Altec Lansing has a new set
of gaming headphones, the AHS602s, with now-ubiquitous boom mike and
"SRS 3-D Audio," which is not to be mistaken with actual surround
sound but instead more than likely is yet another
slightly-out-of-phase stereo technology (which works well enough, but
I'm just saying). For a hundred bills the 40mm neodymium drivers -
some call them speakers - better sound pretty swell. You can get a
nice pair of closed-ear headphones for half that, then throw in any
random boom bike for $5.

Armstrong writes: Today Altec Lansing announced their bizarrely named
iMmini (no that's not a typo; I checked 8 times) speakers for iPod
mini. It is similar in styling to their InMotion Speakers for iPod,
but about 40% smaller.
"We're delighted that Altec Lansing is bringing out another
breakthrough accessory with the iMmini to provide a great sound system
designed specifically for the incredibly successful iPod mini." said
Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of Hardware Product Marketing.
(The press release doesn't mention what industrial plastics were
insufflated before approving the name.)
The iMmini is priced at $129.95 and will be available "late summer"
at the Apple online store as well as at their brick-and-mortar
stores.

Go old school with your iPod and
blast these super-slick portable speakers around the playground.
Speaker specs are pretty nice: 1-inch tweeters, two 3-inch mid-range
drivers, a 4-inch subwoofer and a 4-inch passive radiator (?) and it
runs on eight D batteries, just like the old timey boomboxes of yore.
Altec Lansing has been putting out some nice product lately, so
there's no reason to think this will be a clunker. Priced at about
$249, seems like a nice way to get portable sound out of your
iPod.

Lansing PL Is Shifting!
04/10/2005 12:47 AMAnother one of my member libraries has been shifting like crazy
lately, but I just recently realized how far. The Lansing Public Library
started with blogs, four of them to be exact, which of
course gives them RSS feeds. (Well, when Blogger is working these
days, it does, but that’s not LPL’s fault.)
Then
Kelli Staley emailed me that they’ve been doing the instant
messaging thing, too. Since October. Aaron, they’re drinking
your Kool-Aid! I especially like that they’re using icons on
their pages to indicate presence (online versus offline), which is
IM’s big strength. Kelli wrote, “Our library is on 2
levels, so we have separate screen names for different age groups.
AskLPLAdult, AskLPLTeen, AskLPLYouth (we're on Yahoo &
AOL).” She went on to note that a few weeks ago, they received
IMs from students in Florida and Ohio. Those two requests are from
students who couldn’t IM their local library. Can your students
IM yours?
But LPL didn’t stop there, as the next message
from Kelli illustrated:
“Lansing Public
Library has partnered with the office of Illinois State Treasurer Judy
Baar Topinka to offer a new service called E-Pay. The E-Pay program
was launched by Topinka’s office in 2000 under a state master
services agreement that is available for all counties and local
governments in Illinois to participate in.
‘We are pleased to help move the library into the 21st
century.’ Assistant Library Director Patricia Higgins
said, ‘Our E-Pay electronic payment service will provide greater
convenience to the community and increase the services offered by the
library.’
The Library’s E-Pay service has started with fee
payment and donations to Friends of Lansing Public Library. E-Pay will
allow you to make your payments over the Internet with cardholders of
MasterCard, American Express and Discover card brands. A transaction,
or user fee, is added to the payment amount for the convenience of the
Internet service. The state and local participants who use this
program do not receive any revenue from the convenience
fee.”
It’s not PayPal, but
it’s a heckuva step in the right direction. Reciprocal borrowers
with outstanding fines and fees are even eligible to use this service
- how cool is that? Keep up the great work, LPL!

they're just capitalizing on that smartphone's success, but either way
the combination headphones/phone headset looks pretty decent, with one

