User-Specific DOS Attacks

User-Specific DOS Attacks 01/24/2004 10:36 PM

How Much Security is Needed?: This is a really interesting thought.

If you have a system that locks out a user after too many incorrect logins, then it becomes easy for a malicious user to deny access to your users by simply attempting to log in as them.

You could wreak some havoc with a script that just pelted a site with failed login attempts. You could effectively disable a user — call it a user-specific DOS attack. It would take a log review and some coding or firewall hacking to stop the script, and a lot of sites would have the wherewithal to do it.

Revenge of the User: Lessons from
Creator/User Battles ETCON talk notes
02/11/2004 04:31 PM
Here're my running notes from danah boyd's Re venge of the User: Lessons from Creator/User Battles at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in San Diego.
The response is an attempt to "configure the users" -- constrain behavior to acceptable behavior with messaaging, kicking people off, etc.

This won't work: you can't tell a hacker not to hack. These kids are social hackers. You can stop some bad behavior, but you chase off your best users, too.

Dating doesn't happen because you're in a dating context. Dating arises out of real contexts.

Taking away fakesters didn't make Frienster more real. Friendster is unreal because people never remove their friends, even if they never see them (the exception is when you break up, ironic, because ex-lovers are strong ties!).

Joe Marini Illustrates a new way of building dynamic user interfaces that automatically respond to changes in a data model and update their appearance by using binding relationships between the elements in the UI. This example uses a 100 percent XAML approach to demonstrate these relationships.

There's a standard way of handling object updates via HTML forms. Generally speaking, when the user selects an object to edit, you populate an HTML form with all the data from the object, post all these fields when the user presses Submit, then update all the fields of the record with the data in the HTTP request.

So, if I'm going to edit an article, the HTML form contains all the article properties, and — even if I just change one — the SQL that results after I press Submit rewrites ALL the fields with what it receives in the request.

This has always made me just a little nervous because is assumes that the request is perfectly accurate — that it accurately represents what we want the object to become. But is this always the case?

User Experience MX

User Experience MX 03/13/2003 10:22 AM

The new Macromedia site is simple and clean and I like it, though I'm finding it takes me more steps to find things they used to have on the front page of their site. Granted, the home page used to be cluttered and offered 50 options of where to go.

The most interesting thing I found on the new site was their new commitment to user experience issues as a cornerstone of their business.

While I can picture the marketing team sipping lattes in their "war room" with a huge banner carrying their new slogan "great experiences build great businesses", it's refreshing to hear a major web firm (especially one known for reducing usability in the past *cough* skip intro *cough*) realize the importance of user experience on their bottom line.

Adap tive Path has been preaching this for the past couple years, but it's nice to see a major corporation listening.

User Deletion Bug

User Deletion Bug 11/04/2003 03:44 PM
Users who have bootstrapped or installed Fink 0.5.3 or Fink 0.6.0 on Mac OS X 10.3 could exhibit a problem where all users get deleted from the netinfo database, and you become unable to log in. If you are using Mac OS X 10.3, please be sure you're using the latest Fink version to avoid the issue. To make sure you don't have upgrade problems, check your /sw/etc/apt/sources.list file. You will need to modify it if it contains deb lines that point to "release" or "current" without a version number. In other words, if your sources.list file contains these lines: deb http://us.dl.sourceforge.net/fink/direct_download release main deb http://us.dl.sourceforge.net/fink/direct_download current main ...you should change them to this: deb http://us.dl.sourceforge.net/fink/direct_download 10.3/release main deb http://us.dl.sourceforge.net/fink/direct_download 10.3/current main We are working on updating the repository to make sure that even if you update you don't get the broken code, but in the meantime, make sure your sources.list file has the correct entries.

Wanted: KDE User

If anyone out there has a KDE box handy, I've got something cool for them to test.  Aim me at fuzzygroup or Yahoo me at fuzzygroup or Jabber me at fuzzygroup @ jabber.com.  And if you have experience with IE CSS problems under OS-X, I've got something interesting to ask you about.  (I'd like to get this fixed before publicly posting the new url).  And, note, that the problem show up after we made the home page html xhtml compliant.  Sigh.
