Psychic TV turned on again

Psychic TV turned on again 09/06/2004 05:23 AM
David Pescovitz: skull_stickerTransmedia artist Genesis P-Orridge has reactivated his seminal industrial/trance band Psychic TV to tour Europe and the United States beginning this month. Last winter, I was fortunate enough to catch a rehearsal and they sounded fabulous--tight, energized, and... happy. (Douglas Rushkoff was playing keyboards with the group for several dates late last year but will not be joining this particular "de-tour.")

Genesis is quite a sight these days as well. As part of the Breaking Sex art exploration he's immersed in with his other half, Lady Jaye, the two received identical breast implants on Valentine's Day 2003. Gen's new mantra? "S/he is Her/e."

Psychic and other predictions revisited

Psychic and other predictions revisited 12/28/2004 03:40 PM
There's still time for some of these 2004 predictions to come true, but not much. For those of us who like schadenfreude (pleasure at another's mis-fortune, har): the p aranormal survey, the pet psychic, the banal, the faith-based.

Brent’s Psychic Predictions for
2004

Brent’s Psychic Predictions for
2004
12/30/2003 02:53 PM
Are RSS aggregators pretty much there, just needing some tweaks and small features—or at they still at the very beginning of their evolution, with a long road still ahead?

This question was asked on the NetNewsWire beta testing list. It’s a good question.

Answer: aggregators still have a long road ahead. What you see now is just the beginning.

I have an idea of some of the things you’ll see in 2004 (not just in NetNewsWire but in aggregators in general). So consider this as Brent’s psychic predictions for 2004.

1. Atom syndication support. Some aggregators already have this, and I suspect most will by mid-2004.

2. Synching. The idea is to synchronize not only your subscription lists but also the read/unread status of individual headlines—and to make it so it works between different apps, even apps running on different operating systems.

3. Easier subscribing. One of the problems for new users is the problem of subscribing to feeds. The “feed” URL scheme is a step forward here, because it makes it so you can subscribe to feeds directly from your browser. It also means instead of lots of ways to do this, which is inherently confusing, aggregator developers and users can collapse it down to one way. (I suspect there will be other good ideas too—especially in the realm of finding feeds.) Making all this easy for new users is a high priority.

Anyway... individual aggregators, NetNewsWire included, will add lots of other new features not listed above. The above are just the things I predict aggregators will do in common for 2004. I expect lots of innovation to come from all over, but I can’t predict what those innovations will be.

Years from now aggregators will be like email apps: we’ll know what an aggregator should do and what the UI conventions are. But for now we get to be creative, try new ideas, see what sticks. So—my last prediction—I except 2004 to be fun.

Notebooks For Gamers?

Notebooks For Gamers? 02/11/2004 11:07 PM
Every time I wonder why anyone would buy a desktop machine again, when notebooks are quite powerful and much more useful when portable, someone reminds me of the gamers. The gamers always want more powerful and customizable desktop machines so they can do more with their machines. However, the notebook makers are realizing that the desktop market may be a dying one, and thus are trying their best to create notebook computers for gamers. Of course, as someone points out in the article, the price difference will still make this a very small market. I also wonder if it wouldn't help to make these gaming notebooks more easily customizable, since part of the appeal of desktops seems to be the ability to modify them.

IBM Going After Gamers With Their
Grid... Again

IBM Going After Gamers With Their
Grid... Again
08/18/2004 05:22 AM
Despite running into all sorts of problems with their massively overhyped grid/utility computing system, IBM now says they want to go after online gaming companies, to let IBM host the games on their system. Of course, this isn't exactly new. They announced something similar more than two years ago, and it doesn't sound like they've gotten much traction with it. Of course, in the article, IBM spins this by saying they've been "sizing up" the market for two years, which basically means they've been trying and failing to sell into this market. However, they've clearly seen enough press coverage about the online gaming market, that they decided it was time to go public with their second major attempt at the market.

What Will Gamers Expect from their
Libraries?

A Brave New Gamer World

“ ‘We've got an entire group of people under age 30 who grew up playing video games,’ said Jim Gee, professor in the UW-Madison School of Education. ‘It's completely changing the way people think about education and the workplace.’

This ‘gamer generation’ includes some 90 million people in the U.S. alone, ages 15 to 35. In fact, sales of video games have now surpassed sales of TVs, DVDs and CDs….

A host of new data is suggesting that video games have created a new generation of employees and executives, bigger than the baby boomers, who will dramatically transform the workplace.

Researchers like John C. Beck and Mitchell Wade, authors of the book ‘Got Game: How the Gamer Generation is Reshaping Business Forever’ argue that managers who understand and harness this generation's distinct attributes will leap far ahead of the competition.

Beck and Wade say these 90 million rising professionals, through sheer numbers, will inevitably dominate business and are already changing the rules. Although many of the changes are positive, such as more open communication and creative problem solving, they have caused a generation gap that frustrates gamers and the boomers who manage them….” [The Capital Times, via Library Link of the Day]

Pro video gamers have it tough

Pro video gamers have it tough 07/26/2004 01:59 AM
Great K5 piece on the plight of the professional video-gamer, plagued by new game releases and vendors who build games for non-competition play.
In this, I am referring to the Cyberathlete Professional League's one time decision to switch from the Quake series, which they had been using since the start of their foundation, to a newer (and more popular) game at the time, the infamous Counter-Strike.

Now for most of the 'professional gamers' who have lived off their earnings from past CPL tournaments, this meant the end of their career unless they made the jump from Quake to Counter-Strike. Unfortunately, switching games is not as simple because both games have different sets of physics and gameplay; in Quake you battled one another one on one while Counter-Strike is a team-based game, the players usually in numbers of five.

Now, even more recently, the CPL has announced for their World Tour that they would be switching games once again, this time back to a duel based game. There will still be a Counter-Strike tournament during the event, but this leaves many to wonder how much more air time does Counter-Strike have before it finally gets shelved as well.
