Amsterdam to Get City Wide Wi-Fi

Amsterdam to Get City Wide Wi-Fi 08/31/2004 11:25 AM
A company in Amsterdam is planning to deploy 125 base stations to cover all of Amsterdam with Wi-Fi: It's not clear which vendor is supplying the network but the operator is clearly not using off-the-shelf access points. The company is mainly targeting expats, students, and people who share accommodation. Those types of residents may be reluctant to have DSL or cable installed in their location if they don't intend to stay long term. Subscribers will pay just under 15 Euros per month for a 256 Kbps connection. The operator may be smart to target a transient population and offer a low price because it will likely struggle at least initially to ensure that coverage and capacity are adequate....

Spokane Plans Dual-Use City-Wide Wi-Fi
Net
04/23/2004 01:30 PM
Spokane's proposal for a city-side network would have two parallel uses: a protected, private public safety net, and a public side for general use: The network currently exists downtown and response to the Washington town's effort has been positive. The downtown network will ultimately span about 100 city blocks and cost north of $500,000 due to donations from Vivato and other vendors. The city's pitch for funding will play on the improved service for public safety (fire, medical, police). Oddly, the story doesn't mention two frequently cited reasons for switching to Wi-Fi for public safety: redundancy with other coverage for emergencies, and cost savings because most public safety radio equipment uses licensed spectrum and proprietary devices....

This paper describes deployment of WPS technology for a Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) network that allows you to provide pay-per-use, monthly service, and long-term Internet access to new and existing customers through wireless access points deployed in public areas, such as airports and shopping malls. With WPS technology, new and existing customers can connect to your Wi-Fi network without manual configuration of the computer or network connection. This document describes the components of WPS technology, how WPS technology works, and provides deployment scenarios using Windows Server 2003 with SP1. A royalty-free license that covers WPS protocol implementation in servers is available through the Published Protocols and Royalty-Free License site on MSDN at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=33674.

Soft Hyphen Support

Soft Hyphen Support 04/09/2004 04:01 PM

This excellent blog entry showed up in my trackback a while ago. It basically explains how soft hyphens are supposed to work on the Web and points out that Safari always renders soft hyphens even when they don't end up breaking a line.

I thought about just taking the Mozilla route and punting on soft hyphens (i.e., changing KHTML to always hide them), but it turned out to be no harder to just make KHTML work properly with them the way IE6 and Opera do, so I'm pleased to report that KHTML's soft hyphen behavior now matches those browsers.
