SQL Server Data Mining Programmability
SQL Server Data Mining Programmability
04/14/2005 01:40 AMWith Microsoft SQL Server 2005, the collection of statistics
techniques and machine learning algorithms generically known as data
mining is brought up to a new level. The most important change is
that, in SQL Server 2005, data mining changes its target audience.
Besides being a scientific lab instrument, addressing a limited number
of highly skilled individuals, SQL Server Data Mining now gains
ubiquity as a handy tool for developers, ready to be used in a wide
range of applications. Most applications, from spreadsheets to
Internet games, from peer-to-peer communication systems to application
servers, share one common characteristic: they have to process data.
In doing this, they use certain standard APIs for accessing data. With
SQL Server 2005 Data Mining, the same kind of APIs can be used to
embed machine intelligence in the data processing systems.

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (64-bit):
Intel Itanium Processor Touchstone
12/25/2003 11:25 PMIn the four years since the first public demonstration of 64-bit
Windows in 1999, the OS has been fully ported and now runs native
Itanium instructions for both the kernel and supporting processes. The
LLP64 Windows pointer model (int and long remain 32 bits wide, "long
long" and pointers are defined as 64 bits wide) provided for minimal
code changes during the port. With the exception of architectural
specific design in the kernel (some examples in table below), 32-bit
and 64-bit Windows share common source code. For example, the Windows
user interface remains the same. All the familiar Windows tools from
Microsoft Notepad to Microsoft Internet Explorer can be produced in
32-bit or 64-bit images. The same holds true for application
development: 32-bit code and 64-bit code can share common source.

Searching for Algorithms and Data
Structures
05/05/2004 02:36 AM
In the old days, finding obscure algorithms and data structures
meant keeping stacks
of books and trade journals in the garage, visiting book stores and
local universities
to dig through mountains of books and badly written and copied
research papers.
Even in the Bay Area where there are great bookstores and two large
universities,
it wasn't easy. Whenever I read about something neat like
Linda or spiral hashing,
I drove over to the Stanford math & CS library and spent hours
going through papers.
Finding the paper often mean having to read papers mentioned in the
paper so it was a
good way to waste a whole day in that dusty library.
Thanks the Net, all that is replaced by Google and excellent
services like CiteSeer and NIST
WebSpace. NIST
Dictionary of Algorithms
and Data Structures is useful too, although it's not as
complete as I would like.
Unfortunately, most of these services are not updating their stat
pages as often as
I would like. For example, this list of most-accessed
documents at CiteSeer was last updated in June 2003.
I wish these valuable services had easy ways to donate (PayPal?)
because I think they
are absolutely essential to my work and I want them to improve and
expand their services.
For example, wouldn't it be great if documents at CiteSeer were
Wiki pages?
This way, corrections to errors in the papers and implementations
can be shared.

09/20/2004 03:12 PMFor most companies, data backup and recovery is a significantly more
pressing issue now than it was just a few years ago. A challenging
economic climate, new regulatory mandates, and a greater concern about
risks from major disasters, among other factors, are fueling this
concern. Fortunately, rapidly declining disk prices are allowing
enterprises to augment their data-protection strategies using
disk-based backup and recovery technologies, which enable a faster,
more manageable and more reliable solution than traditional
tape-backup technology. But most of the current disk-based solutions
on the market are still cost-prohibitive for many companies,
especially small and medium-sized businesses.

Small Business Server 2003
04/16/2004 01:01 PMTo upgrade to Microsoft® Windows® Small Business Server 2003 from
Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 or Windows 2000 Server, you must
perform a server migration. A server migration includes installing
Windows Small Business Server 2003 on a new computer, and then
migrating data and settings. You can complete a server migration to
either a retail installation of Windows Small Business Server 2003 or
to a computer purchased from an original equipment manufacturer (OEM)
that was preinstalled with Windows Small Business Server 2003.
