Plus ça change, plus apple plus space 09/11/2004 04:34 PM

This weekend is the one year anniversary of my family's moving to Florence. The dogs and I arrived to the house that Anna had bought, and was waiting in. Neither the hairy beasties nor I had ever been to Florence...

“SpaceShipOne has rocketed into the history books to become the first private manned spacecraft to fly to the edge of space and back. The craft, built by aviation pioneer Burt Rutan, went over space’s 100km (62 mile) boundary, said mission control. It was carried to 50,000ft (15km) by its launcher White Knight at which point it was unleashed. It fired its rockets to continue its trip.” The BBC’s servers are being hit hard at the moment - if you can’t get the story, try again later.

Maryland Game Developer Vision
Videogames Receives NASA Space Act
Agreement To Develop Space Station Game
05/31/2004 01:55 PM
Vision Videogames of Towson, Maryland received a Space Act Agreement from The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) earlier this month to develop their PC/PS2/Xbox game, Space Station:SIM, due for consumer release this Christmas season. The Space Act Agreement is a continuation of one received by GRS Games before Vision Videogames management bought out the company in March 2004. It allows Vision Videogames a flow of information from, and access to, NASA personnel so the company can gather information to build their game. The game has captured everyones imagination. We have individuals and international agencies including JAXA (The Japanese Space Agency) volunteering to help us with drawings, science, music anything you can imagine, says company president Bill Mueller. In Space Station:SIM, the player assumes the roll of the Chief Administrator of NASA, creating astronaut crewmembers with unique needs, abilities and personalities while managing their activities and personal relationships like The SIMS. Change This
http://www.changethis.c om/bloggers.html

Bloggers are special. A jumble of slanted, shouting voices have overcome our airwaves, infiltrated our newspapers, filled every corner of our waking lives, and they aren't going to stop. It's affecting all of us. You may have noticed that every argument seems just a little more heated than the last--is it any surprise, when each one of has been listening just a little bit less? It's a sign of more to come. But now, people are listening to bloggers instead. Blogging is the populist response to the media hegemony: a sea of independent voices. ChangeThis is aiming to disrupt the media pattern with powerful, rational arguments from leading thinkers. We know that we deserve better than what we've got. We know there's a thoughtful, caring, rational human inside every one of us. We're working with the brightest minds we can find. And we believe that bloggers are crucial to changing the tone of our collective dialogue.

A Change in Tactics

A Change in Tactics 12/17/2004 06:37 PM

Over the course of the past month, an interesting trend is beginning to be noticeable. In general, computer attacks methods follow the ups and downs of the latest vulnerabilities being released. This case has become more apparent in the past few years with the time between disclosure of a vulnerability, and the release of proof of concept exploits becoming very short. Even after a vulnerability is released, it takes the general population on the Internet almost 6-8 months to effectively patch against the vulnerabilities.
Whether it is due to better security programming or better mitigation tactics, in the past 6-8 months, we have not seen a vulnerability which gives “Easy” or Worm-like access to computers. This drought in viable vulnerabilities has started a change in the tactics being used by the miscreant community in order to continue to compromise the machines needed to keep the underground economy running.
This change in tactics beings us back to some of the fundamental vulnerabilities for which there are not patches. Generally classified as default or weak passwords, this tactic is best exploited through brute force attacking which is on a sharp raise.
It appears that the systems being sought after most include: Microsoft SQL Database Servers, various UNIX platforms with open SSH services, IMAP mail servers, and other database servers including Oracle.
Database servers are particularly interesting for the miscreants because in addition to giving them access to potentially taking over the computer, it can also potentially provide them with useful information stored in the database which can aide in the theft of identity and other fraud.
Being a paranoid security geek, I would highly recommend that actions be taken to determine what levels of exposure you have on your systems. This is not an exploit method we always think about, but which requires more than just keeping up on critical patches.

Change Is Good - You Go First. Okay, I

You remind me of those people who said they'd never get cell phones.

"I remember when everyone shouted into their cell phones and thought that their batteries drained faster when they made long distance phones. I remember when people (who now have cell phones) swore to me that they'd never have a cell phone. I remember when cell phones looked more like military radios. I think it's fine to gripe about technology, but I would warn those people who swear they'll never use a technology. Technology evolves and so do social norms.

We've been having a dialog recently about the relationship between social norms and technology. I think this is part of the same dialog. New technologies disrupt our habits and our norms and what we feel comfortable with. I am an early adopter type who uses every technology possible and I try to wrap my life around it all. Some people try the technology and point out the tensions. Some people ignore the technology. Technology evolves along with the social norms. When it works well, we end up with a technology that contributes to society in some way and becomes a seamless part of our social norms. When it doesn't work well it either damages society or does not integrate and is discarded." [Joi Ito's Web, emphasis above is mine]

Joi could have been talking about libraries and librarians. Think you'll never use IM for reference? Think ebooks will never go mainstream? Think you'll never need a wireless network at home or work?

Do you have a cellphone?

Agents of Change by Patrick Thibodeau
http://snipurl.com/8xzn

Autonomous agents could one day play a key role in everything from setting market prices to creating more resilient networks. Over the past year, NASA has been uploading software into the Earth Observing-1 satellite, turning it into a testbed for autonomous agents. The agents -- software programs that are able to learn and can function independently -- are used to manage experiments and operate the spacecraft. The effort is part of a technology initiative that researchers say will reshape IT over the course of many years. Autonomous agents have the potential to become an extraordinarily powerful technology, with the capacity to learn, experiment and act independent of human control. Agents could ultimately improve productivity, increase software reliability and change the operation of markets, particularly supply chains.

Ca n you never think of the right thing to say? Tr ouble relating in social circumstances? Maybe Taxi1010 can help. This guide to verbal self-defense is extensive, detailed, and quite clearly the work of a troubled mind. Start here, or search by insult on the "sunporch", key/codeword in the "kitchen", bridge in the "wine cellar", or response in the "nursery." Examine one of the many, many stargates(use this handy map, organized by stage of psychological development)... read one of the many, many essays... wherever you go it is an explosion of advice, comebacks, hypothetical situations, and who knows how many MSPaint masterpieces. Lindows to Change Name

Lindows to Change Name 04/09/2004 04:05 PM

Lindows.com - Michael's Minutes: Name Change: Lindows is changing their name because they're sick of getting sued. This is the right way to go. Far be it for me to defend Redmond, but the name was an obvious attempt to capitalize on Microsoft's market recognition. Besides, if your product is good enough, it should stand on its own. This gives them time and capital to fight other battles.

A new Probe Droid has just been launched; this week we're asking if fans/collectors think it's time for a new company to take over the Star Wars 12" action figure line. Considering the fantastic work companies like Sideshow Collectibles have done on other properties, would you like to see the 12" line find a new home, or do you think Hasbro is doing just fine? Look for the new Probe Droid ballot now and cast your vote today!
