More Secret Santa poetry...

More Secret Santa poetry... 11/13/2003 05:24 AM

Weblogger south, Weblogger north!
Come hear my tale of Christmas glee...
Which this year shall be much in rhyme
(I'm sorry and please bear with me...)

A mount so high it touches space;
Within: a massive darkened cave,
Wherein a sharp and pointy race
Of tiny elves has been enslaved...

And in the centre, Mrs Claus -
A tower of computer might
(And built for no apparent cause)
Stands passive in the candlelight.

Beside her there's a silhouette
A disconnected robot form
Who waits each year for holidays
The chance to serve and be reborn.

But then, what's this? The Yule alarm!?
A klaxxon sounds throughout the lair
And with a twitch, the robot's arm
Thrusts holly fistfuls in the air!

He stands, a monster, next the flames
That every year before hath burned.
And lo! His robot voice proclaims
That SECRET SANTA HAS RETURNED!

Secret Santa 2003 is launched...

Secret Santa 2003 is launched... 11/12/2003 01:19 PM

So Secret Santa 2003 has launched. For those of you who are newbies, the point remains the same - you give us details of your site and your wishlist and then on December the 10th we send them out to another person elsewhere on the web who buys you a present. You get someone else's details and buy them a present. Everyone gets a present! Everyone's happy!

This is Santa's third year, and Cal, Denise an I are back to serving just the weblogging / personal publishing community. It's only right and proper given that's the community that we're part of and care most about. And Secret Santa has generally been a tremendous success. Over the last two years over 1,000 presents were sent out to people, promoting peace love and general loveliness all over the world - from Japan to Germany!

This year the one most obvious difference is that I've rewritten the copy so that the vast majority of it is now in bad poetry. I'd like to apologise to you all for this straightaway, particularly to the UI, usability and editorial professionals out there who probably won't appreciate how hard it is to put clear instructions into groups of rhyming eight-syllable sentences and will just concentrate on the "It's not very good" aspect of the whole enterprise...

We may soon know the identity of Deep Throat. It seems that Bob Woodward has penned the obituary of the elusive Deep Throat. There have been no lack of theories for who might actually be Deep Throat. And of course, any political conspiracy theory secret wouldn't be any fun without tying it back to Bush somehow.

What is the current state of American poetry? Hank Lazer: Perhaps, contrary to the laments, we are now living through a particularly rich time in American poetry—an era of radically democratized poetry...In its anarchic democratic disorganized decentralization, poetry culture has developed in a manner parallel to the computer: the decentralized PC has beaten the main-frame. No one can pretend to know what is out there, or what is next. Who are some of the most notable American poets active in the beginning of the 21st century?

Slam poetry for CC remix 07/23/2004 04:46 AM
Wayne Mercier is a Vancouver slam poet who has just released his first book of poetry published, and along with it, a CD of him reading his work. He's made the entire audio of the CD available for downloand and remix under a Creative Commons license.
I'm really excited about this, not just because it's a way of getting my stuff out into the world, but because - to my knowledge - this is the first time this has been done in Canadian poetry. Coach House Press releases electronic editions of their author's work but retains copyright. Also the fact that this is audio, and thus open to extensive remixing and incorporation into larger, multimedia projects, is very cool.

Xeni on NPR: Cheeseball pop love songs
are poetry, too.
02/13/2004 01:18 PM
On today's edition of the NPR program "Day to Day," I interview a University of Pennsylvania writing instructor who is teaching her students the common literary elements found in simple pop songs from the '70s and '80s, classic love poems, and sonnets. Her course is called "Hit Me Baby One More Time -- The Erotic Lyric Tradition", and uses two recently-published compilations of uber-schlocky pop song lyrics: I Can't Fight This Feeling (love songs), and You Give Love a Bad Name (breakup songs).

Listen to the archived audio segment after 12PM PT, and hear what may well be the most hilarious 30 seconds in NPR history: award-winning news man Carl Kassel performing a reading of the Pat Benatar classic "Love is a Battlefield." Who loves you, baby? Link to archived audio (Real and WM), available after 12PM PT.

Los Angeles Times - We are victims of anxious advertising executives and publicity-hungry politicians. Desperate to sell their messages quickly, they repeatedly load their slogans with words whose first sound repeats. They do this crudely and self-consciously, these villains, cheapening a subtly beautiful literary technique.

WPA's Little Secret

WPA's Little Secret 11/04/2003 02:32 PM
Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) has a weakness: poorly chosen short human-readable passphrases can be cracked with a robust dictionary attack offline and without access to the network: Robert Moskowitz, the senior techncial director of TruSecure Corp.'s ICSA Labs, has given me permission to post this paper he has written that describes a weakness in the interface design for WPA-equipped access points and adapters. Robert's paper is rather technical and specific, but I can summarize: Short, text-based WPA keys can be broken through no fault in the WPA protocol. The longer summary: If you use the standard interface for WPA key entry and provide a text passphrase that uses words found in dictionaries of fewer than 20 characters, a cracker passively intercepting initial key exchange messages can employ an offline dictionary attack and extract the encryption key, gaining access to the network. Key exchange messages occur at the beginning of a connection between an adapter (station) and an access point; that exchange can be forced to repeat by a cracker sending a disassociate message which forces a new exchange within about 30 seconds. So a cracker can be on and off the network in a couple of minutes with the information they need. This is actually much worse than WEP, but easily solved. Robert points out that dictionary-based cracking programs abound, and that little modification would be needed to turn one of those into a weak-WPA-key attack. The fundamentals of WPA remain intact; this is technically an interface problem given that manufacturers know -- as he points out in his paper -- that users won't enter long keys. Microsoft solved this problem with their 128-bit WEP solution for their broadband gateway by writing the key to a floppy disk after it was generated, allowing users to walk the key from machine to machine. It should be made clear that WEP's flaw were deep within: WEP can be cracked regardless of how good your key selection is or how long the key. With WPA, the length of the passphrase and its quality has a direct relationship to its integrity. The problem Robert describes isn't unknown; he's just isolated and expanded on it. The solution is also quite simple: choose a key of at least 96 bits or a passphrase that includes gibberish that's more than 20 characters long. So far, of all the WPA interfaces that I've seen, only Apple's allows you...
