Rumor Of The Day: New iSights

Rumor Of The Day: New iSights

Rumor Of The Day: New iSights 09/13/2004 10:44 AM

O'Grady's PowerPage: Details are sketchy, but one can assume that the new iSight camera will have more features to better work with the H.264/AVC video technology coming in Mac OS 10.4.
In related news, Apple is also secretly working on successors to the PowerBook, iBook, Power Mac, and iMac. Some will have modest upgrades, while others will be more "exciting." Apple intends to release new versions some time in the future, on a date which we have yet to be confirm. :-)

There is word afoot that SP-2 does something we wouldn’t like. Although Microsoft insists that it’s a security measure, SP-2 is said to limit the number of TCP/IP open connections. Not a serious issue, you think? Well, think again. How do you suppose all those programs that work to accelerate your downloads do their magic? Yep- they open multiple TCP/IP pipes to one or more Internet locations and download your files in what seems like…

Rumor Mill: EvDO in NYC?

Rumor Mill: EvDO in NYC? 08/27/2004 01:30 PM
Rumors are flying that Verizon is in the midst of building out EvDO in New York City: NYC will serve as a crucial example of how the higher-speed mobile data networks compete next to Wi-Fi. Both networks have upsides in the city. Wi-Fi is higher speed, lower cost, and available in many places. EvDO will be lower speed, higher cost, but available in more places (although cellular coverage is notoriously bad in the city). At the end of the day, there's a niche for both networks and if the price is right, enough customers for both....

I hope what this means is that Apple, in addition to Keynote, has now a word processing and a spreadsheet application. And AppleWorks X is a suite consisting of all these applications, plus, perhaps with a version of FileMaker Pro.
And, hopefully, like the current AppleWorks/ClarisWorks, the entire suite is also available for Windows.

The Atari Landfill Rumor

The Atari Landfill Rumor 03/22/2005 04:31 PM

Five Million E.T. Pieces: I missed this link in my prior post about The Video Game Crash of 1983. It's a great look at what happened to Atari in the early 80's. It ends by confirming the rumor that millions of game cartridges ended up in a landfill somewhere.

[...] Atari, stuck with millions of games and consoles that were largely unsellable at any price, sent fourteen truckloads of merchandise from their plant in El Paso, Texas, to be dumped in a city landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico in late September 1983. In order to keep the site from being looted, steamrollers crushed and flattened the games, and a concrete slab was poured over the remains.

Why would someone "loot" old E.T. cartridges? I think Atari was just afraid of a picture of all those cartridges ending up in a newspaper somewhere.

RUMOR: Apple office software seems
likely

RUMOR: Apple office software seems
likely
01/05/2005 02:07 PM
A small Macintosh software developer has renamed an application it had been calling iWork, lending credence to rumors that Apple plans to introduce office software of the same name.

IGG Software, which has marketed a time-billing application as iWork, has changed the program's name to iBiz. The change, which is reflected on the company's Web site, follows reports on rumor sites that Apple plans to offer its own suite of word processing and presentation software.

Enthusiast site ThinkSecret reported last week that a product from Apple called iWork would include an updated version of Apple's presentation software, Keynote, and a new word processing program, which the site says will be called Pages. The site predicted Apple would unveil the product at next week's Macworld Expo in San Francisco. Such a program would be an interesting move for Apple, which has for years kept its office software ambitions limited, counting instead on Microsoft to produce a Mac version of Microsoft Office.
