authentication
12/19/2004 03:46 PMAuthentication is easily one of the most critical services provided by
your network infrastructure. It is the gatekeeper for every resource
on your network. Workstations, applications, printers, and files would
all be open to the world without a system of ensuring that only those
people who need any given resource can gain access to it. Once you
have accepted the fact that you need authentication, you must decide
whether to stay with one network operating system in the interest of a
completely homogenous network, or accept a "best of breed" system that
will better fulfill your needs, even though it will complicate your
environment. If you choose the second option, often times you are left
with a management nightmare, where you have two, three, or even more
authentication engines to maintain across your network operating
systems.

09/24/2004 03:41 AMA couple of months ago I enthused (some might say "gushed") about
Vintela Authentication Services, which enables you to efficiently -
and securely - manage a single logon/password for Unix, Linux and
Windows applications. In essence, it integrates the Unix and Linux
platforms into Windows' Active Directory. The boys in Linden, Utah
didn't rest on their laurels very long, though. Just last week came
the announcement of a new add-on to VAS - Vintela Group Policy, which
provides a framework for Unix and Linux policy-based management
through the Windows Group Policy system. All integrated, of course,
through Active Directory.

07/28/2004 04:30 AMYou've got a smooth running Windows network. Now some exec decides
that a Unix/Linux application has to be brought in as a
business-critical platform. Not that they know it's a Unix/Linux app,
just that they went to a conference and someone told them (or they saw
a presentation) and it was just the application your organization
needs to achieve some corporate goal. It just happens to only run on
Solaris or Red Hat or SuSE or AIX. You know that it's fruitless to
argue that introducing a non-Windows box will create some management
issues, some technical issues and, possibly, some security issues. The
only answer you'd get would be a directive to solve the issues.

05/25/2004 11:30 PMMicrosoft Corp., together with six of the industry's leading identity
management vendors, today previewed interoperable federated identity
management solutions based on the Web services architecture (WS-*).
Software companies IBM Corp., Netegrity Inc., Oblix Inc., OpenNetwork
Technologies, Ping Identity Corp., RSA Security Inc. and Microsoft
have successfully concluded work demonstrating how their identity
management technologies interoperate using the Web Services Federation
(WS-Federation) specification, part of the WS Security set of
specifications. In his Tech•Ed keynote address today, Andrew Lees,
corporate vice president for Server and Tools Marketing at Microsoft,
showed how federated identity management based on WS-Federation and
the WS-* architecture will simplify the work of IT professionals as
they seek to cut the cost and complexity of passing identity
credentials across security and organization boundaries in a Web
services environment.

Identity Theft: It's The Transaction,
Not The Authentication That's The Issue
04/14/2005 01:21 PMBruce Schneier is continuing on
earli
er points he's made about problems with authentication methods, by
breaking down identity theft and noting that
it's really two different issues: impersonation and fraudulent
transactions. Almost all of the ideas on how to deal with
identity theft focus on stopping the first part, the impersonation,
instead of the second part, the transaction. Schneier claims this is
backwards -- and notes that it's almost the exact opposite of the way
the credit card industry works. Of course, the response would be that
if you can properly authenticate the person, then it does make it more
difficult to even get to the fraudulent transaction. On top of that,
despite Schneier's claims that the credit card industry is in good
shape, plenty of identity theft does involve fraudulent credit card
transactions. Either way, the points do make some sense, and it's
important to clearly break down the real problems involved, instead of
just letting a bunch of politicians come up with some law that they
claim solves the problem -- when it's clear they barely understand the
problem at all.

have a real reluctance to expand the Active Directory schema. When I

dashed off a note that confirmed what others had been telling me, but
which also offered a potential solution.
