Can open source software free your mind?

Can open source software free your mind? 09/13/2004 08:45 AM

How do you organize all those little notes and ideas that you have spread out all over the place in a way that you can actually use them and make have them make some sense? That's one of the goals of a class of software known as mind mapping.  Once the realm only of high-priced commercial applications, there is now at least one open source option. It's called FreeMind and it's licensed under the GPL.

Free software and Open Source: The freedom Debate and Its Consequences By Mathias Klang
ht tp://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue10_3/klang/index.html

Abstract:
To most outsiders the ethics of software is not something usually considered. To most proficient computer users with a passing interest in this question the ethics of software is recognised as one of the fundamental questions in the digital rights area. To most of the latter, terms such as free software, open source, and their derivatives (FLOSS, FOSS, Software Freedom) are interchangeable. Choosing one over the other is a matter of taste rather than politics. However, to most insiders the
question is not one of taste. There is a fundamental difference between the two areas even if they share a similar root. Free software is not the same as open source. The two groups differ in their fundamental philosophical approach to software and its importance to society as a whole. This paper examines the two groups’ differing philosophies and explores how their actions have affected software development, access to fundamental software infrastructure, and the development of the concept of freedom.

What happens when the effectiveness of your favorite search engine turns against you, when it becomes almost too effective to be useful, giving you so much information that you're not sure where to start?... Well, my overworked friend, you're in luck. Today, I'll be covering the holy grail of information gathering: asking people... In the process, I will also show you some of the better locations to begin your searches and give you a few pointers in getting the most out of your queries.

Whenever I mention open source software, or the Linux operating system, I can be sure of getting lots of "interesting" mail in my inbox. There's a good bit of confusion about open source software among members of the general public, journalists of the general press and even among those of us who should know better.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to speak at the Open Source and Free Software conference, held by the Knowledge Media Design Institute at the University of Toronto.

The conference was designed to explore the legal, moral, political, social, commercial, and technical perspectives of open source and free software, to build a broader understanding of the movement.

I spoke on a panel entitled Education and Public Knowledge: Open Access, Open Content. The aim of the panel was to understand how the lessons from open source and free software could help develop a thriving open-content ecosystem, within the context of education.

The entire conference will be online soon -- check it out!

Advancing Economic Research on the Free and Open Source Software Mode of Production by Dalle, J.-M., P. A. David, Rishab A. Ghosh, & W. E. Steinmueller
http://opensourc e.mit.edu/papers/davidetal.pdf

Abstract:
Early contributions to the academic literature on free/libre and open source software (F/LOSS) movements have been directed primarily at identifying the motivations that account for the sustained and often intensive involvement of many people in this non-contractual and unremunerated productive activity. This issue has been particularly prominent in economists' contributions to the literature, and it reflects a view that widespread voluntary participation in the creation of economically valuable goods that is to be distributed without charge constitutes a significant behavioral anomaly. Undoubtedly, the motivations of F/LOSS developers deserve to be studied more intensively, but not because their behaviors are unique, or historically unprecedented. In this essay we argue that other aspects of the "open source" phenomenon are just as intriguing, if not more so, and possibly are also more consequential topics for economic analysis. We describe the re-focusing and re-direction of empirical and theoretical research in an integrated international project (based at Stanford University/SIEPR) that aims at better understanding a set of less widely discussed topics: the modes of organization, governance and performance of F/LOSS development -- viewed as a collective distributed mode of production.. We discuss of the significance of tackling those questions in order to assess the potentialities of the "open source way of working" as a paradigm for a broader class of knowledge and information-goods production, and conclude with proposals for the trajectory of future research along that line.

Decoding the "Free/Open Source (F/OSS) Puzzle" - a Survey of Theretical and Empirical Contributions by Maria Alessandra Rossi
http://opensource.mi t.edu/papers/rossi.pdf

Abstract:
F/OSS software has been described by many as a puzzle. In the past five years, it has stimulated the curiosity of scholars in a variety of fields, including economics, law, psychology, anthropology and computer science, so that the number of contributions on the subject has increased exponentially. The purpose of this paper is to provide a sufficiently comprehensive account of these contributions in order to draw some general conclusions on the state of our understanding of the phenomenon and identify directions for future research. The exercise suggests that what is puzzling about F/OSS is not so much the fact that people freely contribute to a good they make available to all, but rather the complexity of its institutional structure and its ability to organizationally evolve over time.

Free/Open Source Research Community
http://opensource.mit.edu/h ome.html

Free/open source software (F/OSS) is software for which the human-readable source code is made available to the user of the software, who can then modify the code in order to fit the software to the user’s needs. The source code is the set of written instructions that define a program in its original form, and when it’s made fully accessible programmers can read it, modify it, and redistribute it, thereby improving and adapting the software. In this manner the software evolves at a rate unmatched by traditional proprietary software. For many years free/open source software has been building momentum. Beginning amidst the technical cultures that produced the Internet and World Wide Web, it is now causing quite a stir in the commercial world as large software corporations are finding themselves competing against commercially available open source software.

This new demand for free and open source software has piqued interest among scholars in disciplines ranging from sociology to economics to social psychology, and has raised questions in fields of application ranging from innovation processes to strategic management. As an aid to these scholars, they offer the Free / Open Source Research Community. By having visitors contribute to our research databases, they hope to establish a community of information exchange that will lead to a greater understanding of open source and it's applications.

In the spirit of free and open source software (F/OSS), they are attempting to establish a community in which information will be freely exchanged, so that others may further the understanding of open source and its implications outside the realm of software development. They invite researchers to post their papers on open source and free software here, and to add themselves to the research directory, so that their community can become steadily larger and more comprehensive.

As an occasional user of Linux, and someone in the software industry, I've followed the "Open Source" movement for quite some time. To a minority, Open Source Software (specifically GPL licensed Open Source Software) represents an ideological and sociological movement, something that will change the world. To the majority, it is simply a way to get cool and useful software without going through the expense of buying, or the hassle of pirating it.

That is so beautiful.

And watch Doc's IT Garage for more goings on in this area. It's time to cash in and kick the old school - out. I guess the next scene is Portland Aug. 1-4 at OSCON.

Script ing News: 5/17/2004: Dave Winer announced today that the kernel of Manila and Radio — the object databae code — will be open-sourced sometime in the next few months.

To fans of UserLand Software it must seem inevitable that the kernel will go this way, it sure did to me. But I am on the board of directors of the company, and I persuaded my fellow board members that it would be in the company's interest to let the kernel develop separately from the products that build on it.

Don't get too excited, however — these are the ugly guts of the system, written in C. It will take a fair amount of work for someone to do anything constructive with it.

Critics of open source software have argued that, from an economic standpoint, "giving the product away" makes no sense. As a new business model, open source has been the victim of many misconceptions and mischaracterizations: that it's the equivalent of communism, that's it's like a virus, and that it's economically dangerous to society, for example. In such a hostile atmosphere, it's not easy to objectively assess a new paradigm that differs greatly from the status quo. However, though a comparable model may not exist in the IT sector, a parallel working model for open source already exists in at least one other field, biomedical research, and this model has been proven to be of great benefit to society.
