The situation is made worse when they see young people, who have grown up in a post Apple II era, blitzing a keyboard and using language that is largely unintelligible to non-geeks. AOL to Sell Cheap PCs to Minorities and
Seniors
08/12/2004 02:16 AM
America Online on Thursday said it plans to sell a low-priced PC targeting low-income and minority households who agree to sign up for a year of dialup Internet service. The online unit of Time Warner Inc will begin selling the computer and service at Office Depot this month. The launch is part of a broad strategy at the recovering online service, which watched 2.2 million members abandon its service.

Over the past two years, the company has attempted to find new sources of revenue by appealing to different categories of customers including the Spanish-speaking and teen markets. Executives said it hoped to attract the 27 percent of U.S. households comprised of seniors, African Americans and Hispanics who do not yet own a PC. The computers will come configured with a simple desktop with large icons that send users to specific areas of the AOL service or applications loaded on the computer. They can also be preconfigured for Spanish language speakers.

One IDE to Rule Them All?

One IDE to Rule Them All? 12/30/2004 02:48 AM
Don Box has an interesting set of Predictions for 2005. Every one of them is thought-provoking and well-framed. There is one, though, that I have to push back on: the surface prediction (#2) is that “Sun will embrace Eclipse”. The deeper issue here pops up a sentence later, when Don talks about “unifying on a common tool platform”. Well, as I (and everyone else who attended) learned at the “IDE Shootout” event at the last Java One, the Java IDE landscape is like a messy, vigorous, noisy, public marketplace. Each of the big IDEs is here for the long haul; and it’s not just Eclipse and NetBeans. Don’t forget Emacs, JDeveloper, and the IDE with the most fanatical fans of all, IntelliJ IDEA. Unlike the Windows world, where Visual Studio is all that really matters, what we have here is an ecosystem, a market, a place where competition and evolution happen. There is absolutely zero chance that the Java world will ever “unify on a common tool platform”. Which is A Good Thing.

They Rule
http://www.TheyRule.net

They Rule aims to provide a glimpse of some of the relationships of the US ruling class. It takes as its focus the boards of some of the most powerful U.S. companies, which share many of the same directors. Some individuals sit on 5, 6 or 7 of the top 500 companies. It allows users to browse through these interlocking directories and run searches on the boards and companies. A user can save a map of connections complete with their annotations and email links to these maps to others. They Rule is a starting point for research about these powerful individuals and corporations. This has been added to Reference Resources and Business Intelligence Subject Tracer™ Information Blogs. This will be added to Business Resources 2004 Internet MiniGuide.

Who Should Rule The Internet? 12/17/2003 03:49 AM
The well known libertarian think tank, the Cato Institute is looking at the question of whether or not the UN should gain control over the internet. This was the big question last week at the United Nations World Summit on the Information Society. The fear is that giving control over the UN would end up with rules that went against everything that made the internet successful. Trying to appease every country would mean that none would end up being particularly happy. Not surprisingly, the folks at Cato support leaving the internet as open as possible, and suggest that to solve the "biggest" problem about jurisdiction, you just use the location of origin.

I just posted this at Corante Many2Many: I like Skype. It lets me make phone calls for free to the other 4M people who have signed up for the service. The calls go through my computer and they work real good. But I've just gotten my second random phone call from some well-intentioned stranger who wants to know if I want to chat. Actually, I don't. If you call my Skype number randomly, the odds are just about perfect that you're going to be interrupting something that I'd rather be doing than speaking with a stranger. And here's how you...

Saw Star Wars III. I think that if you spliced episodes I, II and III together, you might get a pretty decent movie. Just take the last half an hour from this one - because no other bit in it deserves saving. The first third of the movie is mostly boring - I yawned at the attempts to create sense-of-wonder (you know guys, there's a thing called "too much").

The middle part of the movie I mostly giggled through, much to the annoyance of my fellow moviegoers, I'm sure.

The final third had a bit of the same feeling as the old saga, and I had nearly a tear in my eye at one point. But still.

Star Wars III is kinda like going to a bad hamburger place: It's crap food, and then you laugh at a poor waiter who drops a tray and makes a mess, but their ice cream leaves a decent aftertaste.

Next time, I'll just have the ice cream, thanks.

Neuroscience of revenge

Neuroscience of revenge 08/31/2004 01:55 PM
David Pescovitz: Researchers at the University of Zurich have shown that revenge is, well, sweet. Their experiment, described in Scientific American, was based on a game where one player was given the opportunity to punish another player for financially screwing him. PET scans revealed that when a player contemplated revenge, his striatum, a "reward center" in the brain, became energized.
This sort of causal relationship may explain why people are willing to discipline a stranger even when there is no immediate gain in it for them. "Emotions play a proactive as well as reactive role," remarks Brian Knutson of Stanford University who penned an accompanying commentary (to a paper about the study in the journal Science). He notes that "passionate" forces may need to be included in economic models because, as this research shows, “people show systematic deviations from rationality."

Reflections on 9-11 and the candidate of
revenge

Reflections on 9-11 and the candidate of
revenge
09/13/2004 02:55 AM
This weblog used to be devoted largely to political essays about the criminal modus operandi of the Bush Administration, and to pointing out under-reported news items, like the Bush Administration's unilateral and unconstitutional suspension of the writ of habeas corpus by creating a new and fictitious legal category, enemy combatant, and detaining U.S. citizens like Jose Padilla. In the 2 years after 9-11, when the media decided that the salvation of the country required pinning wings on the pig who had stolen the election and pretending it could fly, I spent a lot of time writing about the follies and crimes of the Bush Administration. At times I felt like a lone dog baying at the moon. However, in the last year, I've slowly written fewer and fewer political essays, and spent less time pointing at news stories. In part this was because my changed life circumstances left me less time to write, in part it was because I decided to spend some of that energy actually trying to effect change instead of just writing about it, and in part it was because around the first anniversary of the start of Bush's unilateral War on Iraq, some parts of the media woke up to Bush's lies and started reporting again. So, except for incidents like Abu Ghraib, where I got so outraged at the signals from on high that America now condones torture, I have pretty much ceased to write at length about political matters. I assumed that as Bush's lies became more widely known, and the utter cynicism of his exploitation of the national tragedy of 9-11 for political gain became clearer, his support among the American people would drop precipitously. I trust the long-term judgement of the American people -- you can only fool them so long, although when you have most of the media in your pocket it is a lot easier to keep them fooled for longer. But I have been wrong about Bush' support, or at least misjudged how much it would drop. About half the country, plus or minus 5%, still plans on voting for him on November 2. I have racked my brains trying to understand the American people's support for Bush. The 5% up or down can be explained by the media frenzy of the week about Swift boats or National Guard service or similar garbage (while the media continues to ignore...
