With the $1,795 Stylus Pro 4000, Epson focused considerable energy on improving the print engine, including minor improvements to print quality. This was a wise decision; the 2200 and the 7600 produced stunning prints, and Epson sticks with the same UltraChrome pigment-ink formula in the 4000. As a result, the overall quality of both color and monochrome prints is excellent.

It was a simple twist of fate: my HP Scanjet 5200C scanner gave up the ghost at the same time my HP Deskjet 842C ink cartridges went dry. I set off to do some comparison shopping for new cartridges at Office Depot and Best Buy. I decided to check the prices on new scanners as well. Instead of coming home with the best deal on the cartridges, and pricing info on scanners, I came back with an Epson Stylus CX5400. It's a multi-function device that replaces both the HP scanner and the printer, and gives me a standalone personal copier as well. Here's my rationale for getting the Epson CX5400, and the story on how I got it to play nicely on my SUSE 9.1 desktop.

PictureMate_3.jpg imageRemember the lunchbox-looking Epson PictureMate inkjet printer? Well, Bios Magazine took it for a test spray and found it to be more than just cute -- it's got a great picture quality, as well. Epson is pushing the PictureMate as a competitor to other companies' dye-sublimation printers, and its 6-color inkjet process not only stands up in image quality, but it ends up being a lot cheaper, as well. It also supports all your standard memory card formats, like SD/MMC, Memory Stick, CF, Smart Media, and xD, as well as direct printing from PictBridge/USB On-The-Go devices. It's even got Bluetooth if you want to throw down an extra $100 or so for the adapter.

Samsung's First Photo Printer

Samsung's First Photo Printer 06/24/2005 04:00 PM

1560.jpgIt's so slow today that we're reduced to writing about printers. The Samsung SPP-2040 and SPP-2020 are thermal transfer printers that firmly place the Korean giant among such greats as Lexmark and HP. These 1-photo-per-minute printers don't use inkjets. Instead, the heads burn a thin film of color for waterproof and age-proof—call me in 50 years, Samsung, and we'll see how age-proof they are—prints.

They're pricey, at least in the UK, in the $300-$400 range, I'll reckon. And they're shiny and silver. We also didn't write the nasty headline you'll find below. We would have used something much more tasteless.
