Blockbuster To Pay Up For No Late Fee
Fees

Blockbuster To Pay Up For No Late Fee
Fees
03/29/2005 02:05 PM
Following Blockbuster's plan to drop late fees in favor of a longer grace period and then a large lump charge for "buying the movie" if you waited too long to return the film, New Jersey came along and sued Blockbuster for being misleading about its "no late fees" marketing slogan. Apparently, 46 other states jumped on the bandwagon and sued as well. Sensing trouble, it appears that Blockbuster has given in and will pay up a fine, refund fees paid and change their marketing program away from the "no late fees" claim. It still seems like Blockbuster had a valid claim here. A late fee is a "punishment" fee for returning a product late. Blockbuster wasn't punishing customers, but simply assuming that they were buying the video in question. In other words, people were getting something in return for those fees -- not just randomly charged.

I get pissed every-time I walk into Blockbuster they may have the latest movies but their rentals are the highest in town and I always try and support the independents as a result. I can honestly say though that I do not rent $24.99 worth of Video's a month which is what the service is going to cost. You only get 2 Video's at a time you keep them as long as you want but you only get to check-out two movies. Not sure about you folks but we usually rent 3 per weekend. The hassle of having to drive the 4 miles through traffic to get them is not a winner in my book. [DesignTechnica< /a>]

Blockbuster prez calls for end to DVD
region-coding
12/17/2003 11:54 AM
The President of Blockbuster has called for an end to region-coding in DVDs:
"I believe, in addition to the elimination of two-tier pricing, the studios should also make another significant strike against piracy with the elimination of regional coding," he said. "The extra time on windows created by regional coding is an opportunity that pirates exploit."
His reasoning is a little mealy-mouthed. This isn't "pirates exploiting opportunities," it's more like "customers routing around market-failures," as when the product they demand isn't offered for sale, or when they discover that they can buy the same product for half the money in a different part of the world.
