Apple Plays Nice, Announces New iMac
Early; Details Slim
07/02/2004 08:20 AM

imac_flat.jpg imageApple has announced that new iMacs are in the pipe, this time using G5 processor and a completely new redesign. Rumors indicate the new design, which will be unveiled in September, will shove most of the logic hardware behind the flat panel display. As usual, we welcome any insight or pictures or stolen plans from Steve Jobs's nightstand.

And against form, this information comes from Apple themselves, who made an announcement on their website detailing that the existing stock of iMacs would not be replenished, and that plans to push out new units had slipped behind. It's a commendable move, and one Apple should be applauded for taking. Likely, Apple had planned to announce the new iMac at WWDC, but was unsure about unit production. MacMinute adds the tidbit that Jobs may have dropped a clue at WWDC when he used the search terms "iMac" and "Paris" to demonstrate new search technology. Apple Expo is scheduled this September in Paris.

Blue-light-emitting dental flashlight
better than mouthwash

Blue-light-emitting dental flashlight
better than mouthwash
04/05/2005 06:35 AM
Cory Doctorow: Dental-care researchers are proposing a blue-light-emitting "mini-lightsaber" that you shine on your gums to kill bad bacterial more effectively than mouthwash.
"Micro-organisms called black-pigmented bacteria (BPB) such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia have been implicated in the initiation and progression of gum disease," says Soukos. Blue light kills these bacteria because it is absorbed by specific chemical compounds within the bacteria - called iron-porphyrins - causing a cascade of reactions fatal to the organism...

Bacteria in the pure culture were killed in seconds, whereas bacteria in the plaque samples were killed selectively. Those containing iron-porphyrins were most affected - a beneficial result as it is iron-porphyrins that help bacteria in harming the gums. It is the acidic environment produced by the harmful bugs that results in tooth decay.

Intel to announce 'Napa' Centrino 3 at
IDF?
08/27/2004 01:56 PM
Intel hasn't even shipped 'Sonoma', the second generation of its Centrino mobile platform yet, but it may well announce the third-generation at Intel Developer Forum (IDF) next month. So claim unnamed sources cited by DigiTimes. The site's article refers what we'll call 'Centrino 3' as "a notebook-use dual-core processor, codenamed 'Napa', slated for launch in the first quarter of 2006".

Napa is actually the successor to Sonoma, and is believed to be the platform that will incorporate the dual-core Pentium M, 'Yonah'; a new chipset, 'Callistoga'; and Intel's next-gen. wireless solution 'Gaston'. Yonah is essentially two 'Dothan' cores plus a whole heap of shared L2 cache. Callistoga appears to be a beefed up version of 'Alviso', the 'Grantsdale'-like mobile chipset that's due to appear in Q1 2005. Callistoga is said to provide Alviso's 533MHz frontside bus, PCI Express support, Hi-Def audio and 667MHz DDR 2, but with Serial ATA II.

A year on from Napa, Intel is apparently lining up 'Santa Rosa', with a new dual-core Pentium M, 'Merom'; chipset, 'Crestine'; and wireless component, 'Gaston 2'. Merom may introduce HyperThreading to Pentium M line, but will at least represent the next generation of core beyond Dothan.

Interface designer Matthew Thomas rips into Ubuntu and GNOME. Most of these complaints can be summarized as "GNOME isn't Mac OS" (no, really?). He's in for some serious frustration if he thinks he can get 15-year-old conventions like menu bars inside windows changed; the GNOME project has had years to copy the Mac but they made a conscious decision not to.

asus_v6800v.jpgAsus is showing off their latest laptop with the V6800V, which they claim is the world's thinnest and lightest 15-inch laptop. The V6800V stands at a pixie-like 0.9 inches thick and weighs just 4.4 pounds. Based on the Sonoma edition of the Intel Centrino chipset, the V6800V starts at 1.73 GHz with a 60GB hard drive. On the higher end, Asus offers 2 GHz and 100GB as well as the option for an 8-cell battery which they claim can hit eight hours, although I'm assuming that's time spent at the command prompt until I see otherwise. Available now in the UK for $2,300 (which includes VAT). No word on US availability or price, yet.
