Gartner: Ignore Standards for Web

Gartner: Ignore Standards for Web
Services Security.
11/13/2003 07:42 PM"Gartner advises firms to rely on vendor-provided technology to
provide security for web services-based transactions until 2006, even
though it may not comply with standards."
But IMO, the decision isn't that straightforward. After all, look at
Google and Amazon.com, both of whom offer web services which cross
organizational boundaries and use relatively little security. Okay, so
these aren't business-process web services, but my point is that there
are many classes of web services that can be deployed today without
the need for complex proprietary security solutions. At the same time,
I have to say that the Gartner report is probably about right, that it
will be 2-3 years until one can find a fully standardized security
stack based on WS-Security and its add-ons that is sufficient to
support complex web services which cross security domains. [Source:

In an amazing bit of promotion for iRobot (the
company, not the travesty), one of the new Roomba Discoveries has
written a comparison review for San Diego Source, putting an
Electrolux Trilobite and columnist Phil Baker in an head-to-head
deathmatch to answer the home automation question of our time: Can an
$1,800 euro-robot clean floors more effectively than a technology
columnist? Surprisingly, while Phil Baker is almost $1,500 cheaper
than the Trilobite (at $250), his performance stands up fairly
compared to the more expensive model, although he does have a tendency
to leak some dust out of his waste pan when picked up. Score one for
the journos!

Didion on George W. Bush: the NYRB is 40
10/28/2003 11:08 PM It seems slightly scandalous that Krugman has persisted in
noting that the present administration has been moving the lion's
share of the money to an array of corporate interests distinguished by
the greed of their CEOs, an indifference toward their workers, and
boardroom conviction that it is the welfare state that is ruining the
country. Krugman has been strident. He has been shrill. He has lowered
the dignity of the commentariat. How refreshing. Russell

04/09/2004 04:13 PMSo, my site is on the new LISHost server, just in time to sit
idle for a while. I'm heading off to a much anticipated vacation, sans
laptop, so things will be even quieter around here than they have been
lately (at least until the 19th, maybe later). Please also note that I
won't be reading any news during that time, and I'm already so far
behind in my email it's no longer a joke, so responses will be delayed
even longer than usual. Sorry, but it's vacation, don't you know.
One last pointer that I've been quite remiss in posting until now.

them, as well as to all of the folks included on this year's list! I'm
looking forward to reading through all of the write-ups and learning
lots of great new things!
