Software patents are bad for coders like

Software patents are bad for coders like
literary patents would be for writers
06/22/2005 01:49 AM
Cory Doctorow: Richard Stallman, creator of the Free Software movement, has written a tremendous essay for the Guardian on the risks of software patents. Richard undertakes a gedankenexperiment about "literary patents" and the impact they would have had on Victor Hugo as he sat down to pen Les Miserables.
Now consider this hypothetical literary patent: Claim 1: a communication process that represents, in the mind of a reader, the concept of a character who has been in jail for a long time and subsequently changes his name...

These patents would all cover the story of one character in a novel. They overlap, but they do not precisely duplicate each other, so they could all be valid simultaneously - all the patent holders could have sued Victor Hugo. Any one of them could have prohibited publication of Les Misérables.

You might think these ideas are so simple that no patent office would have issued them. We programmers are often amazed by the simplicity of the ideas that real software patents cover - for instance, the European Patent Office has issued a patent on the progress bar, and one on accepting payment via credit cards. These would be laughable if they were not so dangerous.

Six Apart, Moreover, and FeedDemon Team up with NewsGator to Enhance Content, Search, and Synchronization Capabilities for Customers

DENVER, CO -- September 29, 2004 -- NewsGator Technologies, the leading RSS software platform company, announced today three significant partnerships which will enhance its leading RSS technology platform. NewsGator customers can now synchronize their online subscription information with FeedDemon, they will enjoy a wider range of search content in their custom search feeds, and they will experience a tighter integration with leading weblog platforms.

FeedDemon

NewsGator and Bradbury Software announced today that FeedDemon will now synchronize subscription information with NewsGator Online Services. FeedDemon users will now be able to read their selected content not only on their desktop, but also on the web, on their mobile devices, on their Media Centers, or in Microsoft Outlook or other popular email clients. The latest addition to NewsGator's "any time, any place, any device" strategy, this partnership ensures that FeedDemon users can enjoy the benefits that NewsGator's customers have enjoyed since early 2004 -- access to their content from anywhere, without having to read the same things twice.

"We're excited to extend our reach to multiple devices by partnering with NewsGator," said Nick Bradbury, founder of Bradbury Software and creator of FeedDemon. "Our customers have been asking for synchronization capability like this for a long time, and NewsGator is a leader in this space."

The next beta release of FeedDemon 1.5 will contain this synchronization capability.

Moreover

NewsGator and Moreover announced an agreement to include Moreover news search data in NewsGator's search feeds. Part of the NewsGator Online Services platform, NewsGator search feeds include filtered data from blogs, news sites, SEC filings, and other sources, and return results in a single feed, with no advertising. In addition, NewsGator will carry Moreover's aggregated news search feeds in its desktop and online products, providing topic-specific information to users.

"We're delighted to have been chosen by NewsGator to be the primary provider of news search content for NewsGator Online Services," said Jim Pitkow, CEO of Moreover.

Six Apart

NewsGator and Six Apart, the leading provider of weblog publishing software, announced a co-marketing relationship focused on enterprise sales of the two companies' leading technology platforms. NewsGator also announced that it will be releasing new plug-ins and other technology to make it simple to post feed content from NewsGator products to Six Apart blogs in Movable Type and TypePad. The companies plan significant future co-development work to enhance the experience for RSS and blog customers.

Andrew Anker, Executive Vice President of Six Apart, said "We're very pleased to partner with NewsGator as they continue to make it easy for their big installed base of weblog readers to become weblog creators. Tighter integration between NewsGator's products and Movable Type and TypePad will be great for our mutual customers."

Greg Reinacker, founder and CTO of NewsGator, said, "We're very excited about these strategic partnerships. Closer integration with other applications, including the leading desktop reader and the leading weblog publishing systems, will significantly enhance the RSS experience for consumers and enterprises, and our arrangement with Moreover strengthens our content offerings as well. Combined, these arrangements signify our ongoing investment as the leader in the RSS platform space to ensure that this technology penetrates as rapidly as possible."

Ferry Wi-Fi to Expand

Ferry Wi-Fi to Expand 08/27/2004 01:31 PM
The trial deployment of Wi-Fi networks covering Puget Sound ferry routes will be expanded: The initial deployment covered one route, which Glenn trialed and covered for the New York Times. This fall, a couple of popular routes out of Seattle will get the service. The networks include a switch and APs from Chantry Networks. The ferry system expects to charge for the service and they can likely expect a good number of customers. Glenn reported that the boats that will initially have the service carry 12 million passenger trips per year. One of the routes, Seattle to Bremerton, is a 60 minute passage. Commuters who make the trip each day will likely be willing to pay to be productive during their two hours on the boat every day....

Verizon Wireless said it will introduce its 3G service to 11 markets starting next week: In what appears to be a direct hit against Wi-Fi, Verizon also said it would launch its EV-DO service in 20 airports around the country. A recent report from TeleAnalytics showed that the use of Wi-Fi in airports has grown by more than 350 percent in a six-month period. It appears that Verizon is looking to capture a bit of that demand for wireless Internet access. However, its service still costs $80 a month while most Wi-Fi access charges are significantly less....
