Technology
04/01/2005 06:55 AMOpera Software's R&D department today announced the discovery of a
new technology dubbed 'Opera SoundWave' - a platform-independent
speech solution for short- and medium-range interpersonal
communication. Based on open standards, Opera's patent-pending P2P
speech technology uses analogue signals carried through open air,
enabling users to communicate in real-time without the use of
computers or mobile phones.
Opera is spearheading the development to let people communicate
without using a keyboard, and the new SoundWave technology was
accidently discovered during an R&D study to speech-enable Opera's
e-mail client. One of Opera's desktop developers needed to find an
alternative way to relay a message to his colleague at a time when the
e-mail server was down, and was startled to notice that his verbal
outcry was intercepted and understood immediately.

Right Wing's Attacks on Science
Jeopardize More than Scholarship
Right Wing's Attacks on Science
Jeopardize More than Scholarship
03/06/2004 01:58 AMRobert F. Kennedy Jr.:
The
Junk Science of George W. Bush.
Today, flat-earthers within the
Bush Administration--aided by right-wing allies who have produced
assorted hired guns and conservative think tanks to further their
goals--are engaged in a campaign to suppress science that is arguably
unmatched in the Western world since the Inquisition. Sometimes,
rather than suppress good science, they simply order up their own.
Meanwhile, the Bush White House is purging, censoring and blacklisting
scientists and engineers whose work threatens the profits of the
Administration's corporate paymasters or challenges the ideological
underpinnings of their radical anti-environmental agenda. Indeed, so
extreme is this campaign that more than sixty scientists, including
Nobel laureates and medical experts, released a statement on February
18 that accuses the Bush Administration of deliberately distorting
scientific fact "for partisan political ends."Google Offering Anita Borg Scholarship

Scholarship, teaching, new media, and
copyright conference
06/17/2004 11:28 AM
The
Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania is holding a conference this weekend on the growing copyright
problems facing scholars using digital media. "Knowledge Held Hostage:
Scholarly Versus Corporate Rights in the Digital Age" examines
the
overlap of creative use of technology with (often inadvertent)
copyright infringement.
Questions to be addressed include the following:
What justifies fair use in a scholarly context?
Is there a viable alternative to fair use in the
academic environment?
What are the fair use issues and needs raised by different scholarly
media (for example, print, film, digital media, databases)?
Do different kinds of institutional arrangements
(large vs. small school vs. professional society, classroom vs.
library) raise different fair use issues and needs?
The event is also
sponsored by Rice University 's
Connexions project
.

Korean Archery
08/22/2004 09:18 PM
South Korea's continuing dominance in archery is amazing but, like
the effect of monopoly
on economy, I think overdominance is starting to hurt
international archery competitions.
IMHO, countries overdominating a field of sports should share
it's knowhows and
training programs with rest of the world, particularly with
those countries that
never had a chance to win an olympic medal. For example,
South Korean archery
association should offer archery scholarships for amateur archers
from third-world
countries. I am sure Korean companies like Samsung and LG
will be glad to sponsor
such scholarship programs.
Imagine the joy everyone will feel when those athletes win their
countries' first
olympic medal. I also think such programs are far more
rewarding than traditional
international aids and foreign relation efforts.

First Day of Junior High
09/01/2004 11:27 AM
I pulled another all nighter, but I couldn't go to sleep this
morning because today
is a special day for my son.He just left on a bus to go to his
junior
highschool (6th grade, wow...almost a man). It was his first
ride on regular
bus and alone at that. This morning he barely ate breakfast
because he was excited
as well as nervous. I thought I should just pretend today
wasn't special so
I was in bed when he left our house. I didn't last more than
a few minutes.
I grabbed my camera and ran out after him.
My son riding samTrans to junior high
Since I haven't posted much pictures lately, how about a couple
more?
Happy to be buried alive!
Above was taken just a stone throw from our campsite at Lake
Tahoe. Camping
and hanging out at the beach at the same time is the best kind of
camping.
Neighborhood racoon after tasting our grapes
I was working at night when I heard a loud noise outside.
When I looked out,
I saw this racoon going through our small patch of
grapevines. It sat on the
wooden support and ate all the grapes, one by one, while I was
staring at it.
Racoons must have special kind of nerves. Above shot was
taken when it got up
to leave. So long and thanks for all the grapes, it
seemed to be saying.
Next year, I know what it will be saying, Hmm. These
grapes taste different
from last year. How do I know? Because I'll be
marking my grapes the
same way as dogs do with fire hydrants. Hah!

Junior Jobs
Junior Jobs
09/02/2004 12:19 PM(No, this isn't a duplicate of the previous story — different
sort of Jobs).
The KDE project has come up with a neat way to get new developers
interested in contributing to KDE: Junior
Jobs. The problem with starting to contribute to a big project
like KDE is that the code is so large and confusing, a new developer
won't know how or where to begin
So the KDE developers are marking certain 'easy' feature requests
as 'Junior Jobs', and including some hints, so that those problems
could be picked up by a developer who's never written any code for the
project.
As Christian puts it: "I started to mark some bugs as JJ
some months ago. Now I already received three high-quality patches
from two different people (Thanks Sergio and Dermot!) for those
reports. That's much more than I expected."
With some success under their belts, it's likely that a Junior Jobs
programmer will go on to contribute more to the project. Neat idea.

iPod Junior
iPod Junior
01/05/2004 09:49 AMOne of the most enduring Apple-related rumours over the holiday season
was that of a mini iPod. Smaller in capacity and size than the
standard iPod and available in a range of colours, it would cost less
than 100.
This makes perfect sense to me, the iPod has all but cleaned up, but
with an entry level price of 250, it's still a bit pricey for a lot of
people (though this hasn't stopped them selling shed-loads of them
over Christmas).

What's wrong with a Discman or a Walkperson? It's just a

indie schmindie stuff they think they should listen to, a rock
critic's wishlist of songs. They think it offers limitless potential,
