I just bought a Mac

I just bought a Mac 09/26/2004 05:22 AM

That's right, I bought a Mac. A cheap iBook, to be exact. I'm not planning to write software for the Mac, but I do want to keep up with the goings-on in the Mac world, and I could also learn a lot from the Mac UI. See, there's one thing that Apple consistently gets right that Microsoft consistently gets wrong: style.

After working with OS-X for a few hours, switching back to Windows is like partying with Charlize Theron then coming home to Kathy Bates. Sure, Kathy Bates is exceptionally talented, but sometimes a little glamour is exciting.

LiveJournal Bought Out

LiveJournal Bought Out 01/06/2005 09:19 AM
LiveJournal, the blogging site, has been bought up by Six Apart, the company behind the MovableType weblog software. The buy-out will see staff working with Danga, the company which previously owned LiveJournal, move to San Francisco to work with the new owners.

LiveJournal's creator, Brad Fitzpatrick, said the move will mean "nothing earth-shattering" for the existing service. However, users are to get access to trackback for the first time. "They're not buying the site to spam you, screw you, destroy the community, or convert you en masse to their other paid services," Fitzpatrick said. "They just want to double our efforts and have a part in all types of blogging. "

Six Apart CEO, Barak Berkowitz, added: "We are now the only company to offer the full range of weblogging tools to the market," he said. "We welcome LiveJournal users to the Six Apart family, and promise to keep the LiveJournal culture and quality which has earned their devotion."

Fitzpatrick promised development of LiveJournal will continue after the move; prices would not rise and free accounts would not be scrapped, he said. Since it started up five years ago, LiveJournal has built up a community of over five million users - it currently claims to have just short of 2.5 million actively-updated blogs on its servers.

Bought a G5 right before the update? 11/25/2003 10:22 PM
If you purchased a G5 right before yesterday's update, you don't need us to tell you that life sucks. If you want to help heal the wounds, take a look at Apple's price match policy. As long as you didn't get the 1.8GHz, it looks like you can get the difference back. The price match is only good for 10 days before the update, so if you bought before that, life still sucks.

MusicNet Bought Out; Will Try, Try Again

MusicNet Bought Out; Will Try, Try Again 04/13/2005 01:28 AM
Back in the late 90s, as the recording industry noticed (way too late) that the world was passing them by with file sharing, some politicians began to realize that the industry wasn't doing anything other than whining about how the market had changed on them. After some quiet threats from these politicians, the industry realized it had to at least go through the motions of offering music downloads, and so they created and funded two online music services that were both clearly designed to fail miserably, MusicNot and PressPause... er... MusicNet and PressPlay. Since they were terribly designed with high prices and poor selection (the perfect combo!), users pretty much ignore d them. PressPlay was eventually sold off to what's now Napster and MusicNet has chugged along supported almost entirely by AOL, who has rebranded much of the service as their own. Now, however, the company has been sold to some private investors who claim they're going to revitalize the service. Considering the number of weak, expensive, difficult to use, incompatible music download stores out there, it seems unlikely that a company like MusicNet will break the mold any time soon.

The more I think about Intelliseek, the more I think they'll either try to muscle Technorati out of their market or they'll buy 'em. Their continued actions will result in the software becoming widely available on the Internet as more and more people will wonder why the MPAA targeted that version. [Yahoo]

Four CDs I'm damned glad I bought this
weekend

Four CDs I'm damned glad I bought this
weekend
12/22/2003 11:20 AM
I took a stack of used CDs to my corner record store this weekend and traded them in for a bunch of new music. Here are the picks of the litter:
  • Deep Note: Music of 1970s Adult Cinema: The title says it all, doesn't it? This is a CD that was made for MP3 players. It's amusing to listen to the "tone poems" of ecstatic chanting layered over wah-wah pedals -- once. But the actual funk tracks on this are really nice, the kind of thing you want to put in a high-rotation playlist for urban walking; think of the fat-bass instrumentals from the Fat Albert theme with a George Clinton's slitheriest, perviest licks.

  • Five Red Caps: 1943-1945. Steve Gibson and the Five Red Caps were a comic, vocal-oriented boogie-woogie act that released a ton of music in the 30s, 40s and 50s, almost none of which is available today. This disc of wartime tracks contains some of my favorite music of all time: Grand Central Station ("Got a yearning to be/down in Tennessee/got a sweetheart that waits for me/got the biggest brown eyes/that can hypnotize/makes you wanna leave New York"), Mama Put Your Britches On ("Put away your fancy hose/and your dainty dese and dose/what you need now is Victory Clothes/so Mama put your britches on"), and Gabriel's Band ("Better be prepared if you want a part in that heavenly show/or on judgement day they'll find a place for you below/make your trumpet call ring out/hallelujah sing and shout/gotta know what rhythm's 'bout, if you wanna play in Gabriel's Band")

  • The Beau Hunks Play the Original Little Rascals Music. Roy Shield, the composer of the incidental and theme music for the Little Rascals shorts, was a freaking genius, an unsung hero on the order of Raymond Scott and Carl Stalling. His orchestral music -- faithfully recreated by the Beau Hunks here -- manages to evoke the sepia-toned comedy of the Our Gang serials, especially in some of the really short tracks, like the ten seconds of the woodwind-section laughing; close your eyes when it plays and you can see Spanky holding his gut and rocking back and forth.

  • Doob Doob O' Rama: Filmsongs of Bollywood: One of my plane-trip books for tomorrow is the bound manuscript for Bruce Sterling's new technothriller (Me: "What's a technothriller?" Bruce: "It's like a science fiction novel, only it's got the President in it"), The Zenith Angle, which apparently revolves around Bollywood (I haven't cracked the cover yet, I'm just going off of the stuff he's been blogging). I really enjoyed the Bollywood tracks on the Ghost World soundtrack and the occassional Bollywood licks in Fat Boy Slim and at my local curry hut, but I had no idea of where to begin. This disc turns out to be just the right place for me to have started. I'm enjoying the hell out of it, and I suspect that Asha Bosle has stolen away Tiny Weymouth's place in my heart as my obligatory rock-star crush.

However, I will say that I was pleasantly surprised at how "normal" the two retail establishments I visited this evening were. Why Yahoo bought ODDpost - redux

Why Yahoo bought ODDpost - redux 07/12/2004 05:51 PM

Phil Wainwright groks it. He sees past the obvious GMail copycat syndrome to the real issues:

The fact that Yahoo! has bought a browser-based Outlook clone illustrates how big the threat really is to Microsoft's most lucrative products. These rich-client technologies significantly narrow the gap between browser-based applications and their desktop-based rivals. By simultaneously taking advantage of the unique advantages of being net-native — such as efficiencies of scale for information aggregation and analysis — they can combine a good-enough user experience with capabilities that simply aren't available (except at second-hand) within a traditional desktop environment. That opens the way towards Windows-based Outlook becoming an unloved, legacy application — and provides an opening for other good-enough alternatives to Word, Excel and Powerpoint to muscle their way in.

So Microsoft now faces a crucial decision. Does the company do likewise and bring out a rich-client interface for Hotmail so that its web-based email service begins to rival Gmail, Oddpost and, by implication, Outlook in functionality? Or does it continue to bury its head in the sand and put all its efforts into ensuring it delivers an all-new Windows architecture to a declining pool of desktop loyalists?

The battle is over end-user expereinecs folks. That's why small companies like Friendster and Technorati can come out of no where and develop huge followings. If what you provide rocks - they will come.

Having a hot UI front-end is key to that end-user customer satisfaction.
