features, plan
04/22/2004 12:04 PM
Microsoft Corp. on Wednesday said it would roll out a number of new features, like the ability to leave voice messages, for its Xbox Live online video game service and also release a new three-month Live subscription plan. Microsoft said that after a period of downtime of up to 24 hours that started Wednesday morning, players would be able to take advantages of features like voice messaging when sending other people invitations to play games. The upgrades will also enable services, once game publishers build them into new games, like team-building, custom competitions and sharing of custom-designed game content among players.

Matrix online game hires real actors to

Matrix online game hires real actors to
play in-game characters
03/25/2005 06:33 AM
Cory Doctorow: The Matrix Online (a massively multiplayer online game based on the Matrix franchise) has hired a troupe of 20 actors to hang around in game and in character, advancing the story and generally making it all seem more disbelief-suspendingly real.
Since the close of the beta, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that it has employed a troupe of 20-odd people whose job it will be to enact narrative scenarios in The Matrix Online live. These people will assume the roles of popular characters, interact with players, and generally move the stories in ways that only live "actors" can. And though it appears that the story hasn't officially commenced, a few players on the Method server were treated to a pretty slick sample of it this afternoon: an extended pep-talk by none other than Morpheus himself. (See the screenshots for proof.) But this is an Out of the Box report, so here are our first impressions of the game so far.

Videogames Receives NASA Space Act
Agreement To Develop Space Station Game
05/31/2004 01:55 PM
Vision Videogames of Towson, Maryland received a Space Act Agreement from The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) earlier this month to develop their PC/PS2/Xbox game, Space Station:SIM, due for consumer release this Christmas season. The Space Act Agreement is a continuation of one received by GRS Games before Vision Videogames management bought out the company in March 2004. It allows Vision Videogames a flow of information from, and access to, NASA personnel so the company can gather information to build their game. “The game has captured everyone’s imagination. We have individuals and international agencies including JAXA (The Japanese Space Agency) volunteering to help us with drawings, science, music – anything you can imagine,” says company president Bill Mueller. In Space Station:SIM, the player assumes the roll of the Chief Administrator of NASA, creating astronaut crewmembers with unique needs, abilities and personalities while managing their activities and personal relationships like “The SIMS®”. VoIP - Plan A vs Plan B

VoIP - Plan A vs Plan B 03/06/2004 01:56 AM
2003 was a remarkable year in the US for voice over the internet (VoIP). If you needed a label for the events of the year, "Collapse of Denial" would be a good one -- after a long period of relative inaction, the FCC and the state regulators are suddenly pushing hard for a regulatory framework. The question is no longer whether voice is going to become an internet application, but when. "When" could still be a very long time, however. The incumbent local phone companies -- Verizon, SBC, BellSouth and Qwest -- have various degrees of interest in VoIP, but are loathe to embrace it quickly or completely, because doing so means admitting to everyone -- shareholders, regulators, customers -- that both monopoly control and artificially high voice revenues are going away. (The fact that this is true does not much lessen the pain of saying so.) As a result, they will likely try to convince regulatory agencies, both the FCC and the states', to burden competitive VoIP firms like Vonage with additional costs and rules, while delaying their own offerings. Complicating this de facto Plan A, however, is the fact that VoIP isn't a service, it's just a set of protocols, meaning that competitors don't have to buy into Plan A to deploy it. If Plan A is "Replace the phone system slowly and from within," Plan B is far more radical: "Replace the phone system. Period." - More at http://www.shirky.com/writings/voip_a_b.txt

Forget Be In The Game, How About Let The
Game Be In You?
04/07/2005 03:22 PM
It appears that Sony has now patented the concept of beaming sensory info directly into your brain without requiring any kind of invasive surgery or anything (phew!). They claim it could be used in video games either to add in sensory info like smell and taste, but also to provide richer gaming experiences for deaf and blind people. While there is something both fascinating and creepy about this idea, it seems like the sort of thing that would have plenty of uses outside of the video game world -- and those might be a bit more impressive than just letting people really jack into a game. Anyway, since patents don't actually have to be based on something that actually works, this idea is... well... mostly just in someone's brain.

Plan B

Plan B 07/14/2004 10:39 PM
Okay, trusting that Leo's right and the python engine's good about not leaving things on the stack at label boundaries, I've reworked the architecture of the translator program. A new version's up, and I'll explain later. (Though it's probably reasonably obvious what it does) It won't run, but adding in new python bytecode processing ops is trivial and, happily, diff/patch able. (nudge, nudge :) I fully expect to be poking at this as I go along, but feel free to do so too....
