Title (AP)
09/11/2004 12:46 PMAP - First, critics said Roger Federer couldn't win the big ones,
because he started his career with a 2-6 record in tournament finals.
Then they said he couldn't handle the demands of Grand Slams, because
he had six first-round losses and just two quarterfinal appearances
over his first 16 majors.

Cygwin: Still Awesome
Cygwin: Still Awesome
09/08/2004 10:51 AMI opined a few months ago on the beauty and joy of the command
line, but I had another experience today that really illustrated the
fact that GUI’s aren’t the best tool for everything.
I have both the privilege and burden of dealing with Rational
Clearcase for some version control tasks. I recently wrote a large
module with a number of new files, and it was time to add it to source
control. Clearcase’s GUI has no ‘recursively add all these
files’ function, which is one of the many ways in which it
strives to suck, and succeeds beyond expectations.
Fortunately, I’ve got Cygwin on my Windows box. First up:
get a list of files to check in. I want only my module, and not any of
the Frontpage crap that Visual Studio adds to web projects. So, I need
a list of all the files in the project, then get rid of any of them
that are not in my module’s folder, then get rid of any
directories that start with an underscore (the frontpage crap), then
save that list to a file.
find . | grep /MyModule | sed /\/_[a-z]/d >
list.txt
(Yes, there are plenty of more efficient ways to write this, but it
was the first way that came to mind, and it works.)
Now I need to take each of those items and check it in to ClearCase
one by one. (Clearcase has an import commandline command that would
take them all at once, but I don’t have permission to run it in
my environment). No sweat with bash.
for file in `cat list.txt`; do cleartool mkelem $file;
done
Awesome. Two commands instead of an hour’s worth of clicking,
saving me so much time that I waste it on things like posting to blogs
while I wait for the checkin to finish.
You need Cygwin if you are a serious power user of any
kind. Learning it will not only make you faster, it will make you more
platform independent. Almost all non-Windows platforms that you run
across use some variation of this syntax.

If I have any criticism of Sensory Impact's
'Subverting Objects of Violence' piece, it's that it's too short. You
can't begin to fill my rage meter with couture ice blade molds
designed to assist in committing the perfect murder, followed up by a
one-off Hello, Kitty Head mecha, and then... it's over. That
sort of teasing frustration makes me so angry it makes me want to
kill. In fact, give me a few hours to let this knife harden and then
I'm coming over to subvert you guys right in the eye.

Epson's World's Lightest Flyer Still
Smallest, Awesome
Epson's World's Lightest Flyer Still
Smallest, Awesome
08/19/2004 07:35 AM
See, I saw that
Epson had released a new model of their "World's Lightest Micro-Flying
Robot" - you know, the one that was a big deal late last year - and
thought, "We've already talked about that. Nobody will be interested."
I was wrong, according to the emails, though, so I guess I better
mention it. The biggest difference between the old model and the new
one is that the update appears to be running untethered, although it
still flies with a bit of a wobble. It's too small to be used outside,
but I wouldn't be surprised to see some implementation of these
available for purchase soon. Although they have serious uses, too -
investigating accident scenes, etc. - with the Bluetooth and built-in
camera, it would make a perfect office toy, until you were fired for
industrial espionage.
Also, could the girl in the video be any less excited?

Nikon D2X & Underwater Housing Reviewed
(Verdict: Awesome)
03/17/2005 03:51 AM
Wetpixel has a review of both
the Nikon D2X 12.4 MP camera and its Subal ND2 underwater housing. The
pictures produced by the camera are vibrant and incredibly
well-balanced, which you would expect for the $5,000 it costs. Still,
reviewer Dr. Alex Mustard says that if you don't need very large
output sizes for your shots, you can purchase a Nikon D70 for
considerably less that produces rather decent underwater shots. The
housing is designed very well and offers excellent ergonomics—an
important consideration when on a dive. Dr. Mustard muses "It costs
$5,000. And if you fill it up with water, it is worth $0," but goes on
to say "in a word, [the D2X] is awesome." Some gorgeous pics accompany
the review, so be sure to check them out. (Thanks, Eric!)