Sony's new Bluetooth headset the DR-BT1 is an odd-looking

Put Down the Phone and Drive (and Take

Put Down the Phone and Drive (and Take
Off the Headset, Too)
07/19/2004 04:44 PMThe Wall Street Journal reports on research showing hands-free cell
phone talking while driving is unsafe at any speed: This is a purely
public service announcement I make today: if you'd like to
dramatically reduce your odds of finding yourself in an accident,
don't talk on a cell phone while driving regardless of whether you're
holding it or using a hands-free system. The cellular industry doesn't
like it, sure, but the growing body of research reviewed in this
article makes it clear that talking on a cell phone while driving has
a significantly different impact on your ability to stay focused on
the road than any other activity, including listening to the radio or
talking to passengers. As the Car Talk guys bumper sticker says (see
upper right), Drive Now, Talk Later! Studies to the contrary turn out
not to be to the contrary, and have had the usual PR spin put on them.
You know why we have anti-bacterial soap all across the U.S.? Because
of a single study done on the cleanliness of street vendors in Mexico.
It all traces back to that. A public-health crisis, producing more and
more resistant strains of bacteria, results from companies choosing to
use limited information to promote a message instead of performing
more science to determine appropriate ways to market their products.
The same is true here: cell companies could promote safer uses of
phones, but their money is in pushing minutes (at the moment). When
cell operators finally switch to unlimited monthly plans, they'll want
people to talk less, just as AOL did when they switched from hourly
billing to unmetered monthly service. When that switch happens, you
can bet we'll see a 100-percent full-court press on restricting
talking at all while driving. As a regular bike commuter, I am often
in a position to see cars clearly perform precision bad driving
maneuvers. About 95 percent of the time, the driver is talking on a
cell phone. When I see someone driving erratically -- bad lane
position, no signal, strange turns, sudden acceleration -- I start
biking even more defensively. When I pass them or them me, I see them
talking on a cell phone. This is anecdotal on my part, and I'm glad
the science backs me up. It also tells me that when I see people
driving poorly and they look like they're not on a cell phone,...

Crappy Headset Business
Crappy Headset Business
08/28/2004 01:03 AM
More bad shopping experiences. Recently, I bought Plantronics
MX10, an phone amplifier that connects to computer for
multimedia works and VOIP,
along with a Telex H-51 headset. Actually, I got the Hello
Direct Virtuoso before
that but returned it in favor of MX10.
When I received it, I realized that MX10 requires headsets with a
special type of
connector called Quick-Disconnect (QD). Note that
Quick-Disconnect headsets
are two to 9 times more expensive than normal computer
headsets.After
a bit of grumbling, I ordered a Symphony headset from
Headsets.com because it
was cheaper than Plantronics headsets of comparable quality.
When I got the Symphony headset, I hooked it all up but couldn't
hear the dial tone.
Hmm. I tested the headset by hooking it up directly to my
phone. There
wasn't any problem with the headset. I tried everything, even
talking to Plantronics'
very nice clueless tech person. Only conclusion I could make
was that MX10 was
defective. So off it went back to Amazon.
Today, the replacement MX10 arrived. I hooked it all up again
but same symtoms.
I switched to a different phone and was rewarded with very distant
dial tone.
Amplifier that weakens signal? I called Headsets.com tech
support this time
and got the disgusting insider news:
Headsets and phone amplifiers from different manufacturers are not
compatible with
each other although they all use Quick-Disconnect connectors.
Huh? That means Plantronics amplifiers like MX10 works only
with Plantronics
headsets and Symphony headsets will work only with Symphony
amplifiers. The
fact that they use same connector form factor is just meaningless.
Totally disgusted, I packed up everything except the Telex H-51 and
scheduled a UPS
pickup tommorrow. Since I ordered a telephony enabled modem
with my new computer,
I am gonna use that instead of fancy but insane phone
equipment. I don't know
why I haven't thought of this before. After all, I have
written a sophisticated
telephony app for a client nearly ten years ago. Maybe I'll
even write a telephony
app that will put these crappy companies out of business.

Wow, from the tenor of their press release you'd
think these guys conquered cancer or caught a fly in some chopsticks
or something, what with their 'revolutionary's and their 'radical's
and their 'breakthrough's; I was all hepped up, but it turns out the
Aliph Jawbone is just a telephone headset, and a wired one at that,
designed to filter out background noise and provide clear voice pickup
even in noisy environments like trading floors. Now if Aliph had a
commercial where this long-haired muscle man cleaves through legions
of Canaanites with a giant-sized version of the headset, only pausing
to look at the camera, covered in gore, as he raises his oversized
Jawbone headset to heaven where, panning up, we see God dialing a
number (maybe eating a hoagie and he has a Jets jersey on), and then
right in the middle of battle Samson gets a call on his Jawbone
headset and God can totally hear him above the din of battle,
well, that'd be the sort of fucking awesome that's going to
sell a $150 headset, people.
