Memo to China: Open the Internet Cafes

Memo to China: Open the Internet Cafes 09/23/2002 05:53 PM
China's government is so fierce about controlling citizens' access to information that it recently shut down thousands of Internet cafes and blocked search engines Google and AltaVista. And the U.S. government is treating the situation like some kind of Star Trek episode in which Captain Picard invokes the "prime directive" to explain his inaction.

Vietnam Wants Internet Cafes To Monitor

Vietnam Wants Internet Cafes To Monitor
Internet Usage

If there's one thing that's obviously available in bunches on the internet, it's "bad information." However the Vietnamese government has decided that "bad information" (which they seem to believe is anything they don't agree with, or anything that portrays them in a negative light - this post, for example, would probably qualify) is illegal and must be stopped online. They've now told local governments to start monitoring internet usage and have warned internet cafe owners they can be fined or jailed if any of their patrons uploads or downloads "bad information." To help track this sort of thing, they also want all internet cafe owners to "document what Web sites their clients visit and for how long." In other words, it's now prohibitively expensive to run an internet cafe in Vietnam. It's amazing that these sorts of regimes< /a> honestly believe that stopping such info, at the cost of killing off all of the benefits the internet provides, is actually worthwhile.

Spy Cameras In Shanghai Internet Cafes

Spy Cameras In Shanghai Internet Cafes 04/22/2004 01:26 PM
Already all internet usage in China is heavily monitored and filtered. However, apparently that's not enough for their internet cafes. It's not even enough to have internet cafe operators monitor usage to make sure nothing "bad" is happening. Instead, they're going one step further to install video cameras in internet cafes which send a broadcast to a central "supervisory center" where someone will make sure that nothing bad is happening. They claim it was spot illegal activity "immediately" - though they don't explain what they'll do after they spot that illegal activity. What's the next step? Having everyone wear their own camera all the time and have it send a constant stream to the same "supervisory center" in case you do or see anything bad?

Scriptable, Internet-controlled sex toys

Scriptable, Internet-controlled sex toys 06/24/2004 04:37 PM
I filed this story for Wired News today about one of the more interesting gadget demonstrations at this weekend's Erotica LA porn industry convention: remote-control, "scriptable" sex toys. Adult entertainment providers will soon sell celebrity-branded "scripts" for the devices (think: Jenna Jameson, Tera Patrick, Ron Jeremy, and the like), which work like mobile phone ringtones but -- well-- then again, kinda different.
Using a two-way video, audio and text chat interface, expo attendees were invited to control Doc Johnson-branded iVibe pleasure devices being put to use by models at an undisclosed location, in various states of undress.

"The device control works both ways -- the person on each end controls the speed and rhythm of the device the other is using," explained High Joy President Amir Vatan, as one attendee cranked his remote partner's iVibe to warp-speed intensity. The Internet-enabled products will become publicly available before the end of 2004, and will later be integrated into an assortment of Web porn destinations.

"It's the ultimate in site stickiness," said Vatan. "For online adult providers, more interactivity means more traffic, and more traffic means more revenue."
