How The Copyright Gap Harms The Content
Delivery Industry

How The Copyright Gap Harms The Content
Delivery Industry
08/02/2004 04:42 AM
Tim Wu is subbing for Lawrence Lessig on his own blog, and comes up with an interesting theory about how different forms of regulation impact the telephony and content industries in different ways -- something he labels as a "copyright gap." Basically, the argument is that the government seems to favor new entrants in the telecom world, which has created success stories like Vonage and Skype, where they can come up with new innovations in order to compete, without (for the most part) worrying about government regulations holding them back. However, in the content industry, government regulations tend towards favoring the incumbents heavily, such that companies need to ask permission to innovate, because the content industry has somehow convinced politicians that any innovation will completely destroy, rather than reinvent the industry. It's for this reason that Wu believes VoIP and email have succeeded while interactive TV and internet libraries have faltered.

Mobile Phone Radiation Harms DNA, New
Study Finds
12/22/2004 01:23 AM
Radio waves from mobile phones harm body cells and damage DNA in laboratory conditions, according to a new study majority-funded by the European Union, researchers said on Monday. The so-called Reflex study, conducted by 12 research groups in seven European countries, did not prove that mobile phones are a risk to health but concluded that more research is needed to see if effects can also be found outside a lab.

The $100 billion a year mobile phone industry asserts that there is no conclusive evidence of harmful effects as a result of electromagnetic radiation. About 650 million mobile phones are expected to be sold to consumers this year, and over 1.5 billion people around the world use one. The research project, which took four years and which was coordinated by the German research group Verum, studied the effect of radiation on human and animal cells in a laboratory.

Moneydance Eases a Tax Burden

Moneydance Eases a Tax Burden 04/11/2005 08:22 PM
Jeff Carlson (~1010 words)

Like many people in the United States right now, I'm putting together my taxes. My wife and I have a few investments and a shared money market account through Morgan Stanley. I needed some information from the money market account (how much we paid for health insurance last year). Although we have lots of paper statements at home, I figured it was time I put all of it into Quicken, where I keep track of my checking, savings, and credit card accounts. I've been lax about digitizing that information, because most of the time it's all taken care of by our financial planner at Morgan Stanley. The company offers online access to my account, so I thought I would download my data, import it into Quicken, and run a report that would spit out the figures I needed.

  • Frank Rich (NY Times): This Time Bill O'Reilly Got It Right. No matter how long the overlap between Mr. Carville and Mr. Begala's TV and campaign roles, that brand and CNN itself are now as inextricably bound to the Democrats as Fox is to the Republicans. The network has succeeded in an impossible feat -- ceding Mr. O'Reilly the moral high ground. The Bush campaign doesn't have to enlist Fox hosts for its staff since they're willing to whore for it without even being asked.
