Wi-Fi Campus-wide Commercially
07/29/2004 01:06 AMAUT will rely on Reach Wireless to install a campus-wide, commercial
hotzone: In the U.S., we're used to universities and other educational
institutions installing Wi-Fi as part of their basic infrastructure,
including the cost of operation out of their physical plant or IT
budget, alum fund, students fees (partly hidden), or other endowments.
Auckland, New Zealand's technology institute has turned to commercial
operator Reach Wireless, which employs RoamAD's quasi-mesh/cell Wi-Fi
architecture, to deploy a hotzone across campus and handle the
finances. AUT will own the infrastructure and carry the hotzone's
traffic over its own Internet feed. But Reach Wireless will operate
the service, collect fees, and provided customer and billing support.
Students and faculty will be charged NZ$16.95 (US$15.25) per month.
Existing Reach customers and the general public will also be able to
use the campus network. Current subscribers won't pay extra for
access; vice-versa, AUT affiliated subscribers will have Reach within
reach at a small additional cost off campus. Here's the kicker from a
press release: The network was designed in one day and deployed in
less than a week....

Wireless Management Of A Computer
System: Patented
09/03/2004 02:40 PM
The patent system is just getting out of control. The latest is that
a company named Expand Beyond has
paten
ted a system for wireless monitoring and management of computer
systems. The patent (
6,772,169) sounds incredibly broad,
covering any systems where someone is using a portable device with a
wireless connection to monitor computer systems. Why is this
patentable? The big difference here is the "wireless" aspect -- which
isn't a new technology. All they're doing is taking something that
existed over a wired network before and making it wireless. To say
that's "non-obvious" (as a patent must be) is a joke.

Multimedia broadcast technology selected
Multimedia broadcast technology selected
06/22/2005 02:56 AMDigital Fountain, a vendor of telecommunications infrastructure
technology, announced Tuesday that 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership
Project) selected Digital Fountain's DF Raptor technology as the
single standard for the broadcasting of multimedia streams and files
to cell phones.

3GPP is a consortium of numerous international telecommunications
standards bodies.
The consortium is currently wrapping up Release 6 of its 3G
standards, which will for the first time include a protocol for MBMS
(multimedia broadcast multicast service).
Up until now, wireless operators were forced to deliver multimedia
over unicast protocols, which is both inefficient and more expensive,
according to Charlie Oppenheimer, CEO at Digital Fountain.
"If you have to deliver multimedia content on a unicast basis you
may use 10 times the bandwidth but you can't charge 10 times the
price," Oppenheimer said.
DF Raptor is a multicast protocol that also overcomes a singular
challenge with broadcast technology -- there is no back channel for
two-way communications that can be used to send error messages.
Digital Fountain tackles the problem by using what the industry calls
"erasure correction," which transmits a number of repair packets with
every file or stream. The repair packets are specially encoded with an
unusual property that is something akin to stem cells in that they can
be used mathematically to recreate with precision any information lost
in transmission.
"You become indifferent to which packets you receive as long as you
receive enough of them," Oppenheimer said. "So the return channel
isn't needed."
The technology offers major benefits to users, operators, and
manufacturers.
For users, the technology can configure applications to withstand
any amount of loss from a bad transmission. It also gives operators
the ability to send extra packets with the least amount of bandwidth.
For hardware manufacturers, it will allow them to lower the cost of
equipment because it is "computationally efficient," Oppenheimer
said.
There is also industry talk that the satellite radio networks
Sirius and XM Satellite Radio are looking to use this technology to
deliver both audio and video streams over their services in the
future.
Although Digital Fountain will be paid a licensing fee by users,
Oppenheimer
said its technology was selected over all the other public domain
applications whose technology could have been selected without a
licensing fee.
Release 6 of 3GPP's standard that will include MBMS is expected
sometime in 2006.

Copyright, Technology, and The New
Surveillance
Copyright, Technology, and The New
Surveillance
04/28/2004 06:52 PMSonia Katyal at Fordham Law School has written a very interesting
paper on the relationship between copyright enforcement and privacy in
the digital age, with focus on the increasingly invasive methods that
rightsholders use to control how intellectual property is accessed and
shared. Excerpt:
A few years ago, it was fanciful to imagine a world where intellectual
property owners - such as record companies, software owners, and
publishers - were capable of invading the most sacred areas of the
home in order to track, deter, and control uses of their products.
Yet, today, strategies of copyright enforcement have rapidly
multiplied, each strategy more invasive than the last. This new
surveillance exposes the paradoxical nature of the Internet: It offers
both the consumer and creator a seemingly endless capacity for human
expression - a virtual marketplace of ideas - alongside an
insurmountable array of capacities for panoptic surveillance. As a
result, the Internet both enables and silences speech, often
simultaneously.
This paradox, in turn, leads to the tension between privacy and
intellectual property. Both areas of law face significant challenges
because of technology's ever-expanding pace of development. Yet courts
often exacerbate these challenges by sacrificing one area of law for
the other, by eroding principles of informational privacy for the sake
of unlimited control over intellectual property. Laws developed to
address the problem of online piracy - in particular, the DMCA - have
been unwittingly misplaced, inviting intellectual property owners to
create private systems of copyright monitoring that I refer to as
piracy surveillance. Piracy surveillance comprises extrajudicial
methods of copyright enforcement that detect, deter, and control acts
of consumer infringement.
Ms. Katyal's paper was selected as the winning entry for the 2004 Yale
Law School Cybercrime and Digital Law Enforcement Conference writing
competition.
