Adesso's Cameras: Mini? Check. Assy?
Check.
07/22/2004 08:19 PM
Kyocera isn't
the only camera company taking hot fashion tips from Apple's iPod
mini. Adesso has a new line of new cameras that seem to match, at
least superficially, the green, pink, and blue colors of the mini.
However, in an interesting break from Kyocera's form, the Adesso
cameras seem to be exceptionally, well, crappy, with the high
end model rolling in with a 1.3-megapixel sensor. I guess hoping
for an LCD on the back of these is asking too much, huh? I think this
is one time when following the 'smaller is better' ethic is probably a
misstep.
Even worse? They're not even out. (Thanks,
Justin!)

Trying to Understand WiMax? The Wall
Street Journal Explains
05/24/2004 02:21 PMThe Journal's Nick Wingfield lays out the WiMax field, including the
basis of its technology, its potential for rollout, and the current
state of wireless broadband: Wingfield's article is a solid portrayal
of the state of the industry, including the likely date for real
equipment being available in the U.S. (2006, he notes, which jibes
with fellow editor Nancy Gohring's research among WiMax-backin
gcompanies), the market size, and the potential competition with
cellular data and existing wireline services. WiMax and its early
relatives has the best potential in areas in which service is
difficult to obtain (the prairie or Manhattan), wireline services
offer limits to uploads and downloads far below a wireless broadband
offering (at the edges of DSL coverage, for instance), or where
wireless broadband is just plain cheaper. In some cases, early
wireless broadband offers high speeds at cost that are the same or as
little as half of competing wireline offerings. I'm not bullish on
WiMax's mobile options, which are even further out in the future for
deployment because by the time that standard is set, the cell
companies will have had three or four years dealing with the first and
probably second iterations of 3G cellular data. Meanwhile, Wi-Fi might
blanket whole cities, an increasing trend. [link via Brian Chin]...

04/20/2004 11:26 PMIn an academic setting, a score of 90 percent earns an automatic "A".
By that measure, the team shaping Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 merits
a similar high passing grade. When the innovative application debuted
last October, it reflected the pioneering edge of the digital
note-taking category. Today, Microsoft honed that edge by announcing
the preview release of Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 Service Pack 1
(OneNote SP1). Ninety percent of the features included in the software
update are a direct result of customer input and feedback -- with the
remaining 10 percent coming from indirect customer feedback.

Recording Industry Thinks The UK Doesn't
Understand Exchange Rates
05/20/2004 01:05 PMWe've already had stories about how the recording industry is looking
for any possible way to
raise
prices on digital downloads (showing just how little they
understand the concept of an emerging market), and now we find out
that the standard $1 price is really more for marketing reasons. Now
that Napster has launched in the UK, they seem to think that it's a
good idea to use the "1 standard unit of currency" as the main price -
probably because it looks better in advertisements. So, in the US, a
track is $1.
In the UK
it's £1. Now, while the recording industry couldn't be
bothered, most users understand exchange rates, and realize that
£1 = ~ $1.77 (with some fluctuations). In other words, for the
sake of being able to use the "1 standard unit of currency" pricing,
the recording industry gets to nearly double the price in the UK.
This doesn't seem likely to encourage much adoption - but may
encourage plenty of resentment. Of course, by this point, it appears
the recording industry thrives on resentment.

Keep the public involved in Canadian
copyright legislation!
08/06/2004 07:52 AMWith the Canadian Supreme Court okaying file-sharing and the Canadian
Parliament vowing to "fix" this, it's time to take action. If you're a
Canadian resident, there's a petition to Parliament you can sign to
encourage lawmakers to do the right thing.
THEREFORE, your petitioners call upon Parliament to ensure generally
that users are recognised as interested parties and are meaningfully
consulted about proposed changes to the Copyright Act and to ensure in
particular that any changes at least preserve all existing users'
rights, including the right to use copyrighted materials under Fair
Dealing and the right to make private copies of audio recordings. We
further call upon Parliament not to extend the term of copyright; and
to recognise the right of citizens to personally control their own
communication devices.

Thunderbird notifier wish
Thunderbird notifier wish
08/23/2004 12:46 AMOn Windows, Thunderbird will pop up a small window by the system
tray when a new message arrives. The window shows the number of new
messages as the message arrives. As someone who leaves my email client
open all day long, I don’t see the usefulness of this. What
would be a lot more useful is something like Traylook from
Pergenex Software offers for Outlook.
Traylook adds popup notification to Outlook. When new messages
arrive, the notifier includes the sender and the subject of the
message. For multiple messages, the popup scrolls through all of the
messages. See the
screenshots and a Flash animation.
This doesn’t seem like a tough thing to do as a Thunderbird
extension. Anyone with the time to take a crack at it?
