to tell professors that
fair use no longer exists when it comes to course packs
(the photocopied excerpts from various sources that many professors
use to give students short excerpts from a variety of sources). While
most such course packs do involve some approved material, much of it
is often used on a fair-use basis - but university administrators are
afraid of getting sued. Thus, they're going to tell professors that
they need to license every last bit of content they use. This means
that (a) professors will ditch a lot of materials, because they don't
have time to get approval from everyone or because the publisher wants
too much money to include a single paragraph and (b) the course packs
will be much more expensive with less useful stuff for students. In
some cases, professors will simply put the materials on library loan,
where students will go and photocopy it anyway - basically adding an
"annoyance" factor to the process. It's a great lesson we're teaching
the students of today when they don't get to read certain materials
because it's just too damn expensive.

As you can see from his expression he was really excited about

Question two: “Dr. Laura over the past couple of years said that gay
people are biological errors. You talked before about decisive
programming (i.e. Stern), I wonder what XM’s position is on hate
speech was and if you condone it. And why would you associate yourself
with her after you said you wouldn’t associate with Howard Stern
because of controversy issues. Are you going to lose subscribers, and
do you feel gay people are biological errors?”

Laura Thomson's Blog: Simple Things are
Beautiful (REST and PHP)
06/17/2005 03:32 PMOn
Laura Thomson's blog, there's
this post that talks a bit about XML and web services.
In a nutshell: most of the web services stack is bloatware that
doesn't get used for most applications. 90% of the time you can get
away with knowing no SOAP, WSDL, or any of that stuff. You can just
use REST - Representational State Transfer. This is basically an HTTP
GET request with parameters, and in return you get an XML document, in
other words XML over HTTP. It works very nicely and is simple.
She gives a basic example of how, using nothing more than
SimpleXML in PHP5, you can create a client/server with REST to
communicated back and forth.
I'm not saying there isn't a need for SOAP and WS-*, just that often
simple tools will do the job. It's just another version of the 80%
rule. This seems to be a theme in my personal consumption of
technology.
